Beautiful views! James River, Chickahominy River, plantations, more. Nice path away from auto traffic. Goes from Richmond to Jamestown so there are a few areas where you have to cross streets but crossings have signals for pedestrians so I felt safe. Some challenging hills but lots of stretches where mostly flat. Lots of bridges where you cross over creeks. Whether you want to walk, run, bike slow or fast I highly recommend!! Treat yourself to one of a few restaurants nearby at Richmond Trailhead, Culs Courthouse Grill at Charles City Courthouse Trailhead, or Billsburg Brewery near Jamestown Trailhead.

Lovely little hidden gem of a park in the middle of the big city. Great trails and history all along the way. Watch out if super sensitive to poison ivy though, it's on the sides of almost every path.

A great way to travel by foot or bike along the canal and river getting a waterside view of the city. Lots of birds and interesting mix of infrastructure and nature.

The trailhead is well maintained and has free parking for roughly 20 cars. There is a port-a-john and repair station in the park. The trail goes about half a mile northwest from the park, and the rest of the Capital Trail goes to the southeast for another 51 miles. The northwestern part goes under an active freight line, which I thought was really cool.

Great Shiplock and Capital Trees project make for a very nice and informative walk. Lincoln was here!

Great location and surrounding amenities, including parking. Get there early, fills up quick! Paid parking lots available. Most riders and runners, walkers are very courteous and understand the basics.

This trail is a gem. It passes through several historically significant places. Several plantations are along the trail, some of which are open to the public. I rode from Richmond to Jamestown, where I stopped at Spoke Arts Cafe for refreshments. The trail is paved the entire way and well marked. Folks along the trail are friendly. There were officers and rangers at random spots along the trail that gave one the feeling of safety.

Another one of Virginia's gems. Walking the trail (went down about 2 miles from the Richmond start) gave a perspective I don't get while driving. The part we were on was in good condition. I'm looking forward to more time on it.

Near Richmond its pretty hilly. The farther east you go the small hills are about 5 degrees

Beautiful trail that shows the natural details of the city, while showing the history of the city. Highly recommend coming down to the James River and walking along the greenway. You can actually walk this trail all the way to Jamestown.

I drove to the Richmond trailhead from Williamsburg via route 5, the whole way feeling I wanted to build my endurance and bike the whole thing! It's a combination of sunny corn/grass fields, shaded wooded areas, and some road. There are multiple plantations to visit along the way if you so desire, a few B&B's, bridges that pass over part of the James - too much to mention here. I'm impressed with how much care and effort went into this 51.7 mile trail.

Great trail, with many headings so if theres a lot of foot traffic, just branch off and you're fine. Nice variety of scenery also.

Great trail for anyone looking to do a century ride if you complete the whole thing. Plenty of stops along the way and 99% of the trail is off of the main road which makes it very safe.

Also a great option for those looking for a nice hike or run near the trailheads as there are plenty of turnaround points along the way. The trail has mile markers to help you keep your bearings.

This is the best part of Southern Virginia that I have found yet.

We were actually checking out the amazing old canal locks. Great megalithic stonework. Of course, the Capital Trail is also great if you're on your bike and heading to Williamsburg. If you're on the canal walk near Bottoms Up Pizza, be sure to check out the replica of the container that Henry "Box" Brown used to ship himself to freedom in Philadelphia. Parking can be weird, but worth the effort.
