Stunning, beautiful, a bucket list trip. This is one of the most magnificent places around the world I have visited. Just seeing how vast the city was in the valley along with all the temples and structures throughout. To think that some of them are still standing, is incredible.

Petra is amazing! Must see! Tourist or a local its all beautiful. Lots of rock formations shops and hike up to different vantage points to see the treasury.
Famous part of Petra. Naturally very beautiful and packed with people as well.
Many have seen this via movies, documentaries, or maybe even a video game, but nothing prepares for clearing the final steps of the Siq (the narrow canyon leading to the Treasury) and seeing it in person. Standing in front of it, taking it all in, appreciating that it was carved from the top down, and the long history is so much more meaningful than any other exposure you may have had before arriving. Experience is different than seeing on photos. Do not take the horses as cost of these is a rip off. Golf cars are available for older people or if you like to get to the treasury quickly but walking is recommended. Amazing place to visit and I highly recommend anyone that comes here to visit the treasury as it’s one of the UNESCO world heritage sites.

Amazing historical site. Mid morning and late arvo were the best times to visit - min crowds in Feb. It does get quite chilly in the shade. Bring a jacket with you.

Of course an iconic site to visit.
To avoid crowds, start your tour in the morning and at the back end. This way you will not have too many people. Also, visit Petra By Night. Amazing experience but it’s not every night.

Excellent place to visit we entered from Little Petra with an hour strenuous walk to the Monastery then down past the Queen's palace , amphitheater then on to the Treasury
Then up to the viewpoint of the religious sacrifice. Stay at the wonderful Petra guest house at the entrance to Petra.

Amazing place! The best in Petra for sure. We came here in late morning and it was perfect, not too crowded. Would definitely come back, just amazing! Also worth to climb up and take pictures from the spot from above, where the locals charge a fee ro bring you. Don’t pay more than 5JD per person. Enjoy!

People say you should enter Petra as early as possible to avoid the crowds. I have different opinion. It’s actually extremely crowded in the morning because everyone thinks about the same thing. We purposely chose to visit Petra around 3pm while most tourists are on the way back and pleasantly surprised saw fewer people here. We ended up with some great shots.

Plus, Visiting Petra before it closes also mean your face will not completely dark in the photos because of the backlight in the morning.

We did the back door hike on Feb 20, 2024. We arrived at 7:30am on a Tuesday and got our Jordan pass scanned to retrieve our ticket. Then we went to get a free shuttle van to Little Petra behind the Petra Museum. The shuttle has free WiFi. The driver waited till we had 7 people in the van before leaving. That took about 30 minutes and the free shuttle driver expected tips upon arrival. If you don’t want to wait you could negotiate with a driver outside and get a ride up to Little Petra entrance. We were offered 15 JD for 2 persons but declined. We later regretted it because of the 30 minutes wait to fill up the van. Once we got to Little Petra entrance we bought a 4X4 Jeep ticket for 5 JD per person. If you use a credit card to purchase there is an extra fee. There are also shops and a free restroom. The 4X4 jeep took another 45 minutes to pick us up and to fill up the 20 seats. This wasted so much time. If you didn’t want to wait you could start your hike up to the Monastery. But know the 4X4 will pass you up if you hiked from the ticket booth.

Once we got up to the start of the Monastery hike it was about 9:45am. If it wasn’t for my bad knee we wouldn’t have done this but we hired a donkey. We negotiated and got it down to 25 JD for 2 persons to ride for 30 minutes to the “station”. Originally we were quoted 25 JD for each person. We would 100% do this again. At times it felt unsafe but we made it in one piece and it saved so much walking. The hike up is very steep. Then it was another 30 minutes hike to arrive at the Monastery. Although the kid that guided our donkeys told us it would only be 7 minutes. So from the 4x4 shuttle drop off, it took us an hour to arrive to the Monastery. You can’t get lost.

Once there, you will find shops, food and a rest stop with benches. There are also several areas to hike up for higher views and to enjoy tea with the Beduoins. Just look for the signs. It took us 1.5 hours from the Monastery to arrive to the Treasury without any stops for lunch. You will come across some Beduoins offering mule rides. We bargained down to 4 JD per person to ride for 15 minutes but decided against it. We had to meet our private driver by 1pm so unfortunately we didn’t have enough time to explore the Royal Tombs. We were sad to hear that no Beduoins were taking tourists up to the famous instagram photo spot looking down at the Treasury. When asked why, they said it was not allowed. We did notice there were tourist police at the site. One regret we had was not to get a golf cart for 15 JD each person from the Treasury to the exit. It was a lot of walking in the heat.

Petra is truly beautiful and amazing. We recommend spending more time here if it allows.

How can I rate one of the seven wonders of the world less than five stars? From all the books you read about this place to all the movies that have been filmed here, you will at once not believe your eyes once you see it in real life yet also feel like you’re finally seeing something you’ve always dreamed about. We came in December and the weather was perfect with few tourists crowding around. Someone also got down on one knee and proposed! A truly special place…

If hiking, I recommend taking the back route (moderate 5 miles?) so you can see both treasury and monastery while skipping the uneven 800 steps (you’ll do it downhill instead). If you are quite active, then doing the front to back will be the way to go (hard 10-13miles?). When taking back route, you can pay at Little Petra for a jeep 4x4 to take you to back exit to start the hike. Throughout the hike, there’s little shops that sells water, tea, and coffee. If at any point, you’re too tired, there’s donkeys you can hire to carry you to the next checkpoint. You can also hire camel/ horse to take you back from treasury to main entrance.

If you do not want crowds at all, start at 6/7am. Anything later, it’ll be super loud and chaotic at the treasury. It’s actually so loud from all the tourists and scammers that it’s really hard to appreciate the architecture and surrounding. Tourism police available in front of treasury if you need assistance.

There’s a “best view” viewpoint that you can haggle (at least 50-80% lower) to get to the top for pictures. You’d have to climb a small hill near the treasury, nothing too bad.

Well apart from Indiana Jones The Petra Treasury, also known as Al-Khazneh, is carved into the rose-red rock face in the ancient city of Petra. It was constructed in the 1st century AD by the Nabataeans and is believed to have served as a royal tomb or a treasury for the city. It changes from sunset to sunrise so two viewings are worth the effort

It was my dream to visit Petra and I am still mesmerized by it. It's one of the seven wonders of the world. Walking through the canyon is an experience in itself, those huge rocks narrow passage. Wow!! The moment the Treasury reveals itself to you is a memory you will treasure for the rest of your life.

Arrive as early as possible to avoid the sun and crowd and to enjoy the Treasury view peaceful. It opens @6 AM and we were there @5:30 AM and it's totally worthy it. We walked to and fro till the The Monastery as well. While returning it was completely crowded.

If you are visiting only the Treasury and Royal tombs 3 to 4 hours are enough. But if you wanna go to the Monastery and back and visiting all other places with lunch breaks, small breaks it took us 9 hours on foot and trust me it's totally worth it.

Tips:

1: Arrive early
2: Wear comfortable clothes and shoes
3: list down all the places you want to visit
4: watch or know about the Petra before the visit
5: Carry water bottles and snacks

Wow. Amazing World Heritage. Magnificat.
Almost 2+ kilometer walk from the enterance. Battery car available cost JOD25 two ways. Worth using it Atleast 1 way at JOD15.

There is a Candle lit show by night. Risky to walk 2 ways 4+kilo meter in dark. Many visitors slip due to stone foot path. Frankly not that worth to visits. This is my views.

Overall Amazing place. Petra is simple walk, walk, walk …..

The treasury was part of the Petra experience. Unfortunately, you are not allowed to enter but still a beautiful sight. Be sure to take pictures from the top....but you'll have to pay the 'guides' to take you up...still worth it.

About Petra
Historical place in Jordan

Petra, originally known to its inhabitants as Raqmu or Raqēmō, is a historic and archaeological city in southern Jordan. Famous for its rock-cut architecture and water conduit system, Petra is also called the "Rose City" because of the colour of the sandstone from which it is carved; it was famously called "a rose-red city half as old as time" in a poem of 1845 by John Burgon. source
