Beautiful Hiking Trails -- We heard about Maplehurst Natural Area from a friend and visited for the first time today. We enjoyed the well marked and maintained loops and completed about 4 miles today. We used hiking shoes which worked well with small roots for stability. Spring fed Lake Maplehurst is beautiful and there are nice views of Torch Lake and East Grand Traverse Bay near the parking lot and a peak or two on the hiking loops. We will be back!

I spent 5 summers here as a camper in the early 80’s. I’m so happy to hear it’s a nature preserve. It was always one of my favorite places on earth. I plan to visit soon and see the beautiful scenery.

Lovely place. I did not have time to explore much of the trails. Just driving in felt special. Hope to get back.

The hiking trails were really nice and included some changes in elevation that offered a mild challenge but nothing too intense. These are pretty and well-kept trails. I would not say there were many vistas or views of the water as indicated, but the trails themselves are very nice and well-marked.

The hiking trails are well groomed. The trails itself are beautiful and not too crowded. There are a couple different path options that take you through wooded areas and some areas with a view. There is also a beautiful lake which was the perfect picnic spot for us!

2021 Update: Took the Creekside trail this weekend. BEST trail for a Torch Lake view. The creek crossing is not yet developed so I do not recommend snowshoes or skis for this one. Best to go by Boot.

This place is FANTASTIC for a quick hike or for an all-day adventure to explore all the trails. And it will take a full day to do all the trails they have.
We have been there many times in the spring, summer and fall. And we went out on a sunny winter's day this year to snowshoe in the fresh snow.
Be sure to explore the trails that drop down towards Torch Lake and seek out the abandoned ski-lift towers standing like silent giants hiding in the woods.
Last trip there was a family with kids fishing in the lake (we have not tried the fishing yet). Our next trip we plan to take the bikes to ride the trails.

Fun easy scenic mountain bikeable trail. Rode there and back from near Kewadin to make it a nice 10 mile ride.

This preserve helps protect water quality for the region. Please do not fertilize your lawn if you live on a lake.
