It's difficult for me to rate a cemetery 🪦 because loved ones are buried here. This cemetery I have driven by countless times without a second thought. I decided to explore while on a therapeutic walk when I noticed the historical information ℹ posted on a sign by the entrance.
William Whipple, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and family members are also buried here.
I recognized quite a few of the names and I was interested with the backgrounds of the people buried here.
A number of gravestones are in bad shape. They are faded, cracked and broken in half. One gravestone was in two pieces and placed to the side of a path. There was litter 🚯 as well as flags placed next to graves.
I'm sure the Spring 🌼 cleanup will improve this cemetery. I hope there will be an attempt to repair or replace the broken gravestones.
The cemetery borders North Mill Pond.

The Town of Portsmouth purchased this land in 1753 for 150 pounds from Col. John Hart, commander of the N.H. Regiment at Louisburg. General William Whipple, Signer of the Declaration of Independence, Gov. John Langdon, Signer of the Constitution, Capt. Thomas Thompson, of the Continental Ship Raleigh, are among noted citizens buried here.

Truly an honored place of rest for many of our heroes from when America first became a nation. Notably seen is a headstone for Thomas Harvey, who reportedly served with George Washington. Such great history! God rest his soul!

Nature is reclaiming the graveyard. Inscriptions on stones hard to read, most messages cannot be read.

I always walk through here when I visit Portsmouth, there's also benches to sit on all the way in the back.

Старинное кладбище, в прекрасном состоянии... Могилы и склепы тех, кто начинал строить Америку! Тишина, спокойствие и умиротворение...
