HUGO Asian resturant

Food was always beautiful. Always. Have tried several dishes, and all was incredibly DELICIOUS! I always wonder why this place doesn’t get a lot of exposure since the food was just sooo good, they really bring chinese food to a whole new level. My favorite place for chinese, really. It’s just that, the service is really lacking, and even though there’s only one FOH staff, they could really upped their level of service, efficiency, and cleanliness. Tables were often being left dirty for a long time before being cleaned, even though the restaurant was not crowded at all.

We came down from Mt. Wellington late, feeling so cold and windy. So we decided to have some hot and savoury meal as dinner. Found this restaurant when we’re heading to Hobart city, the best thing is they closed late at 11pm. Surprisingly, all three dishes that we picked randomly tasted so yum. It’s totally above average as compared to Melbourne City Chinese restaurants. The portions considered quite big comparing to the price they charged.

Nice restaurant with friendly staff and good service.
We were not familiar with the food so we asked a lot of questions and the staff were good to explain explain them.
We ordered the Kung Pao chicken, Fried eggplant, the 3-vegetables stirfry dish and rice.
Dishes served within 10mins of ordering.
Food was delicious. Would recommend this restaurant to those who enjoy Sichuan food.

Friendly and helpful staff and taste good. It is very conveniently located near Coles Sandy Bay open until late night!

Reasonable price for delicious Chinese cuisine. Can definitely come back soon for adventure other menus I haven't tried yet!

For the people below who said it's bad service, be glad. In China it's much worse.

Now to the food:
The slow cooked beef noodle is authentic. The taste of the broth is exactly what you find in Lanzhou China. Not the "normal" broth filled with MSG on your usual "Chinese restaurant" in the shopping mall.

The salt and pepper prawns were massively massive. Taste was very good.

Cashew chicken was nice.

Dumplings came out nice and hot and with vinegar or soy sauce (if that's for you)

The food is the correct northern taste. Sure, it's not to everyone's taste. In the north, there is abundant use of vinegar.

The other dishes are exactly what you find in China. The taste isn't too strong. The taste is authentic. This is the main reason I give it the full five stars. Difficult to find a authentic tasting restaurant in Hobart. We believed we found it. Well done.

So before you keyboard warriors give harsh criticism with one star, keep this in mind. If sour isn't your thing, don't eat here. simple enough.

Hope this helps with the usual people who just order the fried rice or honey chicken etc. Take the leap of faith and be adventurous.

My wife and myself ate at Hugo tonight and everything was delicious. She had a wonton soup with delightfully flavoured chicken broth as the base, one of the best she has tasted. I had an entree of Beef slices with chilli oil flavouring, spiciness just right. Mains the Chicken & Cashews which was the best I have ever had , highly recommendable restaurant , great friendly and prompt service, a shame they are not licensed for byo or wine sales.

We had a pretty big group tonight and the waitress was amazing - they were short staffed but did a great job. Food was great - especially the bbq fish.

Best asian food we have had. We came to Hobart for a few weeks and had food at Hugo every night that's how good it is.

I believe there is new management as it is now open 7 days a week. Beautiful regional Chinese food. We will definitely be back.

I think this could be our new favourite Asian restaurant. The Shangdong Chicken is one of the best dishes I have ever eaten.
