This is a small store that serves as an outlet for the sale of knitted mainly scarves and head scarves made from the Musk Ox underwool or quivit. This is basically the wool shed from the belly of musk ox. As it is a naturally collected product and the animals are not shorn to obtsin it, quivit is naturally quite expensive. This natural product is super soft and super warm. The wool is not colored or dyed. There are several patterns that are knit by different tribes in Alaska. If the visit and decide to but, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I fell in love with musk ox when I saw them along side the Dalton highway. I read about this shop on the kiosk at the Hilton front desk Everything they have in their shop is gorgeous and is truly hey beautiful pieces of artwork hand knit with much talent and love. The staff there are very knowledgeable and friendly.

Each piece is unique and worth every penny!

Stopped by the Oomingmak Cooperative to learn a bit more about qiviut and was not disappointed! Would definitely stop by to meet the wonderful staff and learn about the process behind how qiviut clothing is made.

A cooperative of 250 people knitting with musk ox wool, one of the world's warmest natural materials. Natural colors. A great story of sustainable fabrication by industrious people.

A tiny freestanding store house in the middle of a business area. Paid parking on the street is on the other side of a nearly packed large pay for parking lot during normal business hours weekday. $1.75 in quarters will get you an hour. So, they have no parking right by their store. The store is tiny and has a few things out for example but not much other than hair or yarn samples in tiny tourist trap bags. If you want something they have them in bags filed away and you have to ask to see specific pieces. Best to look at examples online, educate yourself and then either buy through their online site or go with an idea in mind when you get there. They are very good at communicating about items bought through their site if they don't end up having the item you want. If they are busy, it could be difficult to get a good idea of what they have as there's not a lot of room or counterspace to stand at. Some items are backordered. But it's a great experience to go and actually feel the example pieces directly and then purchase as you see fit. They are worth the visit and consideration for a very beautiful, unique, and useful handcrafted item.

Local women's coop hand knitting all sorts of clothing: hats, scarfs, shawls, gloves, even dresses from musk ox wool. It's warmer than sheep wool, has no lanolin or itch and maintains its shape no matter what temperature of water it is washed in. A giant musk ox only produces about 5 pounds of this under coat, so it's not cheap. It is beautiful and you usually get to meet some of the knitters from the 21 remote communities involved. Each community uses different designs, which are explained. Not wheel chair accessible, but it's only 3 steps up and the shop is small, so our two people with limited mobility did fine.

This shop sells items that are both beautiful and unique. The reviewers that complain about the price are missing the point entirely. I travel extensively around the world for my job, unique and locally traditional items that require skillful craftsmanship are increasingly hard to find in our increasingly globalized world. Arthur helped me with my purchase, he is friendly and very knowledgeable and if you give him the chance he will be able to explain why these items cost what they do. It’s entirely justified. My opinion is that these aren’t garments you buy at the Gap and throw away after a season, these are heirlooms that will last if properly cared for. If you love fiber and beautiful organic things, the shop for this co-op is a must see.

As a travel agent:
This is a very interesting co-op where over 200 Native Alaskan woman get together and knit scarves. Since 1969, qiviut.-hand knitted scarves are made from soft Ox fur and sold at this corner building.
They were a bit pricey ($180) but very soft. I already have one from Iceland so I didn't purchase one here.
It's great to support the hand knitted co-op and they have a few patterns but each scarf is unique like a snowflake.

Great place. Unique spot with craft done by the native population. The animal hair used (musk ox) is much softer than wool and non itchy. Pricey, but worth it, and you are supporting a good cause. Ignore the weird comment about hunting the animals - you don't kill a sheep to get its wool!

I love that each hat is handmade by someone different throughout the state! These are the warmest and softest hats I've ever worn! They are a little more on the expensive side but absolutely worth the money!!

Purchased a smoke ring here. Excellent quality and customer service. I love qiviut and was so sad when my last scarf was ruined by a new puppy. The lady looked through my photos of my old scarf and helped me pick out one with a similar pattern. So soft and warm! I can't imagine facing an Alaskan winter without my qiviut scarf.

This is an unassuming and little known store front where local native Alaskans weave and knit qiviut garments. Qiviut is fiber collected from wild musk ox that is processed into yarn. Local village women knit this yarn into mostly hats and scarves that are amazingly warm, water resistant and lightweight. It's the warmest natural fiber known. It is a hidden gem if you are visiting Alaska and are seeking a unique and genuine Alaskan gift.

It is a very small shop staffed with native personnel who are very familiar with the products offered. Musk ox is like cashmere. Very soft and very warm. Prices are what you would pay for most fur products. If you are in the area check it oyt

I love all information regarding quiviut yarn and the handmade products from it. Hollow fiber hairs from the musk ox Are softer than cashmere and Is a better insulator. Product sold online and in Alaska and British Columbia.
