Very lovely authentic experience, we’ve enjoyed Zagol for several years. My grandson grew up eating here, always his choice for birthday dinner and now hes in the Peace Corps in South Africa. Ignore any negative comments—the sweet little lady is hostess/cook/cashier—if you find anything negative about this place, check your own behavior and expectation.

Bold colors, artistic tapestries, masks, hand-woven pieces and baskets, various pictures depicting people and places unknown, and the sounds and visuals of traditional music and festive, energetic videos in the background all add to the decor and feeling of visiting the chefs own home for a meal prepared just for you. From the kitchen close by the aromas and sounds are both inviting and intoxicating, this heightening the anticipation of your meals arrival. When it does, time-tested and honored ingredients and spices meld together to create magic. Simple, yet complex at the same time. Where else can you scoop up each savory morsel with your original utensil, just like all our ancestors did, then eat the "plate" the meal sits on 🤯
If you haven't had this particular cuisine from Africa, don't hesitate to dig right in, literally. The Meat and Vegetarian Gebeta allows you to sample different dishes if you can't decide on any particular one selection; don't pass on trying the spiced tea as well.

Kicking myself for not checking out this place sooner. It's now listed with my favorite restaurants in Reno. The food is delicious, and just the right portion. I look forward to trying everything on the menu. I'd also like to some day check out the coffee ceremony. The honey wine is amazing: I don't like many sweet wines but this was fantastic (it's not overly sweet). The service was exceptionally friendly and sweet. I look forward to getting to know them better.
PS These collards are better than most I've had in the South, and I thought nobody could do collards better than the South.
PSS My fiancé isn't a huge fan of lamb, but she tried this and said she'll definitely start eating it more if it tastes this good.

This was my first experience with Ethiopian food and it won't be my last. We ended up getting the Gebeta platter with a few different meat options. They were all incredible, with a decent spicy kick that was well rounded. Ended the meal with coffee that was delicious.
Service was awesome. Shita was so accommodating for our baby and made us feel so welcome. She was attentive and her passion shows.
Such a great experience. You won't be disappointed coming here!

First time dining here was excellent!! The woman was so nice and patient with us trying to pronounce the food. The experience of eating with our hands was so much fun and the food was AMAZING!!! Great price too! This is a cute little place, don't hesitate because Ethiopian food isn't food you're accustomed to eating... you only live once! This is a restaurant we will be coming back to!

Even though it's not my style of food or not my favorite. The owners made it a great experience. The in-house beer was very tasty. The in-house sweet tea was excellent. And both of the meals we had were yummy.
Definitely a good first time experience.

So good! 3 dishes plus the Ethiopian house made beer was more than enough for 2 people. Very delicious and will be back for more! Loved the vegetarian dishes, and the beer was on another level. 🤤

We are vegans on a road trip, we were 300 miles from Reno, I knew lunch would be there and I always wanted to try Ethiopian food, I added to my gps. I loved, will eat many times more, it tasted healthy and delicious.

Amazing Black owned eatery! We got take-out and ordered the Veggie Gebeta (Kilkil, Mesir Wat and Tikil Gomen). We also got the Kik Alicha which was my favorite and Bozena Shiro beef dish. They gave us plenty of injera bread. Their spiced tea is also super good!

Zagol has been my favorite restaurant for over a decade. Background: I've had Ethiopian food at hundreds of different restaurants, in 7 total countries, and this is consistently the best food I've ever had. Shita, the owner, has run her entire restaurant single-handedly for years, from making every dish herself to serving them for you.. she's an absolute rockstar. it's a wonderfully relaxing, beautiful environment - the perfect place to take your time and enjoy thoughtful, world-class fair (with several delicious options for vegans and meat eaters alike!) & Good company. ....I cannot say enough about this place, how amazing Shita is, and the food. Just GO!

Had the Gored Gored, Bozena Shiro, and zilzil tibs. Fantastic. Not as spicy as I'd thought it would be but I am Latin so my tolerance is higher. Use discretion if you have a low heat tolerance.
Places smells amazing, has great atmosphere, and very beautiful to look at.
Wonderful staff. Very polite and explained things about the menu.
Will come back.

I was so excited to find an Ethiopian restaurant in Reno, and I love coming here. The owner works in the restaurant every day and you can tell she’s cooking from the heart.
I have always appreciated that Ethiopian cuisine has great options for vegetarians and vegans. Tikil Gomen is my absolute favorite dish. It’s like comfort food when you’ve had a long day. Cabbages, carrots, onions and delicious spices. I could eat the injera that comes with it all day long. Traditionally you use the injera to eat with your hands. It’s a little messy but it’s all part of the experience!
Another hidden gem is the Ethiopian spiced tea. Zagol actually sells this in bottles and whenever I am in I always take as many as they have available. It’s a black tea with spices and a strong ginger taste. I can drink it all day!
If you haven’t tried Zagol I highly recommend it!

Absolutely delightful place! Food was very good, even reminding both of us of some of the best home cooked meals we have ever had. Family style eating with a spongy, delicious traditional bread as your utensil. The people who run this place care about what they sell the customer and take excellent care of you while you are there! We are excited to eat here again soon!

First time trying Ethiopian food. It was delicious! I tried 3 different entrees with chicken and beef. I like spicy food so I opted for the spicier entrees which did have a nice level of spiciness to them. I definitely recommend eating here.

This is authentic Ethiopian food! I have tried Ethiopian food in many places including San Francisco and this is right up there with them. However if you like spicy food you need to tell them extra spicy. I ordered the spicy and although it had excellent flavor I did not taste much spice. Great vegetarian options. I will certainly be back!!!
