Great out of the way, place to visit. Lots of history of New Mexico. Nice hiking areas as well and a covered picnic area.

Amazing place lost in time. Only a 2-300 acre site but due to its remoteness it’s vast in its overall perspective. Steeped in history going initially 400 years back to the actual mission but the people settling the land in that area go back another 500 years. Worth a slow walk through and wonder back. Enjoy.

Nice place to visit; short and nice walk, clean, with nice paths. The signs are informative, and the person who greeted us was very nice. The ruins were interesting and beautiful. I am glad we could bring our dogs as long as they were leashed and we cleaned up after them 😊

Such a great stop on a road trip. The Ranger, Alex, was the most knowledgeable and pleasant person you could hope to meet. The stories of the area he shared and exploring the Ruins were so exciting. Great picnic area and clean flushing bathrooms. And the rolling hills, some red rock, spotted with bush is so delightful. Great way to spend a couple of hours. Keep in mind that our national and state parks are slowly disappearing because of budget cuts so I try to help by making a purchase from the gift shops whenever I can. ❤

Free! Nice little walk around the ruins. Covered benches to have lunch and bathrooms. Check out the other ruins just 25 minutes away as well!

Great visit to ancient Franciscan ruins built around Pueblo villages. An opportunity to see how catholicism appeared to understand and accept indigenous New Mexican religion.

Beautiful Spanish ruins in the middle of nowhere New Mexico. The views from this place are fantastic compared to the other ones but the sun was almost too much. Really loved visiting here and we'll be back when the weather is a little cooler.

Abo ruins was a beautiful stop. We drive from Albuquerque for a day trip. There are two rides to get there, one in each side of the mountains. I would recommend heading east on I-40 and driving the evening highway. It is beautiful. You pass small towns, pretty mountain scenery than you drive out into the flat empty New Mexico country side.

Abo is an old mission. The self guided walking tour is easy and informative. The scenery is gorgeous. The mission is a great backdrop for pictures. I would highly recommend visiting this mission.

Great place to spend a bit of time. True New Mexico history is about an hour and a half from ABQ. Bring a picnic lunch, there is a covered area with restrooms on site. Leave some time to visit the little town of Mountainair, 8 miles away.

New Mexico 01-2024 ABO Ruins Salina Misson in the Mountaire area of New Mexico. Medieval Architecture looks like castle ruins. It was extremely cold with the wind whipping wildly. It was like 6 degrees !!

It's located in the mountains and it's a beautiful drive up the ruins. It's Free to check it out.
Check out all the photos, it's absolutely amazing there!

Loved this site! The park rangers were friendly and knowledgeable, and the tour was well marked. We read our own guide book, but the rangers were well prepared to answer our questions.

Incredible place. One can feel that this place is special. Not a particular large area, but one could spend hours just enjoying the views, which are breathtaking.

Excellent place to stop. I'm so glad that I found this location. It's just a short distance from the road. You won't regret the time it takes out of your travels. Wonderful path through the ruins that are peppered signs with historical information. Great photo ops.

We are full-time RVers and also working as we travel.

On our way from Las Cruces to Santa Fe in New Mexico, we stopped at the Abo ruins. It is yet another place where the European culture (in the form of Catholic friars) overlaid the native culture. Nor were they the first. The Tompiro, probably the first to settle in the area, facilitated trade between the Pueblo to the west in the Rio Grande valley and the plains Indians to the east. The Pueblo became more dominant in the area, followed by the Europeans, only to be wiped out by the Apache and drought.

The place is peaceful, and one can almost feel the history surrounding you. People there don't appear to be in a rush, rather taking in the ruins around them. Another small gem that lets Americans (and others) learn more about our past.

It was a great place to visit and the views are great! I told my 6 year old granddaughter that does not enjoy hiking, this is where they got the idea for Minecraft (the game) and she fell in love with it! She asked a lot of questions and we read the history together. I think she understands how special this place is.

Why anyone would give this historic site less than a 4 is beyond me, but maybe it just isn't someone's thing...which it exactly what I thought! Went on a whim...just an amazing piece of history that doesn't take a very long time to take in. A great paved walking path, interesting signage, just a great time! Thank you NPS for your efforts!!! Bathrooms available at the visitor center. Nice picnic area available as well. Dogs are okay, I took both of my pups...only one or two people there. Just go and experience something new!!

Easy trip from Albuquerque. Half mile hike around the area. Benches along the way. They have picnic tables set up under the Cottonwood trees.
