St John-at-Hampstead Church

Very nice church in Hampstead, went there to visit the grave of Harrison, the watch maker but it was covered due to building works.

Beautiful architecture, great community spirit, very inviting atmosphere. The churchyard is so peaceful, and there is a number of noteworthy names buried there, so it is oozing with a beautiful blend of nature and history. It always helps to lift my spirits.

A lovely community, friendly, warm, welcoming, and eclectic (perhaps even a bit eccentric). It has a wonderful churchyard, a delight to roam in, especially in the evening or when the sunlight dapples through the trees. Tombs include those of "Peter Pan" (or at least the boy and his brothers who inspired the story), and a series of political, artistic, theatrical, and scientific luminaries, all buried amongst the yew trees, chestnut trees, brambles and flowers. Think painter Constable, chronometer inventor Harrison, feminist Eva Gore-Booth and many others. The church is a simple 1740's building on a spot where there has been a church for 1000 years. It has a spectacular interior, and a bust of poet John Keats. One of the defining features is a fantastic church choir and music program, truly world class, singing a range of music, including the beautiful English polyphony, as well as a great and well-led junior choir. The music at Passiontide is especially moving, and they organize a great "Come and Sing" Requiem for Remembrance weekend.

I visited the church for Christmas Day morning mass, the lady priest who led the mass was so inspiring, me and my family felt a true spirit of Christmas. Thank you.

A beautiful church. I visited the tomb of John Harrision which was justifiably grand and impressive. The resting place of the clockmaker who changed navigation for the world.

A beautiful church. Harrison and Constable are buried in its grounds. The cementary annex opposite is also worth visiting it has Commonwealth War Graves. The external war memorial is also well kept.

The crypt is used by various interest groups who meet regularly; for example, the Hampstead Photographic Society which meets Tuesdays at 19:45 and is open to new members. Its membership is a mix of amateur and professional photographers. The schedule for the year is outlined in its published program - where you can see what incredible value it is for anyone with an interest in photography, and you don't need a camera for these stimulating meetings. As a member of the Photographic Society I wish to thank the Church for its generous support of our group.

This is a terrific spot. The church interior is stunning, but it is the surrounding churchyard that is worth exploring. Firstly, it is a true wild and overgrown churchyard with earth paths meandering between tombstones that lean at all sorts of bizarre angles.
The artist John Constable and John Harrison of Longitude fame are both buried in the old churchyard. Across the road is the "new extension" where the Llewellyn Davies brothers are buried (the boys whom J. M Barrie used in Peter Pan). It is a haunting and lovely spot and well worth whiling a way a few hours just losing yourself in.

My very special church with a wonderful graveyard. Lots of beautiful houses surrounded by trees. The feel of the village church in London.

Lovely old church on Heath St, Hampstead, with friendly, kind and caring vicar. Get away from the hussle and bussle and pop in for a bit of peace and tranquility. The perfect place to talk to our lord, if you need a shoulder to cry on, or an ear to listen to you, or to give thanks. He's always there for you. Remember the story of the man walking along the beach? He asked God "Why are there only one set of footsteps in the sand, when I need you beside me Lord?" The Lord replied " Because I am carrying you my son." So lovely. So comforting.

Interesting church, worth a look if you're in the area. Graveyard includes the graves of John Harrison and John Constable which are signposted.

Beautiful Church. And the well preserved graveyard is worth a visit. But don't go there at night.
