Teochew Puppet & Opera House

Visited back in Jan before the Malaysian MCO.

I so remember watching Teochew Puppets and Chinese opera in general as a child, but never kept it up. So it brought back a lot of good memories to visit this museum and seeing all the costumes and puppets. This museum is very close to the Sun Yat Sen Museum on the same street, so it’s good to combine the two visits while here.

I loved the place and the opera and puppet professional lady that gave us a great tour introducing us to the Chinese art of puppets and opera, the place is very nice, has amazing Chinese music always playing, a cute store with nice items and she even let me dress one of those amazing opera dresses and help me adopt a nice posture for a picture, I really wish her the best with her school and that this art never dies and continue growing for the new generations in Penang and China, super recommended place, if you like traditional art and want to support it, please visit this place.

We got a guided tour into this gallery. She explained everything in details. You can even learned how to hold the puppet. A great learning experience indeed.

Despite its small size, this museum does well performing a worthwhile job of preserving and educating the public about the dying Teochew tradition of puppet theatre. The museum's founders have a long history with puppet theatre (a tale that the guide regaled us with) and one definitely feels that history in the authentic exhibits.

I appreciated the hands-on nature of the exhibits: we got to try our hand at performing with puppets, and there's a dress up booth where we got to try on Chinese opera costumes and learn about their symbolism.

The guide was very hospitable, and spoke in English even though it was not his first language. He gave detailed explanations about the puppets and instruments on display.

All in all it was a highly educational experience. Definitely give it a visit if you are in the area.

The Museum highlights the not so known form of Chinese puppet opera. Puppets and their costumes are on display with explanations. At certain days there are performances. Check the dates before.

Stepping here was a wonderful blessing to learn about puppetry, heritage, beautiful costumes, stories, history and culture. We even got a chance to dress up as queen and official. Staff was so patient to show us the way to hold and move the puppets. Tq tq

Very interesting place to learn about the history and culture of Teochew opera and puppetry. The tours are informative and the price is very reasonable at only RM5.

You will have the chance to hear the opera, if they are training during your visit
