One of those places you pass by your whole life without ever stopping at. So I finally did !
A beautiful property preserved to capture a fascinating family. Both Hans and his daughter have galleries on display. The tour covers the studio on the hill and also the family home. Guides are very friendly and knowledgeable.
I recommend buying tickets on their website which includes the option for a gorgeous afternoon tea with scones afterwards.
Take the time stop for a visit next time you visit Hahndorf.
Well worth the effort!

A great place to visit if you want to learn more about one of Australia's most notable artists. Our lovely tour guides were very sweet and made the tour so enjoyable and knowledgeable. There's also a nice little Cafe off to the side which was really nice.

Hans Haysen - The Cedars has a very historic background for South Australian art culture particularly.
I strongly recommend 60 minutes guided tour ($22 Adult entry ticket) if you are interested and have time. This guided tour gives you access to studio and house internal visits with special access to art collections.

You can still visit the garden around the house ($5 entry) or do a self guided tours ($17) with access to some additional facilities.

Local cafe at this domain is also nice to spent time with natural environment around for such a mindfulness experience.

We had a wonderful time exploring and learning about the talented artist, Hans Heysen and his daughter, Nora. Our tour guide brought it all to life, with intimate stories about the family. It is truly a South Australian treasure which is well worth a visit.

Thoroughly enjoyed the guided tour through Heysen's studio and the family home. We had a bite to eat at the Cafe beforehand, and the quality and presentation of food was impressive. Will definitely be back to showcase this little gem to our overseas or interstate visitors!

Book both the guided tour and Devonshire Tea ahead of the visit! You receive a warm welcome, great tour guide, and you know you are experiencing wonderfully preserved, living Australian history....where that history was made ..... and lived. Fabulous!

Our visit to the Cedars was the highlight of our South Australian visit. Beautiful house and gardens, incredible art and history and delightful tearoom. Our guide was enthusiastic and personable and she made the history of the home really come to life.

WHAT A GORGEOUS EXPERIENCE! Honestly, this was an experience, not just a place to visit. We did NOT go into the home, but we paid the $5/person to walk the acres and acres of grounds. The "artist's walk" is definitely worth it, if you love nature, wide open spaces and sunshine! We then had coffees and scones with jam and cream at the Cafe. The CUTEST, most serene Cafe in the Hills, for sure! Emily the manager is just delightful. The atmosphere feels clean and inviting. Best scones I've had in Adelaide so far! We will definitely be back, even if just for the Cafe.

I knew nothing of Hans Heysen except I knew I loved his paintings. The knowledge imparted by the guide, Celeste, was comprehensive and filled in all the gaps in my knowledge. The garden, in mid winter was beautiful, and the tea room was perfect. Tea on a china cup and saucer that matched topped off a wonderful morning. I will return.

So good to have history and talent like this in our backyard. Shame the new owners are looking to cash in and disrupt the existing grounds to make way for more tourism.

Loved seeing his beautuful large studio & all the art materials there. The artists walk was a pleasure too & reading his words on how his surroundings inspired him.

Fabulous place to visit. Make sure you book ahead for a house and studio tour. There is only a small cost. Jackie was a great guide. Our visit to The Cedars was a highlight of a trip to Hahndorf. You can see how this lovely environment inspired the great Hans and Nora Heysen.

This wonderful hidden gem just behind Hahndorf is amazing. Step back in time.
Tour guides tell the history of the home and art studio of the Heysen family.
The artwork is truly delightful.
Recommend to young and old with a Tour then time to spend on the property so take a picnic. Take paper and pencil. Or the take photos to draw later.
Suggest 2 hours for tour then enjoy grounds at leisure.

The guided tour provides access to the house which is very evocative of the life they led at the property. The visit provides a step back in time to Heyson' life- his studio, the garden, the little caravan and the paintings of our landscapes that are so familiar. Well worth the visit.
