I truly felt like I was in paradise! Completely off the grid, full of nature and a very authentic Khasi village! Veronica is a wonderful person who made us feel at home!

This place is for nature lovers and people who don’t mind walking up and down the hills. The stay is very basic but you have everything you need + yummy homey food cooked by Veronica! Very special experience!

I absolutely loved staying here with Veronica and her family. I came for one night but could not bear to leave so stayed another! It's an easy 40 min walk from nongriat but it feels a world away as there are no other tourists. It's a tiny hamlet set deep in the jungle, far from the road. It's so calm and peaceful here. I loved sitting on the verandah, with a view of trees and flowers and the sound of birdsong. Veronica is the kindest, warmest host - I felt so welcome. She made lovely food on the fire. Staying here was a wonderful experience which I'll always remember - thank you Veronica

It was amazing! We stayed 4 nights but we could live there. At the moment they only have 2 beds. We stayed at Veronica’s house she was so sweet and cooked delicious food. If you want to have a local experience, in the most beautiful nature then you have to visit this amazing place. The place is 1,5hour hike from the closest road in Tyrna. It’s though and it’s going all the time downhill and uphill but it’s so worth it to live in the middle of the jungle. There is also a living root bridge 30min from the village without anyone else. The double decker living root bridge is a 40min walk.

Staying with Veronica was the highlight of my holiday. It was a wonderful experience to stay in an authentic Khasi tribal village totally off grid. Veronica made me feel very welcome, looked after me really well, and can speak some English. At the time of writing this review Veronica has just one room attached to her house. Athough the room is basic it has a lovely view of the jungle from it's veranda, a mosquito net and electric plug in so you can charge appliances at night. Overall it was an amazing experience for me (as an English person) to come and live with the Khasi for a few days (miles from any other tourist or even a road) and learn about their way of life as well as doing some great treks. You can trek to the root bridges, Blue Lagoon and rainbow falls from here. It is 40 mins walk away from the main tourist village of Nogarait.
(Ps, the bamboo cottages mentioned in earlier reviews were very sadly damaged in the monsoon, although Veronica plans to reopen them in the future.)

Veronica is a wonderful and warm host who made me delicious khasi food, welcomed me in her home and treated me to local fruits and tea. The homestay is non-luxurious and not made up to be any different for tourists. It is very local and I’m glad I stayed with the Self Help Group Homestay.

Amazing experience with Veronica, the manager, and the Self Help Group(SHG), a nice projet ride by 7 women of the village. The food, the nature, the locals...just awesome. You feel like at home. I will come back.

Nice and calm stay in a tiny village half an hour away from Nongriat. There are two wooden cabins with each two beds with mosquito nets available. Place has two toilets and a cold bucket shower. Prices are more than resaonable.
It's perfect for people who love nature, but don't need luxury! There's also a direct path from Tyrna leading to Mynteng, so no need to walk the longer way passing Nongriat.
Veronica who is managing the place for the SHG was lovely and told us a lot about the place and her culture. She and her sister prepared very good breakfast and dinner for us, even we got to taste a dish with banana flower. During the daytime we could get Maggie at Veronica's Home. We stayed two nights, but would have liked to stay a few days more!

The place is secluded and surrounded by Forest. The cheapest place I found in the area. If u want a more relaxed place away from the crowd this is a better choice. Everything is basic tho. But the food is nice and cheap as well.

The village is 30 minutes Hike from Nongriat. U can ask for Veronica (the one who manage the homestay) when u arrive in Mynteng. There's a natural swimming pool 5 - 10 minutes up. And another one down for 30 minutes. Also there are root bridges there. Just ask Veronica about it.

Great place with lovely hosts.
Really enjoyed the peacefulness and hospitality.
The Homestay is run by a women's cooperative to provide an independent source of income for them.

You can reach it easily from the street approaching from Tyrna village. (There is a sign for the homestay). It's a 1hour walk via well maintained stairs. Alternatively, it can be reached in 30 min from Nongriat. (The path starts behind the church in Nongriat)

Affordable food is also available. So take a few days off & enjoy this place in the middle of the jungle.

There is not a single fault I have for this place. This bungalow is located in the village of Mynteng, 45 minutes away from Nongriat. Even if there is no space in the homestay, Veronica (the owner) is always accomodating and will welcome you into her own home if need be. The double rooms are 200 rupees per head and are clean and spacious.

Veronica (and her sister) make absolutely delicious, all vegetarian food in large portions - breakfast and lunch costing 50 and dinner for 100 rupees.

The homestay is a quick walk to various natural swimming pools, a waterfall and two small root bridges. Such a wonderful experience - spent 4 nights here but easily could've spent 4 weeks. A much more pleasant base than Nongriat if you want more peace and quiet.

Wish I could give more than 5 stars. Veronica and 6 other women help run the homestay as a self-help group. It's actually a tiny wooden cabin with two two-bedded rooms, buried in the green forest. The 17 homes of the villagers are scattered around. You will interact the most with Veronica and her sister Brilliant, as they are the ones who can manage some English.
Mynteng is a tiny hamlet and can be reached by its own steep downhill path a few yards before you reach the Tyrna parking lot, where the much more popular Nongriat hike begins. Look out for a small sign on your left, where you will find the stairway leading down. The first small stretch is concrete stairs, but very soon the path changes to old-fashioned steps cut into the hillside. After reaching the bottom, you will have to cross a crazy, long, narrow, creaky, swaying suspension bridge made of bamboo and rusty wires twisted together, spanning a yawning chasm with white water gushing beneath. Maybe I exaggerate, but that's how it seemed to me at the time. If, like me, you have a fear of heights, this is the part where you look straight ahead and mechanically put one foot in front of the other. In the middle, set your teeth, grip the handrails firmly, and take a look around for a spectacular view. The sick lurch in the pit of the stomach is worth it.
After crossing the river, you will find a concrete stairway leading up to the village of Mynteng. Everything is immaculately clean and quite primitive. The villagers make their living cultivating areca nut, betel leaf, bamboo and some fruits. Try the local lemon - it makes for a wonderfully refreshing lemon juice. The local honey is magical, redolent with the scent of the forests.
Veronica is one of the sweetest people you will ever come across, and a very good cook. She will tell you how to reach more living root bridges and natural swimming pools, which you are likely to have all to yourself, as very few people come here. If you want to meet fellow travellers and see the double decker bridge, Nongriat can be reached by a forty-minute walk through the forest.
As I said before, it is a very basic way of life, in perfect harmony with nature. The rates are very affordable. Don't expect any luxury, but open yourself to blissful comfort. Respect the locals and their ways- the Khasis here are a quiet, cultured people, with big hearts.
I know Veronica will most likely never see this review, but I thank her for her warmth. I hope I will have a chance to visit again and stay a while longer.

Nice little guest house in a quiet village. Food is good, everybody is really nice, and it's the cheapest one. On your way from Tyrna to the start of the trail to Nongriat, there is a trail that goes directly to Mynteng village. The other option is to walk to Nongriat and then head across to Mynteng from there. If you're tired of staying in moldy concrete cells, you should come over here. The power has been out in the village for six months but someday it will be hooked back up.
