Resurrection Evangelical Lutheran Church

After my church closed, I searched around and landed at Resurrection. The people were very welcoming. We had a student minister who just left for another "call" who started a Sunday afternoon Spanish language service. Every Monday we have a food bank and help about 40 or so families from the area. At Christmas time we put together shoe boxes with small gifts to send to children in other countries.

My family came to Resurrection maybe a year before the first reviewer must have visited, and I have to disagree with his or her assessment. A lot of the members happen to be white, but that's not by design. Everyone is welcome, always.

Some people in the church are very reserved by nature, and although they are kind people, they aren't outgoing or gregarious. I would guess that what the reviewer experienced was discomfort born of shyness, and not unfriendliness. Sometimes it seems to take a week or two for members to feel comfortable approaching new visitors. That's not the case with everyone, though, and certainly not with our pastor. If he doesn't know you, he wants to meet you and find out what you're all about. Several new families have said recently that the reason they came back after their initial visit is because they saw us as friendly.

The church is also very active (and more all the time) with ministries that take us outside of the typical middle American suburban culture that makes up a lot of Hilliard. RELC works with a church on the near east side in a neighborhood where unemployment is rampant, and also serves at an OSU campus ministry. This summer, RELC is serving as one of two Hilliard host sites for SON Ministries, which provides breakfast, lunch and enrichment activities to kids who receive free and reduced-price lunches during the school year. Many of those kids happen to be Muslim. The point is that the people of RELC are actively inclusive and are truly trying to live out the mission that Christ gave us - to love God, and to love our neighbors as ourselves.
