Hotel Los Héroes

We chose Los Heroes as our first night of stay in La Fortuna based on recommendation from a friend who had stayed there. It turned out to be everything we expected and more. We got there late during the evening, and the host Silena provided detailed check-in instructions and keys to our room. After we woke up in the morning, we came outside our room in the middle of a hill, and we found we were surrounded by a beautiful farm, with Swiss style chalets dotting the green hills, and cows enjoying their daybreak grazing. Beyond the farm, you could see Lake Arenal and the Monteverde cloud forests in their full glory. We took a walk around the farm and found a private railway running through the property. It turned out that Silena’s late husband was an architect, and settled here from Switzerland several decades ago. He designed and built the farm and hotel with his own hands. He later built a restaurant on top of the hill in their large property, and even built a train station private railway to connect the farm and the restaurant. The couple was such a hero in eco farming and tourism that they hosted President Jimmy Carter and his wife in 2000. They are truly worthy of the Los Heroes hotel name!

Neat place to stop after a long day of hiking. Only had a small plate and a drink but really enjoyed it.

Some people might call this a bit crazy the Swiss style and the train, but it is the place that Costa Rican couples want to get married.
