El Potro Restaurant

AUTHENTIC Mexican and Central American Cuisine! We really enjoyed eating at El Potro. I tend to judge a Mexican place by the chips and salsa they serve you when you sit down and the salsa and chips here did NOT disappoint. The salsa was fresh made and chips had great flavor. We started with Margaritas and Mojitos which were delicious. They have many drink options and the Mexcal Margarita had a lovely smokey flavor to it. They have an extensive menu of authentic dishes and between three of us we sampled the Fajitas Mix, Camaron a La Diabla (Shrimp in Spicy Red Sauce) and Tacos (Chicken, Carne Asada and their Special Campechana (mix of a variety of proteins). We finished with the Churros which came with a side of Strawberry Ice Cream. The churros were warm and crispy. The service was wonderful. Looking forward to going back. There is also a Mercado attached to the restaurant that was closed by the time we arrived for dinner but looks like it had lots of authentic food items for your home.

Very friendly staff and delicious food with an unassuming storefront. This is a hidden gem of St. Louis. Skip the wait at Sunny's and come here as the food is much better without all the noise. Free chips and fresh salsa. The margarita pitcher will get you about 7 or 8 drinks. The chicken or steak fajitas are very good with quality ingredients and portions that allow for a follow up meal. Choriqueso is solid. Beans and rice are good. Everything is good here. Quit reading about it and go already.

El Potro had great service, great food, and great Margs. The server was really nice and even topped off our margarita when it was getting low. It can be hard finding a great Mexican restaurant in Missouri, but El Potro is as authentic as it gets. Check it out!

First time visiting El Potro, had the enchiladas with mole and 3 tacos dinner Al pastor and carne asada. Everything from the service to the food was great. The owner and staff are super nice!! Will definitely go back , next time will try the molcajete.

The staff was very attentive. They had chips and salsa to our table before we even sat down. They were friendly with our kids and even topped off our margs after we took a few delicious sips. You can tell they like to take care of their customers. The food was much better than expected. The menu is Tex-mex and the food has a home cooked quality to it. For anyone crazing solid American Mexkcsn foods great margs, and fantastic service, this is your spot.

The food was very good and the service was good too. The owner himself took care of us. When he made the marguitas, there was a little left, so when the drinks were somewhat drank, he came over and topped them off! It's a little difficult to find as it sits back off the road. There's also a Mexican market in the small plaza.

My dad is from Mexico and I grew up in Texas, so I’m always hunting for Mexican restaurants in St Louis that actually season their food and don’t only have tacos. El Potro is my favorite so far! The vibe is very no-frills, but the staff is super nice and it’s good solid Mexican food that tastes authentic. I love going there for a torta and an agua de jamaica. And yes, the margaritas are good too.

El Potro is less than five minutes from my mom’s house, so we thought we’d give it a try one day last month. We loved it and have been going back there ever since! The staff always greet me warmly and make me feel like family. I have only done to-go orders, and they’ve always been correct and HOT! The portion sizes are great and the food tastes great! I love how they actually put a great amount of meat in the fajitas, when most Mexican restaurants skimp you. But, the main reason I return (besides the food) is because of how much you can tell that they care about their customers. The food has been ready in 15 minutes every time I order except once. That one time they were super apologetic, had it to me just five minutes late, AND while I waited they poured me a free glass of horchata! You could tell they really valued that their customers have a good experience in their restaurant. Always happy to recommend El Potro!

Excellent food, with excellent service, the waiter we had was extremely nice and even topped off our margaritas for FREE!!! Did I mention amazing food as well!

Went early for dinner. Of course, food came out quick. It was good and plenty. I took some home. I had their Chile Rellenos, came with 2 large ones, rice and beans. Also, their chilliquillies and cheese dip. Yum

This place is hidden, but soo absolutely delicious food! We ordered the guacamole, beef tacos, steak & chicken quesillas. They were so fresh & great! Even the spanish rice was yummy & we barely like the rice we are served. Definitely try this place out! You will not regret it. 👍👍

Wonderful food and service. Went on Sunday afternoon football game was on. A must try if you are in the area. We had guacamole, chicken tamales and dinner special was very good.

A great Hole in the wall Restaurant if you want some good Mexican food. The chips and salsa are amazing! If you like tacos, the asada tacos are an excellent choice. The owner tended to us, very polite and helpful the whole time.

I stopped in on a whim and sat at the bar. The owner was very welcoming and explained a couple dishes I haven't seen elsewhere. I went with the tlayudas and didn't regret it - I hadn't enjoyed Mexican food this much in a long time. It was clearly prepared with care and I look forward to trying more of the menu. The drinks look good, too - made fresh. I'm pretty sure this is our new go-to place when we feel like Mexican.

One of the best authentic Mexican spots in town. The owners are so nice (and generous with their tequila)! Makes you feel like you’re visiting old friends.

LOVE THIS PLACE! Friendly staff, great drinks, and tasty food. Salsa with chips is flavorful and the cheese dip was fantastic. I will be back here soon!
