This is one of my favorite parks nearby NYC (about 1 hour away). My go to trail is the Three Lakes Trail/Appalachian Trail that you can park off of Dennytown Road. Lots of beautiful wildflowers (Lady Slippers!) Are starting to come up. Gorgeous place to hike.

Update: there are a lot of people that fish here. Please do your part and pick up after yourselves. Found a dead bird wing that got wrapped up in a line and lure. Really quite sad.

Great NY state park about an hour away from Bergen County NJ. Only $9 to park, no per person charge. Water is warm, clean. And the facilities are great. Boat rental area (see photos) and food services (see photos).

Pros: You can barbecue off the sand area. And there are clean restroom/shower areas.

Cons: rocks on the beach, quite rocky be careful with your feet (see photos)

All in all it’s a keeper. Not our first time going there.

I've been coming to this park for several years now and is still my favorite of the state parks I've camped at. Most of the sites are secluded enough and are spread apart nicely. I chose site 78, one I've stayed at before. The young woman who checked me in was very nice and welcoming. I like the recent changes to the registration booth.

There was a recent change to Canopus Lake that blocked off access to the peninsula, due to rehabilitation. They also removed the picnic bench from this area. I believe this was in response to overcrowding due to covid lock downs; more people were swimming in non designated areas. While I miss walking out on the peninsula, I understand the decision to close it.

Beautiful place to hike any time of the year...but during the mountain laurel bloom...absolutely magical. Trails are very well marked too. I accessed from Dennytown Rd (Catfish Trail)

It’s really nice having such a pretty lake close by. The water was nice and it wasn’t overly crowded. There are bathrooms close and plenty of parking. Highly recommended.

This was a very nice campground to stay at. The views are beautiful and the walking trails aren't too challenging for small children. Some of our neighbors were a little noisy and blasted music, but it didn't affect us too much.

The Canopus Lake beach is a nice place to be on summer specially when the temperatures are 90 F! Water is cold but it feels good!
It has a beach too.

1st time to this lake - it was great!!! I was sceptical about some reviews by others here, but as I figured - they were not accurate.
The water was clean and clear and there was no smell😷. On the sides of the beach is where the water moss accumulates. It's a lake and not the ocean 🌊 so there is no seaweed😃. There are 🌲 and vegetation surrounding the lake, so of course it's going to get into the water.
The atmosphere was wonderful because there is no music allowed! YEAAAA!!! I was able to here the wonderful sounds of people speaking, laughing and just having fun!!! It was really great. Hopefully they will continue to keep it without the music.
The boat rentals are suspended this year because of COVID-19. Fishing 🎣 is allowed without a license - another great benefit.
I really loved this place. It's also adjacent to hiking trails - wow!!! I plan to go back a few more times before time runs out! 😃.
The grills are taken up by the early risers that already know the layout. This place has it all, so you can really appreciate it by getting there early!!! A-1 place

I love the Canupos beach! The bbq grill is overlooking the lake. You just need to come early to get a spot because it's not a lot of table. The sandy area is wide. The restroom and shower room is clean.Very relaxing place for the family.

Visited on mid June 2020. After driving so many places to have bbq and swim I Found luckily this is open and not crowded. Ticket for 1 car is $ 8.
Really nice place all of your family can enjoy the swim, play or bbq. The beach is considerably big has lot of space. Fishing is allowed.
Car park is huge. And its gravel ground. Also has grass area in the park may can play other sport I think. Seen few deers roaming in the grass area.
In the beach they have benches and grills.
The complex has family changing rooms, restrooms and out door showers. Also has small kiosk with some snaks and drinks.
I really appreciate the young staff for there courtesy and informativenes. From NY city it will takes about 50 min by car . Also can go by Hudson line train to Beacon and take a taxi.

Awesome hiker friendly stop. Hikers...stay here, it is great! Bathrooms, electricity, a pond to swim in, boats, and a good concession stand from 10-6 most days for burgers, etc. Check this place out, you will love it!

What a great, underutilized park. There are miles and miles of hiking trails, around 20 miles is open to mountain bikes too and the lake and beach are a nice spot to spend a summer afternoon for sure. There's a groomed XC Ski loop when the snow is right and there's a large campground near where the Appalachian Trail goes through.

There used to be an old lift served ski area here many years ago too, that's where the sign in the picture is from. The parking lot and old lodge are still visible just north of Rt 301 on the Taconic Pkwy.

The newly renovated facilities are gorgeous and skiing in winter great when there is enough snow. Trails very well groomed also.

The staff is awesome!! I love walking all of the trails. The trails have markers and we downloaded an app that shows us exactly where we are so we never get lost.

Great place for the family. Everyone was so friendly including the beach goers. I love an atmosphere like that. I also love that the fish swim right up to you. Some children fed it bread. Really really cute.

Great place to spend the day in the summer. Plenty of beach space, swimming, boat rentals. Be aware, they wont let you float on your floaties. Which really bummed me out...but other than that, clean bathrooms, a little burger place, and conveniently located

My wife and I went to the section that's right off route 9, I can't remember the name of the road. It was definitely worth the hike. The remnants of old buildings and all the mountains were awesome to look at. Lots of different trails and they keep them well maintained. No jumping over fallen trees or anything. I like it a lot better than the rail trail. Way more to look at and you're on actual dirt, Not pavement. It makes it feel like there's no destination. Easy to lose track of time. We can't wait to go back.
