Tanners Ridge Overlook

Great place to bring the kids for an evening of star gazing without a lot light noise. It's about a 2 hour drive from Arlington, VA and highly recommend dinner at the lodge first then heading over to the viewing area with blankets and hand warmers if visiting during the spring or fall. Bring a scope if you have one but also most folks would be willing to share with curious kids. We usually do this once every September and while you can camp or get a room at the lodge, we prefer to drive home. It's best if you can stay till 10 or 11 PM to get the most of the stars. Don't miss the sunset though, it's just beautiful from this vantage point.

Any of the overlooks are stellar but the city views after dark are so special. I'm never disappointed on my drives in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
