Great little hidden gem. I have driven past many times over the years and finally stopped for lunch. I sat at the bar and I had a bowl of the best fish chowder I have ever had. I know this is Gloucester and the fish should be fresh but this was fresher than fresh and seemed to be caught that morning. I ordered a bowl for take-out for my wife and managed to get it home while it was still hot. She's a freak about fish chowder because her mom used to make it every Friday. She also said it was the freshest fish chowder (Her mom called it Haddock Stew) she ever had and said it tasted great. I can't wait to go back and try their other dishes. I am very impressed and wish I had stopped in sooner.

We are traveling up the New England coast and just happened to stop by Charley’s Place for dinner. The food was delicious! The bowl of lobster bisque was huge and so creamy! It was full of lobster meat, enough for two people. I had a bacon and grilled cheese and my husband had an avocado BLT. We were satisfied with the portions. The bacon was thick and avocado was fresh. Charley’s Place did not disappoint!

Ate at Charlie's Place yesterday. Spouse and I each had a cup of haddock chowder and we split a fried clam dinner (which has gotten a little pricey at $35). But it was all excellent and worth the price. Oh yeah, the coffee was fresh and tasted good too.

New favorite I should have walked into decades ago!! Mom worked there about 60 years ago!! The entire crew really likes each other and the customers. The food is terrific.

Best Lobster Roll in Gloucester, I've tried atleast 4-5 different places and this hands down has the best. The restaurant is NOT big, maybe 10-12 tables, with a countertop if your eating alone. I highly recommend this place and always come here when I'm in town.

My husband and I stopped in around 2 pm after driving up from Mystic. We went in and it looked like all the little cafes I recall from “the last century”.
It was wonderful! They had fried smelts. This is not available in Savannah. (As I said we were on a food vacation eating all the things that are not in Savannah.) At Charley’s I ordered my first clam roll (with bellies) of our trip. Quick note: native New Englanders love our shellfish.
It was amazing.
We noted that Charlie’s had breakfast. We had 3 breakfasts there. Offerings included seasonal items as well as standard breakfast fare. Portions were large, it all tasted great!
Good place to go for clams and lobster roll. Bring the family. There’s something for everyone.

Charlie's Place in Gloucester is a good place for fried seafood. I have been there many times over the years. Today I had the fried clams, and my wife had the fried scallops from the takeout menu. A 2-minute drive away is Good Harbor Beach where we sat and ate our food. The menu has many choices for both breakfast and lunch with sandwiches and dinners. The seating area is small, especially during the pandemic. We have never been disappointed with any of our choices. Friendly, relaxed. and casual. Prices are fair and the quantity is enough.

This is a really cute little old school cafe. They have an extensive menu, very reasonable prices. We were very pleased with our choices.

Food was tasty, cooked just right. Service was super friendly. I had the fried haddock and it was honestly some of the best I have had in the region. I even splurged on the New England Grapenut Custard. If you have room for it you should definitely give it a try.

I consider myself a strawberry shortcake aficionado of sorts. I've tried diners all over New England, eating the different variations of this beloved dessert. In my opinion, the only way to prepare strawberry shortcake is with fresh, homemade biscuits - not with cheap sponge cake like so many places do. That being said, I am proud to say Charlie's Place knows how to do their strawberry shortcake the right way.

I can confidently rank them in the top 5 for the best strawberry shortcake in all of New England. If you prefer this dessert with biscuits - as you should - then don't pass this place up.

If you prefer it with sponge cake, then I suggest you try something else because you don't have the palate to appreciate the true greatness of a strawberry shortcake made with biscuits.

Anyway, Charlie's Place is a Gloucester staple. Everything from the staff to the diverse menu options is second to none. You simply must stop here if you are in the area.

Eat where the locals eat, I say. If you love that small diner feel with amazing food and staff but on a budget, Charlie's Place it is! You can't fo wrong with the lobster bisque soup and the apple pie is nice to take home for later. There isn't hardly much of a wait but also the tables don't stay empty for long.

Huge yummy portions. My husband and I could have ordered 1 Gloucester fish sandwich and shared it. Small order of onion rings could feed 3-4. Going back!!

Started going to Charlie's as a kid visiting my grandparents in the summer. I haven't been in Massachusetts in over 20 years and finally brought my own kids for a long weekend. We HAD to stop in and Charlie's and it did not disappoint.

Went for lunch and enjoyed it very much. The lobster roll and crab cake BLT were delicious with generous portions. We finished being too full for dessert!
