A non profit comfort food restaurant with FANTASTIC menu, staff, and a warm environment. This place has suggested donation of $15 per entree and it is up to you to pay what you can/want/feel. The artwork in the alley is a testament to the changed and changing lives of those in this recovery program. Helping others while helping themselves and making a true difference in the community. There's another franchise of this charity in the San Antonio Texas area as well.
The food is phenomenal and whoever is training the staff is doing a great job. Big beautiful portions of breakfast foods, sandwiches, hamburgers, salads, and more! Limited hours so check out that before you go. Lots of fun things to do in their area in Smithville and completely worth supporting this restaurant, program, and those in recovery working there. Yes!

We made a random stop in Smithville to support a local business and stumbled across the Comfort Cafe, aka Serenity Star. This gem is absolutely amazing, from their purpose, to the food, the service and the adorable atmosphere. The Bennys are all amazing! The salted caramel pancakes are sooo good too! And... and.... and! I will definitely be back next time I'm passing through.

My hubby and I found this beautiful cafe! Food was amazing, had the corn beef with potatoes and poached eggs. The coffee was strong and hot just the way I like it. Will definitely be back. BTW, staff were very helpful and courteous!

This is a great place to grab breakfast. They have a really neat story. You pay whatever you want. It’s all by donation. They cook some delicious food too. We frequent this place every time we go through Smithville. Absolutely recommend stopping in. Just bring cash as they are cash only.

Egmahgerd....ya'll. All the people working there are in recovery. The cost of the meal is a donation, the food is scratch made, and amazing. The way to the heart is through the stomach!

Okay, I'm a first timer here, and to be honest, it was the best experience I've had from a small town. So, coming here, apparently, your tab is based on donations! I was shocked 😲
I was so conflicted as to how much to pay, so I figured $10 a plate there where three of us so I ended up paying $45 because I had no clue this was a cash only spot.
You order your drinks, at the register, and food they give you a number for your server to find your table they come back around and leave you "your check" but it's the order slip, and you pay what you want. I felt so welcomed coming here with my family. The food was amazing, and I do love the story behind it all.
Thank you
Comfort Cafe.

We did not realize that the Comfort Cafe is a non profit when we decided to give it a try. The food was amazing and the portions are very generous. Everything is donation based so you pay what you can. Not only did we enjoy our food but we also were happy to support a local nonprofit. We will definitely be making another trip to Smithville to eat at Comfort Cafe!

This place was great! I had the pancake flight and added hash brown casserole. My wife had corned beef hash and added a strawberry crepe. It turned out to be way more than we could eat. All was delicious! The concept of their proceeds going towards recovery was just an extra bonus. We will definitely be back. I don’t care if it’s an hour and a half away :)

We've heard a lot about Comfort Cafe, but never seen to find the time.
I can tell you now that we have really been missing out on this one of a kind Cafe.

Bring cash or a checkbook, because no cards are accepted.

When you walk in, you'll walk to the back and order from the counter. The menu is posted on a chalk board next to the counter. But don't look for prices, there aren't any. Comfort Cafe is donation based, and proceeds go to support their recovery program.
When ordering they write each person's name next to their order, because they are making food for YOU and not just another ticket, and they pray over your food AS they are making it.
And speaking of the food......... gourmet and made with love are the first two things that come to mind.
You find all of the regular things on the menu, omelets, bacon and eggs, pancakes and french toast. But that is where the ordinary ends.

Churro stuffed or Lemon glaze french toast!
A Pancake Flight
Triple Berry Waffles
The Drunk Monkey
Or the Lone Star (which is entirely to big for one person),
are just a few of the absolutely wonderful things on the menu.
I could spend the next three paragraphs in a feeble attempt to describe how great the food is, but it would only illustrate my foolish verbosity.
If Churro stuffed French toast doesn't get you through the door, nothing will.

The staff is super friendly with constant smiles. They are very attentive and are genuinely happy to serve.
LOVE this place!

I love this place. If someone wants breakfast and it's open, this is where we go. The waffles, crepes, and pancakes are some of the best I have had. Portions can be huge. I had a Waffle Flight and got to try their weekly options this time. Staff is also always great. Bring cash as they were cash only.

The staff was extremely kind. I’m really glad this business exists. Food was delicious. Pancakes were super fluffy. We got 2 breakfast plates and a brownie to go. I donated $50.

Food was fantastic. Loved the mural on the way out. Nice outside dining options. Wait was a little long but with how good the food was I wasn't surprised. Nephew got stuffed French toast and it looked amazing. Pancakes were on point and the eggs Benedict I had was done perfectly and the hollandaise was delicious.

So good! This was our first time, but definitely not our last. We had the coffee flight with a mocha latte, toffee latte, vietnamese coffee and a caramel macchiato. They were all good, vietnamese coffee is delicious! For food we ordered the waffle flight which included s'mores, apple, strawberry and blueberry waffles as well as the mixed berry crepes (highly recommend!!). The bacon was thick and perfectly cooked.

I have been here many times, and it's always AMAZING food! The Drunken Monkey is probably the best breakfast, but this time, I had the Little Italian. I was so impressed! My fiancé had the French toast platter, and he LOVED it! The staff are so friendly and kind as well. I've never had a bad experience with them or the food. It's always been positive! Plus, the cafe is absolutely adorable.

Just remember to either bring cash or have PayPal to donate online. They do NOT take credit cards. Also, do NOT put toilet paper in the toilets. They have very old plumbing, and nothing at all can go in the toilet.

Best breakfast in America. We come here for Friday brunch and not once have we been disappointed. I usually get the Vietnamese iced coffee and the Lone Star plate. My husband usually get a chicken salad. Stop by for culture, art, great drinks and food.

Starting your day with Vietnamese coffee and muffins on a Saturday morning with friends at this place is very comforting. They are a non-profit org that give back to the community. Thank you Comfort Cafe
