They were able to update me on all the road conditions, even the dirt roads which allowed a fantastic round trip to the South Tufa. Gave me a great map of the area to plan our route; drawing in dirt roads not on the map. Also updated us on the possible power outages due to power line maintenance.

This is one of the best resources for learning about Mono lake and preserving it. The committee was the force behind stopping the LA Department of water and Power from turning the Mono basin into a dry wasteland like they did to the Owens valley to the south. Been a member for 22 years, money well spent as their stream restoration programs have visibly and hugely improved the entire ecosystem since I joined. A must visit if you enjoy the beauty of the lake and basin.

Somehow I didn't take a single picture in here. This is a great stop, if you are just passing through, stop here! Restrooms are great. They offer free wifi. You can get interesting info on Mo-No lake (You totally look at it the whole way here!) and even help support it. Entrance, parking, restroom, and counter are all accessible. Plenty of parking, located right on the 395. Also, they have some awesome souvenirs! Looking for a great gift, you can find something here.

Great source of local information. Employee was very helpful she pulled up the web page listing current fall color conditions so I could decide where to go next. They have free 24-hour Wi-Fi. Password is on the door if they are closed.

Small but impressive gift shop and information center. They also have a great selection of books, covering mostly nature, discoveries, and exploration. John Muir, Jack London, and many more can be found here. When you come along the way, stop here to get some food for your brain. Keep up the great work!

Great little gift shop, bookstore and information center. Gallery exhibit, movie and history of lake. Lots of hand crafted items and huge selection of books. Nice people. Tours at tufa site on weekends. Only place open in town in winter that is open for gifts. Nice little stop!

Easy to find, good wifi and helpful staff. I had booked their free tufa tour online, but did not receive confirmation. They got me sorted quickly, and explained they had technical issues and their technical person was on vacation that week.

The tour itself was hosted by an intern who was very knowledgeable and kind. I learned a lot about the unique ecology of Mono Lake, their efforts on preserving it and educating young kids.

What a great resource for the area. Informative displays and tons of great books (see Conifers of California).

The young woman providing information was also very pleasant and so helpful. This place is every bit as good as a ranger station / visitor center but without the huge crowds!

Wonderful info center for Mono Lake. Find out about its ecology, geology and about the water politics of California. It's also a book shop and a shop of very tasteful gifts. And staffed by knowledgeable and friendly staff.

Mono lake is an invaluable part of the north south American by way for migratory birds, close to being completely destroyed by LA's thirst. But an agreement was made in 1994 that gave the lake some hope of stabilization and possible future restoration.

Great people with dedicated interns from diverse fields related to ecology. Incredibly rich resources. Essential books and maps. We keep going back every year for almost 30 years, to explore the lake, do our bit to save it, and educate our family and friends about the significance in and of itself of this area. Check it and center out!

About Mono Lake
Lake in California

Mono Lake is a saline soda lake in Mono County, California, formed at least 760,000 years ago as a terminal lake in an endorheic basin. The lack of an outlet causes high levels of salts to accumulate in the lake which make its water alkaline. source
