3 beautiful temples, and a large buddha - beautiful view at the top. Didn't see the elephant which I've just seen on other reviews. There was an entrance of 250, but they also had a wrap around to use included as I was wearing shorts so this was helpful. They were keen to share the history but, really for further donations. They were doing some works so hopefully this makes a difference.

This is definitely a must see for everyone in Sri Lanka. I have seen many temples but never one like this one. Especially "Hell" was so interesting. You can climb the Buddha and within see a complete painted story. Entrance is 250 per person.

A sacred temple in down south of sri lanka. There's the significant hige Buddha statue which you can go to the top of the statue and see the enshrined relics. There's a hell tunnel depicts the sinful life after death. There's an old antique clock which has an interesting mechanism too. A must visit place which is always crowded.

Worth a visit to see the murals and sculptures. Very graphic. Rs 250 each. There are some guides around, which I recommend taking to better understand the art work. It is worth it and tipping at the end. We tipped Rs 1000 for the three of us. Ensure your knees and shoulders are covered. Shoes left at entrance. Parts of the temple undergoing renovation.

The Wewurukannala Vihara temple is dominated by an image of a seated Buddha. It is 160ft high, the largest statue in all of Sri Lanka and dates back to the time of King Rajadhi (1782 – 1798).

The temple walls show you the path towards enlightenment by depicting hundreds of comic strip representations of events in the Buddha’s life. Among one of the episodes is the Chulla Dhammapala Jataka. It tells the story of how King Maha Prathapa of Varanasi on entering the palace found the queen cuddling her seven month old child. After ignoring him the King was left insulted so ordered that the prince be executed and the body be thrown into the air. Several Jataka Stories are also amid the paintings, which where selected for Vesak stamps in 1991. One depicts The Kattahari Jataka showing Prince Kastavahana, son of King Brahmadatta resting with his entourage.

This is a must visit destination with enormous religious, cultural and aesthetic value. The statue of Buddha which adds beauty and peace to the surrounding is considered as the tallest seated Buddha statue in Sri Lanka. Its outer coating is finished with small marble tiles, so the statue shines during the day. There are about 7 stories that you can climb to get to the top of statue. From there a truly wonderful view is granted to the viewer.
It is usually not crowded, except for the ceremonial seasons.I highly recommend this place if you want to have a relaxing, spiritual and peaceful time.

Very nice place. We went there because of my mother. This is our first visit to this temple. My mother last visited this temple the day she saw the Buddha statue at Eight Riens. It was only today that it was able to get there after it left. That is 49 years later. It's a very big time. We were able to go because we went on a trip to Tissamaharama. Hell has been built in that temple. Definitely a good temple to visit if you are close by. Buddha Sarana.

Incredible temple, worth going with a knowledgeable driver or guide who can give some context. Entry was 250Rs each. Much more enjoyable experience than some of the temples that are more crowded with tourists.

Beautiful place! If you go the top of the Buddha, there is a fantastic view over Dickwella and the surrounding forests. The adjoining temples is also very beautiful.
Protip: You'll be asked to take of shoes and sandals, if it is sunny outside the ground will be very hot. You can keep socks on though, and not burn you feet as much.

When we were driving to the temple my husband asked me to look at the sky above the trees in front of us.That was the first time i saw this beautiful buddha statue.i was shocked to see the giant buddha statue with a calm face.We eagerly entered to the temple to have a full view of it and search the history of the temple
Wewrukannala buduraja mahaviharaya dates back to 1782-1798.Its oldest building is about 250 years old.
The buddha statue is 160ft high and said to be the largest sitting statue of buddha in srilanka. It is possible to climb up to the top of the statue by the staircase built right behind the statue.it is a 8-10 storied building which has wall paintings in each hall.
What makes it worth the climb of all floors is there is a window which is built behind the head of buddha statue through which we can see whats inside the head.It contains jars made out of clay and some tiny buddha statues.those clay jars contains written sculptures of dhamma which were written on ancient "thal"leaves known as "puskola grantha "
Another part of the temple is an old building with a tunnel which has wall paintings of the hell.and life size statues of demons and sinners.ancient srilankans are said to be afraid to do sins because they were told the stories of different kinds of punishments sinners will receive at hell.
Overall the temple is worth to visit .be mindful of the dress.

Stunning temple in the South of Sri Lanka. Great statue of sitting Lord Buddha and plenty of skillfully made statues and frescoes inside the temple building. In the evening you can sit near the boddhi tree and join the warm Buddha worship with the monks
Just few km away from Dikwella city, easy access, parking resturents available nearby.

This place is very peaceful and clam to mind. But need to be developed toilets and etc since more tourists are also visiting to this place. No water inside the bathroom it’s big ugly and dirty too.
