This is an awesome hands-on experience. The staff were kind and informative. The building doesn't have immediate ease of access for those in wheelchairs or limited mobility, so there's some extra planning required. The videos are not closed captioned or subtitled. So that's an unfortunate lack of access on that front.

This is the first public school in the state of Georgia, built for the poor citizensof the community. It opened in the 1850s and closed in the 1970s. The center features history of the indigenous people of the land, a maritime museum, the original classroom, the layout of the city of Savannah, outdoor courtyards, and an architectural museum. Great wealth of information at this place

This historic structure, referred to as Savannah's Cradle of Public Education is a fantastic place to visit. The host. Betsy Haun was very friendly and knowledgeable. The exhibits are wonderful and should be viewed by adults and children alike. My favorite exhibit was the classroom with the desks in it. I spotted the exact type of desk I had in Public School in the 1960s. This site deserves a five star review and tributes should be paid to not only for the City of Savannah, but to their education system as well.

I love the Massie Heritage Center. I suggest the Massie on a daily basis because it is one of the best all-encompassing museums in the city. I feel the Massie does a fantastic job on featuring all of Savannah's History. Why she was founded, the Native Americans who lived her before us, Slavery, Emancipation, Architecture and the city's Preservation History. This is an explore at your own pace, there is a lot of reading, being it is one of the only places who discuss the Native Americans they do a pretty good job, is it perfect, no. However, covering all of these areas with a building that dates back to 1853 is extremely difficult, it was also an Elementary School, so the bathrooms are smaller than a normal museum. I also love the school on the top floor with the bell. My children have visited the Massie on numerous occasions for school. They have always enjoyed it; they have never mentioned the docents were mean or rude (trust me they both would have), I also have never experience this in all my visits to the Massie. This museum is also part of our school system, they do not get much funding for this museum. For the budget they have they do a fantastic job.

As for the Bus Parking comment, Bus Parking is dictated by the city, not by the Massie Heritage Center. I strongly suggest if they say don't park in a certain place, you listen because the fines are costly, even if you stay with the vehicle.

For a good orientation about Savannah history and architecture, be sure to check out the Massie Heritage Center, which is located in a John Norris-designed school building from the late 1850s.

They had some awesome educational games for the kids to learn the history of education and this facility. Incredibly the cost was only $5.00 for me with free parking. They even gave me a free ticket to invite a friend when I bought one of their products.

More than just a tour about the Massie school. Received a docent tour about pre-Savannah days of Tomochichi that continued into the establishment of Savannah with Oglethorpe. Also talked about the architecture of Savannah during its 300 years. Enjoyed my visit.

Massie Heritage Center is an excellent place to learn about the history of Savannah. It is also very enlightening to find out information behind the current architecture and layout of the downtown area. I really enjoyed the 3-D model of the historic district.
There is enough here to keep both adults and kids interested for a couple of hours. The full sized classroom allows you to try on period costumes and take pictures. You can also learn about the history of the building and its various purposes. I enjoyed my time here and it is highly recommended.

Nice museum, the staff are all friendly and helpful. Great for kids as the exhibits offer many interactive and engaging opportunities for children to interact with. It is a smaller museum so it will not take you too long to do and still allow you to explore Savannah. Staff also offer more information about the exhibits and answer any questions.

I had such a great experience at the Massie Heritage Center! The staff was incredibly knowledgeable and super friendly. The Heritage Center involves the most authentic historical experience that I have experienced in a Savannah museum. It literally includes ALL of Savannah’s history. It’s awesome that the local Chatham County Schools get to experience this for free each year! I will absolutely bring my friends.

Love this place. The longest functioning public school in the south. You can feel the history within the walls and they have preserved quite a bit of its original form
Great museum for Savannah history and a superb part of the visiting experience.
Highly recommended.

A great bonus to our Holly Jolly Christmas Your with the Great Trolley Tour.
Super informative about Savannah. Even Santa to greet the guests.
The city model was great along with the stories of each square in the city.
The Native American story was also great. Good to see the good relationship between the settlers and natives.

This was a really nice tour of the history of Savannah. It was a great way to spend the afternoon and our tour guide was so nice! I'd recommend this if you want to expose the family to some hands on history.

As the Director of Operations at Son Tours, Inc. we have many school groups that are doing Georgia Area Studies tours in Savannah, and one of the places I always suggest to our teachers is the Massie Heritage Center. The staff there do a great job with the kids, showing the history of our countries educational process and the vast change that has taken place over the years. I suggest this as an addition to any tour, or even a family visit, do not miss it!!!
