Thru the Gate Cafe

We stopped here for a break after walking the Ballarat-Skipton rail trail from Haddon.

Exceptional service, good strong coffee and delicious freshly baked scones with homemade rhubarb jam and fresh whipped cream.

What’s not to like?

OMG I loved this little gem. Vanilla slice was excellent, great coffee & tea.
We will be back before we leave.

Just had a Devonshire tea with iced coffee. The scones were light and moist and the jam tasted home made. The service was wonderful; the owner was very kind and friendly. Also took home two of their beautiful home made slices. A thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Absolutely love this little cafe! Stop in every week to get a coffee on the way to netball training and always buy more. Support lots of local peoples businesses. Staff are always friendly. Couldn't speak higher of this cafe and it's staff.

finally got to have lunch there today with my husband and son and we enjoyed it very much. my son loved his home made sausage roll with home made tomato relish and salad whilst my husband and i had the toastie with ham cheese and tomato. a relaxed atmosphere with country charm

For less than $40 we got three delicious toasties, a slice of cake and two hot drinks. The menu at Thru The Gate takes a unique spin on old favourites using local produce; such as the brie, pear and local bacon toasty. The drinks are interesting too, like the Sicilian orange hot chocolate. The high ceiling building is charming and full of light. If you're passing through Smythesdale and want a delightful lunch, check out Thru The Gate Cafe. Don't blink though, or you'll miss it.

Stumbled on this gem on our way across Victoria. Great service, you could tell the waitstaff enjoyed their job. Food was great. If I go through the area again we'll definitely stop!

Have stopped in previously to get take away, but first time sitting in. Love the atmosphere of the old building, the staff were lovely, food was delicious. Cute decor and a little community library.

Such a little hidden gem. A very cute fit out with friendly staff and delicious foods. Enjoyed the vegan Chai and they had vegan sour cream too!

Awesome, cute and bright cafe. We stopped by on a Sunday and loved our Brazilian pulled beef pie, Devonshire tea (raspberry jam), nice coffee and a very nice chai (Prana).

Very friendly and warm with good coffee and great quality scones and cakes. Nice open fireplace and interesting interior. I especially liked the artworks on display and the rhubarb in the jam.

Travelling through. Amazing coffee and probably the best scones I’ve ever had!!! Loved the decor, small gift store, bought a cute wooden spoon and teaspoon set.

Had lunch here last Wednesday; the dining room was clean and tidy, the old building giving the right atmosphere for me to enjoy my pie, salad and excellent coffee within its cool walls on a moderately warm day.

Was recommended this cafe by a local B&B owner. When we arrived (without a booking) the cafe was completely slammed, but the staff were honest about their capacity and we chose to wait even though they were busy. Waiting was not a chore with the cosy fire going, and when our food arrived it was delicious. The staff were incredibly gracious even under pressure. We also loved that we could purchase the delicious condiments we had tried with our meals. This cafe is a real gem, definitely worth a visit.

Reasonably priced excellent tasting cuisine served by friendly staff within a great atmosphere with great coffee.

the coffee can be a bit shaky when they're busy but othewise it's good. The food is excellent; particularly the baking. They do a good job with the pies/pasties, including a couple of interesting flavours. The light in the front room(s) is pleasing, but I usually sit outside in the shade

Outstanding. Atmosphere was wonderful, log fire going, excellent food choices, very special, tea in China cups. So lovely.
