Picture Perfect Framing & Restoration

They seemed really nice and professional when I dropped off some art works, certificates and a photograph to be framed. The background is that we had received a photograph by an international artist as a gift, which fell off its hook on a wall and was completely damaged by the broken glass of its frame. We went through hell and high water contacting the artist who was kind enough to issue is with another print on hearing our story. On dropping it off at this framers, I was concerned as it has been rolled loosely for a while, so went back about 30mins after delivering it and relayed my concerns. I was told the photo had already been unrolled and it was fine, followed by a lengthy discussion regarding how because it was rolled image out it wouldn't crack, how photos don't crack and you really only have to worry about paintings rolled with the image on the inside. Upon picking it up, there was an obvious crack in the photo. Surprised that nothing was mentioned to me neither after unrolling the photo nor on picking up the framed piece, I called them to ask what had happened. I spoke to Daria who was incredibly defensive and was obviously having trouble recalling out conversation when I dropped it off. She said she unrolled it in front of me (untrue) and that it was a crease that was already there (if so, why didn't she say anything when I came back?). She also said we unrolled and rolled the photo many times and kept trying to blame my partner and I for what had happened, despite me telling her repeatedly we had not unrolled it since receiving it from the artist. The whole experience was heartbreaking as we had gone through so much trying to get another copy of a piece with incredible sentimental value. It was because of the good reviews here that I selected this business and didn't take it to Melbourne. I can only surmise that either it had been damaged while we had it and I was not told despite asking, or it was damaged in framing. Either way I found this unprofessional and upsetting, and wanted to warn a others. They told me of have to contact the artist again and get another copy (this is a gallery piece! People don't reproduce them and we were lucky to be able to do it once!). Then I was given a name of a photo restorer and told that they would be happy to handle it, but I didn't trust the picture in their hands any more. I went to the restorer and it was actually the local camera house - not exactly a great solution for fine art photography reproduction. The icing on the cake was asking to pick up the roll that my postgrad degree came it for sentimental reasons, and to be told it had been "chucked". Don't take anything you really care about here.
