Charlie's Cafe

This place has always been awesome from the first time i stepped in 20 years ago when I was a carpenter. Built in the early 1900s the site has been home to several interesting establishments over the last 120 plus years. Including the hit hotdog joint and Doumars rival Swanky Franks. Charley Ellison and his mother Gladys found the location absolutely amazing and Charlie's Cafe was born. As of today the service remains amazing and the the classic American comfort food is right on target. With generous portions and accordingly priced menu options... you'll leave full without an empty wallet. If you really want to know where Tom Hanks eats in Norfolk Va , you've found it.

Went for Breakfast, Ordered the Tom Hanks Platter. Two eggs, country fried steak, two biscuits, topped with sausage gravy and a side. All for 10 bucks. Absolutely outstanding! Absolutely Delicious! I will be going back!

We found this place based on reviews. We are not from Virginia and we’re here on vacation. This place is so cute! My daughter had pancakes with strawberry’s and bananas and she GOBBLED them up! My food is pictured. It was country fried steak with biscuits- and it was DELICIOUS! definitely give this place a visit when you go! It’s so cute!

Huge breakfast! Quaint little place. Patio seating in back was decent. Had the heater going so that was nice. Fast, friendly service. Coffee is okay but breakfast was big and delicious. Daily specials. Check out their chalk boards. Love Charlie's mantra: "Make Grits, not war!" We'll be back!

I had the Tom Hanks Special. It was delicious and fulfilling. Just wonderful service and awesome biscuits and gravy with Chicken Steak . The grits are pure Southern Style.
It's a Must stop while near Norfolk Virginia

My first visit to Norfolk, and I was lucky enough to find this gem. I love eating at unique restaurants when traveling.

The servers were wonderful. Shared ideas of where to visit while in Norfolk. And thank you, ladies. My dog definitely enjoyed the treats. The cooks even acknowledged us, said hello, and spoke with us as much as they could even though they were busy. Reminded me of being a kid back in Cleveland. One of the best parts of the visit to Norfolk. I will return.

It's a really nice breakfast/brunch place located just outside of Downtown Norfolk. The food was really good and very well portioned. The atmosphere is really acoustic and laid back, the perfect spot for waking and grabbing some good food to get the day going without having the hassle of a hustling and bustling environment.

We had breakfast here yesterday. I apologize for the half eaten picture, I forgot!

I had the pepper omelet and it was spicy! We had oodles of coffee but they forgot to refill the water so my face almost melted off because of the omelet. I wouldn't call this the healthiest of places but it sure is the cure. My boyfriend couldn't decide so he ordered sides of eggs, biscuits and gravy and a pancake.

All in all, great food and delightful service.

Wow I was blown away the flavors were just spot on this morning. I highly recommend this cozy little spot all by itself.

Truly good food. I had the veggie omelet (add spinach... which was weird to have to add that), but it was fluffy & wonderful. And they have scrapple!!!!
I just have one request: add a shrimp option to those awesome grits!

I had to come leave a review for this place. I’ve ordered breakfast from here quite a few times and they NEVER miss. Literally lol My co-workers and I LOVE it here! The home fries and corn beef hash have to be my favorite!! Tastes like grandma was in the kitchen!!! Even to the little colorful notes they leave on your box….it may be small but I swear it makes the food taste even better😂

The food was excellent, and made exactly as ordered. The service was very good, with the staff very friendly. This family owned restaurant had a very friendly homey feel to it. We enjoyed talking to several of the family members. And we loved the funky building.

This a great little cafe! Their omelettes are amazing and the atmosphere makes you feel you are in a small town cafe/diner. If you are looking for a great place to grab breakfast I definitely recommend it!

This location was a no bells and whistles neighborhood hidden treasure. The blueberry pancakes(super fluffy), eggs and cheese with a side of bacon ....DELISH❣❣ My sister had pecan pacakes with similiar sides and was equally pleased😉😁. We even went back to enjoy the french toast (me) and biscuits and gravy(sis)

The only suggestion that I would have🤔🤔 hire more wait staff. Although the young lady working was GREAT!!!!!(smiling eventhough it was clear that she was overwhelmed at times)she needed some dedicated assistance. That stated I would still return😉🙂
