Great Japanese restaurant serves was spot on,
the food was so good almost forgot to take a picture, children friendly. Really really nice place… coming back for lunch

We dined at Kambei last night and had an amazing time! The food was exceptional, the wine was lovely and the service was also fantastic. The lady who looked after our table was very informative and explained the dishes we were served from the $65 menu. The Unagi Eel was my favourite dish by far, the flavours were just incredible and the Eel was very delicate and soft. Thank you Yutaka for our dinner last night, we will certainly be back! - Jess J

Liked it so much earlier in the month that we decided to take family there for lunch today... including 2 boys 12 and 13. They loved it. All meals were amazing, beautifully presented by very friendly staff and chef.
And a little surprise before we left. 💗
Will definitely return.

Best authentic Japanese food in Ballarat and potentially in Victoria

This is my favourite Japanese restaurant in Australia so far. Very fresh sashimi and well cooked chicken at a reasonable price.

Having travelled to Japan a few times, the lunch set I just devoured at Kambei is one of, if not the BEST and most authentic Japanese dishes I’ve eaten. The edamame was fresh with mild seasoning, the salad perfectly dressed, the rice perfectly cooked and the sauce on the teriyaki chicken transported me back to Kyoto - unreal!

Great authentic Japanese restaurant in Ballarat. I love that they have traditional style meals on the menu. It's pretty hard to find this kind of Japanese menu in Australia, let alone a regional town in Australia! Staff were excellent and very respectful. Food was fresh and very well presented. Highly recommend visiting if you're in the area. Prices may seem high to some but really for the amount of seafood given and the amount of food you get it is very reasonably priced. Much better value if you get one of the set menus.

Wow...that was amazing & unexpected for Ballarat. Seriously good Japanese. Owner & chef is from Japan. Passionate, generous & talented. We even shared a few wines at the end of the night.

Our waitress was Russian which added to the unique experience as she also was very knowledgeable of the menu and clearly loved the cuisine. Have saved this to our fav list and will be back for sure.

If passing through Ballarat or doing the Sovereign Hill thing put this on your list as it's great for couples and also family friendly. They have a good fine dining balance.

Incredible service. Beautifully presented, delicate dishes that let the ingredients sing. Authentic Japanese. Sashimi platter very fresh

First time dining here. The food was absolutely delicious, and the service was incredibly friendly and polite. While the menu seems small upon first glance, it's very clear that they have chosen to specialize in a few dishes rather than offer many average dishes.

The restaurant decor is rather minimalist, but perfectly tranquil. Absolutely wonderful place to dine, and you are actually able to converse with people at your table, as there is no loud blaring music.

Will definitely be back to dine there again.

The food was excellent despite having just been in Tokyo the week before. The sashimi and toothfish were amazing - highly recommend!

Wow, from the moment you walk in until the moment you leave, it's like you've entered japan. You get this authentic feel that is created by the decor, the staff and the music. Then you are presented with an epic menu, after ordering the food begins to present itself, it was unbelievable. Such an amazing meal, everything is so fresh and such high quality. It's like I was tasting all of Japan with each bite. The warm sake complemented my meal like peanut butter complements jam (jelly). It was a delightful experience in an unexpected place. I felt like I was taken back to Japan.

What a gem. Delicious authentic Japanese. Delightful surprise, as we simply chanced upon this place. Black cod was melt in your mouth soft, miso eggplant superb, tempura spot on. Not pictured, chawanmushi and assorted sashimi just perfect.

What a find in the backstreets of Ballarat. We drove past on a Wednesday evening and called in on the spur of the moment. Glad we did. Friendly staff, great Japanese menu supported by really enjoyable fresh Japanese food. I had forgotten how much I loved endamine, not to mention sashimi and miso soup. I can certainly recommend the Kambei Course.

One of the best Japanese restaurants in the City. I highly recommend Kambei for family & Friends. The owner & chef both are very friendly.

The food is very good. Almost as good as the best in Melbourne. Nothing flash about the atmosphere or service. But both are competent, and the service was friendly. The lunch menu is more limited than the dinner menu. But is still very good.

Couldn't recommend this place anymore! Both the food and service were amazing. 100% going back!

Had dinner at Kambei tonight. Was pleasantly surprised when walking there to find this stunning little restaurant. The food was amazing. One of the best Japanese restaurants we have dined at outside Japan. Food presented impeccably. Fresh and perfect portion sizes. Could not fault the entire experience. Thank you.

Came here for my birthday dinner, have never been before. It was absolutely amazing, especially for Ballarat . Stunning atmosphere, unbelievably tasty food, and attentive wait staff -what more could you want?
