It is a relatively short trail, about 1.8 round trip if you go all the way to the bottom. The entire way to the falls is downhill. The hike back up/out is a bit more challenging with an elevation change for about 525 feet. It is one of the more popular stops which means there were a lot of people on the trail. The trail is very picturesque, and the waterfall is totally worth the hike. There are plenty of vantage points to take pictures and places to sit and enjoy the day.

Beautiful hike in the fall! We didn't find this hike to be challenging, though several people were struggling on the way back up (it starts at the top and goes down). If you hike semi-regularly and are fit, this is an easy hike.

Wonderful trail very close to the Harry F Byrd Visitor Center at mile marker 51. There is a small parking lot but expect after 10 am for the lot to be full. The trail is not difficult, keep in mind that the trail conditions can change with precipitation. The trail leads you to the upper part of the falls but to get that magical experience you will need to go another 1,000 ft to the lower outlook to get great views of this waterfall. This is an out and back trail 👣. At the trailhead which is clearly marked you are at 3,490 ft. Take your time and enjoy this break from the 105 mile Skyline Drive.

Elevation was pretty stiff for a short trail. It was about an hour total of the round trip to the Hollow Fall. The trail was very scenic and you walk along the sound of the stream, which is very refreshing.

We picked this hike because of my bad back and inability to handle long distances. The terrain was rough but manageable. The end result was well worth the journey. A walking stick is a great thing to have.

Shenandoah Park is just amazing. This hiking trail was hard for me. It’s a workout unless you hike all the time, then it’s probably average for you. I was taking breaks just getting up those hills. But the waterfalls are beautiful and a must go see.

Nice hike easy but all uphill return strenuous depending on your experience

It’s a pretty set of waterfalls and depending on the time of the year the flow varies. It’s picturesque. You can access it from a fire access road easily or from a dedicated trailhead which has more of an incline.

Beautiful hike! We got to see deers, squirrels and butterflies all the way down. The way up is a little bit challenging for people not used to working out, but super doable if done slowly. The falls were beautiful the day we visited cause it rained the day before. Water was very cold though, so no swimming in any of the water wholes close to the area. Highly recommend! Get there early though as parking gets full quickly given the popularity of the trail.

This is a great hike! I see why it's so popular for sure. It can be slippery after rain, so watch your step, and remember that you have to go back up the way you came which can be tough if you're carrying kids like we were. I'm definitely excited to see this hike again in the summer!

Have been on this hike many times. In the summer the stream is low and agonizingly tempting. On this visit it had rained a lot recently and the river was high resulting in a spectacular waterfall at the upper falls without the need to hike in fall weather. The clouds never lifted and so the entire hike was in steamy clouds. That kept the sun off but it was like hiking through a tropical rainforest. Animals seen include an owl a heron and a chipmunk

Beautiful trail, wasn't too long of a hike either. All downhill to get to the waterfall and all up hill to get back to the parking area. It was pretty busy while we were there, parking was a little tough to come by and there were plenty of people coming and going on the trail. Had to wait our turn to get some pictures of the waterfall. The creek/source of the falls runs right next to the trail the entire way which was pretty neat. Highly recommended!

Walk from parking area to the actual "Darkfalls" is like a mile or two. There are few hiking trails that go inside. The road/trail leading up to the waterfall is fine if you have a stroller or wheelchair. If you really want to hike hike? Please have food and plenty of water. Maybe one of those hiking sticks too. It's absolutely beautiful and pretty loud depending on where you are. Personally, I recommend going with people who are willing to go and not complaint about leaving too soon. No matter where you are, it is just stunning. Definitely wanna have some time in your hands if you are going.

This was a great hike with the family. The way down was challenging but well worth it! The falls were quite the sight! We eat some lunch and then started back up. The hike up was much more challenging... Our 6 year old did fine. Our 3 year old needed some help during the more tricky spots. Make sure you bring water and some snacks. Wear good trail shoes.

Beautiful trail, easy hike. Really beautiful views. The trails are wide and easy to pass people going in the opposite direction.

Really worth a visit!!

A good hike that will reward you with a wonderful waterfalls.
Be careful because it can be slippery, and since the trail on the east side of the mountain, it can get dark relatively quick.
One hike not to miss when one is on Skylidrive

Pretty easy path down. Lot of families with people of all ages hiking. It's all up hill on your way back, but not back breaking. Apologies for not capturing the main falls. Nice l relaxing shirt hike

This place was gorgeous! The day my family and I went it had rained in the morning and as the day went by, the weather got better. Slightly humid but it was roughly about three quarters of a mile until you get to the water fall. The air is so crisp and fresh walking. Going down towards the falls, it can get slippery due to the water. It's also a little hard to walk through the path and keeping a distance of 6 feet. It was a great walk down, but the hike to get back up to the parking area was not a joke. The water is very cool and refreshing during a hot humid day. I would totally recommend people to go at least once to see it for yourself.

This is a nice, easy hike for anyone who is active. The hike back can be more difficult if you're not an experienced hiker. The trail is a little rocky in some areas, so you need to watch your footing. The falls are really pretty & worth the effort.
