We chose to see McLeod because it was a little more affordable compared to other plantations and because we had heard good things. We weren't disappointed. We got there around 11:15am and our tour started at 1130am. Our guide John was terrific. Very knowledgeable, spoke very well and really cares about what he does. The tour is about a half hour and only goes about some of the grounds. You never stray too far, but we were able to go into the Big House. It was a great experience and really left us feeling some type of way.

Absolutely one of the finest plantation tours I have taken. Tobi (not sure of spelling) was passionately invested in the historical significance of this plantation and it came through (with a big impact might I add) during her guided tour. The grounds and home, while amazing, were not the attraction. The spotlight not being placed on the land owner but rather the enslaved was most illuminating and was/is the attraction here. No sugar coating, just pure knowledge and facts. A real eye opener of a tour. Highly encourage a visit and tour with Ms. Tobi.

The historical site is very well maintained. I opted to just walk without doing the guided tour. Towards the end of my walk around the museum, I decided to visit the McLeod home where I encountered a very nice guide named Suzanne, who answered every one of my questions and who effortlessly gave me a wonderfully detailed synopsis of the history of the plantation (I was in a rush). She was very kind, funny and knew her stuff.

A fantastic and highly recommended plantation site to visit - anticipate 2 hours to see everything.

Guided tours are included with your admission - Paul was our guide and he was a wealth of information.. to include his passion for honestly recounting the human history and misery that occurred here.

Easy to find, ample parking. This plantation tour (we self guided) is one of the few that you see through the perspective of the enslaved. It was a short drive from Charleston and had many buildings preserved. It took about an hour to tour the grounds and listen to the self guided recordings. Go across the street to the cemetery and the creek to be able to appreciate the size of the plantation. The oak trees and Spanish moss are glorious as well.

Excellent historical tour of the plantation is included with admission. Our tour guide, Allen, was terrific. He was very informative and honest about the history of the plantation. The grounds are beautiful, and you can walk through the house at no additional charge.

The birth of our nation wasn't always a pleasant story. But to see how even in the worst of times humanity found a way to help each other to rise above these horrid times is hopeful. And sad. This plantation is apart of our history and the people working here do an amazing job to respect and teach it. The land is beautiful and the stories are sad but everyone should come here to see and hear of it. Thank you to our tour guide Isop(I'm so sorry is I spelled it wrong) but you made this experience thank you. May god bless all the souls that passed through here

We toured today, and it was amazing. Our tour guide was very informative and thorough. The individuals complaining about the house not having furniture or the cemetery not having headstones clearly didn’t pay attention nor do their research prior. Not really sure how you can leave a negative review for that *eye roll*. Lovely property with so much history.

The guided tour John gave was amazing, we leaned a lot about the family and the enslaved people that lived there and the complex relationships that existed. The presentor was able to build on the stories as they echo through time. It has left me more curious to learn more about this.

Had a phenomenal tour here. Was expecting a basic tour with common knowledge about plantations. Instead we had a fantastic guide focusing on the enslaved peoples' perspective throughout the years. I wished the tour could be longer as the wealth of knowledge from our guide was outstanding and she held everyone's attention with ease throughout the hour. They are still doing a lot of active work uncovering the history here and I will certainly be back again next time we visit the area.

My husband took me here on our trip to Charleston and all I can say is WOW! The guide was extremely informative. This plantation is the original houses and barns. I must say I got a little emotional walking through this plantation to think of what people endured here. But it was an absolutely breathtaking experience learning of the horrific history a lot of people encountered throughout the 1800’s. It’s a bit of a weird feeling but you really have to go to understand. I highly recommend this site!!!!

We've been to many plantation tours as a way to become more educated on the true plight of the enslaved. McLeod plantation was amazing. Our tour guide, Paul, made sure to give the full information of what was endured, and made sure to use words that accurately described the history without being overly dramatic or indulgent. The self guided tour was also very informative. The grounds are well maintained and clean, and fairly accessible. I would highly recommend this tour.

McLeod Plantation Historic Site was established in 1851 and had seen through the significant history of Charleston and USA, particular for the black slaves. From the reviews that we’ve read online, unlike the other plantations that focuses on the beautiful gardens and grand mansions, the tours at McLeod Plantation tells of the truth of the lives of slaves on the plantations.

We started with a quick overview of the plantation and looking at the oak trees, we were told that the “Spanish Moss” on the oak trees were neither “Spanish” nor “Moss”. They’re actually epiphytic flowering plants or epiphytes that does not rely on the host tree. Instead, they are like air plants that take in the nutrient and moisture from the air. As for the overview, we found that the plantation was not in its original state – the McLeods wanted to capitalise on the plantation tourism and landscaped it about 100 years ago.

This place is incredible. The tour is from the enslaved person's point of view. Our tour guide, Toby, who is Gullah, spoke from the heart and a place of truth. This is a must see for all who want to learn about True American history.

Great Experience! The guides are very good at explaining the heritage. Beautiful place, and well maintained. The house is something else. The details are unbelievable. Staff is great, and if you have a gold pass, you can get up to 4 people in. Highly recommend!

Awesome. Ista was an absolute font of knowledge, he had a really interesting reading suggestion, and his tour covered and unbelievable amount of ground (I've taken history classes that couldn't cover so much so quickly). We learned TONS, and are still digesting and discussing several days later.

The site has live, growing cotton plants you can interact with, lots of remnants from the enslaved people living there you can memorialize, and the history available is really in depth. Definitely worth the ticket price.

We can't compare it to other plantations in the area, as it's the only one we had time to go to, but we were extremely happy with our choice! Highly recommend.
