The 7-Eleven I visit on Congress Ave in Portland is a good store as far as offerings go and most of the personnel are very good at what they do under difficult circumstances due to location and the intricacies of many of the customers that frequent this store it's a job I wouldn't want to do because it's not just clerical or cashier it's total customer service with authority which is needed to keep things in order to be friendly yet gain the respect of the customers that they must follow the rules or leave immediately. This is accomplished by your staff most of the time

Hands down the BEST 7/11 I have ever been to, out of 4-5 states I've visited. The people that own and operate this store have the biggest hearts you'll ever be lucky enough to see. That's how much of a regular I am there.

Army Yak:

"What are you doing?"

"I'm just drinking my coffee and ginger ale."

"Well, you'll have to move. You can't stay in the lot."

"Why? I've been doing his for years. I just sit and drink coffee and ginger ale, listen to the radio."

"I've never seen you before."

"I've been gone for awhile. I know the guy behind the counter. Ask him. Ask Eric. He'll tell you."

"Eric's my husband. I own this place with him and I don't know you. You'll have to move."

"Well, let's ask Eric and he can introduce us."

"OK."

"Why can't I just sit and drink my coffee here? I bought it here," he asks the owner's wife as they traverse the snowy lot to the convenience store.

"Well, we've had a lot of problems with prostitution and drugs."

"I don't do prostitution and drugs. I'm just sipping my coffee," the questioned customer says to the owner's wife as he follows her to the store's front door.

Inside, the owner's wife fetches the owner/husband from out back behind the counter, through a door into an office. A soda fountain machine whirs beside the customer who is being questioned as he waits for Eric, the owner, to emerge from out back.

"Hey guy." No response. "Hey guy." The cashier looks over to the customer awaiting the owner. "She won't let me sit in the lot with my coffee."

"Well, that's the boss. I don't know."

The customer and cashier are friendly with another over the years. Eric, the owner, emerges from the doorway to the back office beside the whirring soda machine and coolers stocked with snacks. His wife stands behind him.

"Yeah. We can't have people in the lot."

"Not even to drink coffee and ginger ale? Other people do it."

"No they don't," Eric, the owner's wife chimes.

"We've had a problem with prostitution and drugs. So, we don't allow it. You can park, but once you buy your coffee: you are no longer a customer and have to leave. No more customer parking after that," the owner states as he slings a light box on top of a stack of boxes full of snacks and his wife lingers in the doorway to the back office behind Eric.

"So, these are new rules because I used to be able to park and hang out with Rich and drink my coffee."

"Yeah well, a lot of people were hanging out with Rich."

"I hang out with him, too," the questioned customer states indicating the cashier behind the counter registering another customer.

"Yeah well, we don't allow it."

"Alright then. I'll just go to Mohammed's store for my ginger ale and coffee."

"Alright. You do that," both Eric, the owner, and his wife state with his wife chiming: "Say hello to Mohammed."

At Mohammed's store across town, the soda fountain whirs and the ginger ale/coffee customer depresses the lever for ginger ale to spurt into his double gulp cup.

"Mr. Mohammed!" the customer exclaims as he eyes Mohammed, the owner, in his office out back of the cash registers through a door beside the soda fountain machine. "They just kicked me out of the store up town. They wouldn't let me park in the lot and drink my coffee."

"They did? You mean Mary Kay and um. ..."

"Yes. Eric. Do you know the reason they gave that I couldn't sit in their lot?"

"No. What?"

"They have a lot of prostitution and drugs. All I do is drink coffee and ginger ale. You know that."

"Yes. I know that. You don't do any of that stuff."

"I can still park in your lot and drink my coffee, right?"

"Yes. You can do that. I know you. You just drink your coffee."

"Well, gee," the customer states as the double gulp tops off with sputters.

"That's 27 cents more than the other 7-11," the customer states to the cashier as he slides a debit card into the register.

Outside, it is cold, brisk, sunlit, blue skies, not a cloud in the sky, a thin layer of snow and ice on walks and roads with an ever present sound of traffic along busy streets in "Jerk Balls Suburbs" where the questioned, ginger ale/coffee customer hates to live; but likes to sip coffee, drink ginger ale and listen to the radio in his vehicle while parking.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it! The store lot is broken. They're fixing.
