I recently had the pleasure of exploring Charley’s Loop Trail within Purgatory Chasm State Reservation. This hike holds a special place as it marked my first hiking adventure in Rhode Island after relocating from California.
Me & my brother embarked on our journey early in the morning, and with the crisp fall air, it felt a bit chilly at first. However, as we delved further into the trail, the briskness transformed into a comfortable warmth.
The natural beauty surrounded us was astounding. Throughout the hike, we were treated to sightings of squirrels, including adorable baby squirrels, vibrant woodpeckers, and even a glimpse of a deer. The serene atmosphere, set against the backdrop of towering boulders and the gentle sounds of water and wind rustling through the trees, created an incredibly peaceful experience.
The two-mile hike was of light difficulty, making it accessible to a wide range of hikers. What , I truly appreciated about this trail was the clarity of the path. There were multiple trails available, each clearly marked with arrows and directions. You'd be hard-pressed to get lost here.
Another fantastic aspect of this place is its family-friendliness. Beyond the hiking trail, there's a kid-friendly park nearby, making it an ideal spot for a family outing. The area is also dog-friendly, which is great for pet owners. Additionally, there are designated barbecue areas, perfect for a fun outdoor cookout with loved ones.
I highly recommend this trail, whether you're looking for a picturesque hike, a great spot for photography, or simply a day of outdoor enjoyment. It's the kind of place that you'll want to return to with friends and family, as it offers a little something for everyone.

My grandsons love to go there. There get to run around. Their favorite place is the giant rock. They like to slide down it. Unfortunately this time it was trapped off. But they found people to play with on the field after playing around the playground area.

Absolutely beautiful landscape and a fun hike/rock climb. Was not expecting it to be so engaging but it felt great being out there amongst the giant slabs. The facilities and grounds are also very clean and well managed. We will be visiting more often, that's for sure!

Great spot to take kids/dogs on a hike. The parking is free most of the year and they had a public restroom available with a water fill station, picnic tables and a new playground area for children.

So much fun! There are trails that are easy and plenty of rock scrambles if you want a challenge.

This is a national treasure. A glacier apparently made these beautiful rock structures. I love this place I always have even as a kid. Well marked trails. Discover everything from lover's leap to fat man's misery! Take the walk down to Little purgatory. It's worth it.

Beautiful place to visit with family and friends. There are many trails from easy friendly to challenging rocks hike. The facilities are clean and the visitor center is great with clean baths and water fountain. The trails are well marked. They are currently in construction to improve the site, so the big rock outside is off limits.

Purgatory Chasm is a very cool reservation to visit. The rock formations are very cool and quite a view. Definitely worth visiting! There is a plenty big parking lot and the drive their is quite easy. The hike through the chasm itself is also quick and exciting. Just be careful going through it as certain parts can be a little dangerous!

The chasm in sutton was an unexpected delight. I was awestruck by the glaciers and very pleased that the difficulty ranged from beginner to advanced.

Love this place so much. Any time we head up to Massachusetts, we go to this location. I'll never tire of the tranquility I feel walking through these trails! Pictures don't do it justice, you can't capture the depth and beauty of the chasm.

Be prepared to climb and hike a little. This place is beautiful, and we are going to picnic on top of Lovers Leap next time

I had so much fun there. It’s been a good 30 years since I’ve been there. It’s a great quarter-mile long rock climbing experience. It’s great for families. I would think the average 10 year old would love this Because there were lots of kids and families. The cost of parking is five dollars for a Massachusetts resident and $20 for out-of-state residents.

This place is a great place to go out to and get some exercise and spend time in the woods hiking a wide range of trails.

Currently they are doing some renovations and upgrading to the parking and trail entrances. There are some days that they have closed the trails because of construction.

This is one of the most fun and beautiful short trail hikes we’ve done with the kids. The rock formations are incredible and that part of the trail is a bit challenging, requiring us to really watch our steps, make sure we were doing the right move, but so much fun! At the end one point I’m the trail, there’s a small waterfall (at least during summer, maybe spring the water comes down stronger from the melting snow). There’s a $5parking fee for the day. The visitor center offer bathrooms and some history of the place. It’s a great way to have some family time and spend a morning or an afternoon!

Difficult trails, in that you are using your hands and feet to crawl down over a rock on the trail. I say "difficult" in that it's not a paved walkway, nor even dirt pathway, but some boulder crawling and climbing (all in good fun!) trails. Just be advised. AND there are a few lookout decks, that are easily accessible via wheelchair or stroller, so there is that too.

Always a great place to go for a hike or climb the rocks.

Simply incredible. Very technical and uneven hiking terrain, lots of opportunities to sprain an ankle so go slow and make sure you have good footwear. Parking is cheap ($5 for ma residents.) Ample parking and a nice visitor center. Playground is also well kept and spacious. Just a great way to spend a couple hours with the family.

We had a great time hiking here and enjoyed hiking on the rocks. It's a place where the average person can go to enjoy a walk in and around the rocks. While mountain hikers or rock climbers won't find it a challenge, it's perfect for getting young kids and adults out for the day enjoying nature.

Plus it's free except for a parking fee.

Very fun park. A bit of boulder climbing. We are sneakers or hiking boots. Good for kids.

Great walk especially because it's free entry. Of note, parking is $5 for MA plates and $20 for out of state (was surprised it was so expensive). Can take the rocky route or just walk along straight paths. Great spot for kids to get some energy out
