The lake is surrounded by snowy peaks at the north, Tiffin point at the south-west and Naini peak (after which the town and the lake are named) at the North-west.

It is believed that the Naini Lake is one of the 51 Shakti Peeths, based on the story of the death of the goddess Sati. Out of grief and sorrow, Shiva carried Sati's body, reminiscing about their moments as a couple, and roamed around the universe with it. Vishnu had cut her body into 52 body parts, using his Sudarshana Chakra, which fell on Earth to become sacred sites where all the people can pay homage to the Goddess. The spot where Sati's right eye (or Nain) fell, came to be called Nain-tal or lake of the eye. The goddess Shakti is worshiped at the Naina Devi Temple, known by locals as Naini Mata Temple on the north shore of the present day lake.

The lake so beautiful.. Words fail to describe its beauty. the scenic view is so peaceful to the eyes. Nainital city is present around the lake. The view of the city with the lake is mesmerizing. Enjoy the boat ride in the lake. You can either take the pedal boat to have your own privacy or you can hire a boatman to take you through the lake in a normal boat. Though the price is on a higher side but its worth it. Alternatively adventure enthusiasts can also go for rowing in the lake. The naina devi temple is present at one end of the lake that can either be accessed through the lake or through the busy mall road. I hope you enjoy the picturesque location as much as I did.
