Proper Fish

I like fish and chips, but I don't think I have ever really loved them. It's fried fish and fries, which sure is good, but never really blew me away. That is, until, I had Proper Fish's fish and chips. I've eaten a lot of fish and chips in the Seattle area and so many revered to be the best that I had assumed Proper Fish's reputation was as overstated as the rest. But it isn't. They really do a fantastic fish and chips that is viscerally delicious. The fish and the batter is perfect, both complementing each other exactly right. The french fries were great and seemed to have no residual oil left on them at all, not greasy in the slightest, and the minted mushy peas were the best I've ever had. And the portions were large enough that I left full. A true 5-star fish and chips experience. If you haven't tried them due to being a bit of a trek from Seattle, I absolutely recommend grabbing the ferry and heading over to Proper Fish for lunch. It's absolutely worth it.

Guys, when I tell you this is by far the greatest fish n chips I’ve ever had, I’m not exaggerating at all.

The price, while may seem like a lot at 19.50 + tax for 1 piece fish, fries, and a small side of mushy peas, was completely justified.

The piece of organic Bering Sea cod was monstrous, enough-so that I left stuffed and had some chips leftover too. Perfectly battered and fried, crispy on the outside, tender and flaky on the inside. Paired with lemon and some malt vinegar, it was delicious and filling. The mushy peas were minty and not necessarily my favorite, but they did not take away from the star of the show, the fish. (If there would be a substitute option such as cole-slaw, that would’ve been the icing on the cake.)

Overall I was extremely satisfied and will be returning here again and again. There is a reason that this spot has won best fish n chips in Kitsap County, FOUR years in a row.

Great fish & chips! Proper fish, real fish flavor comes through, not the batter crust overpowering the fish. Super chips, not limp, nice and crispy. Great fish chowder and delicious fish tacos. Not to be missed !

Out of the 3 places I've tried Fish and Chips in Seattle ant this one had been the best! The breading is crunchy, AND seasoned. The Cod was melt in your mouth buttery. And the chips were not too dry. You can't forget that tartar sauce! Very good!

Fish and chips were good. Fried oysters were huge and my husband said they were tasty. It's a cute, quaint little place. Service was good. Everyone was really nice and friendly. Only con was the bland chowder.

This is PROPER Fish & Chips. 5 stars. Not sure how anyone could give it fewer stars. (Maybe you ordered something other than fish and chips?) There is a reason this place makes every "best in Seattle" list.

The cod chowder is very good, but not exciting. Let it cool down from scorching hot (at least 10 min) and add a little pepper or Tabasco and it becomes a 4.5 as a chowder.

I loved the British fish and chips! The portions were enormous, my friend offered to share and I said no but I guess I should have listed to her. Also, don’t forget to get fried oyster!

The fish and chips are delicious , the lobster roll was decent but I’ve had better , still so so fresh and a good treat to order also got the fried oysters they were good but for me it was too much fried food so didn’t finish them or ended separating the breading. The oysters were fatty and delish . I would deff return and recommend. The place was a little small so when busy feels a little tight.

You get a very nice greeting as you come through the door. This was our first time here and they made sure we were informed of the menu, where to order and pay, staff were very helpful and pleasant. I am a Brit and have been looking for proper fish and chips, well it has taken 23 years but finally I can say I have. The only one thing I could fault was the cold mushy peas.
Since I did this review the establishment has changed hands and unfortunately they are not as eager to please as the last owners.

Great fish and chips!! Not too oily and greasy, the fish is perfectly cooked, not overdone. An enjoyable eating experience! The peas are so tasty too. If I lived closer I would come more regularly!
Not a lot of seating inside or outside so it can get a bit packed, especially in summer. So maybe not the best for a large group.
But it is proper.

Yum; partially eaten already. It was great customer service and the employee cleaned the empty tables often. They had a full staff when we went, so food arrived fast and tasty.

Stopped by for the first time to try their fish & chips. Was delighted walking in to a cool clean atmosphere. Love the inside of the place. No one else was there at 330pm during the week which was a little surprising seeing how people rave about this place on the reviews. But it did not dissapoint. The fish and chips were pretty amazing. Right up there with the best I've ever had and I know good fish & chips. Top 2 probably. Super light and crispy batter and seasoned perfectly. Fries and tartar sauce were on point too. Love the thick cut fries and they weren't super uncooked like so many places today. Also got their clam chowder and I'd say it was pretty good but the consistency and texture was a bit off. A little too small of pieces in the chowder which was like a gritty texture. Personally like chowder with bigger chunks. It's like the clams were chopped up really small. But still tasted good. No bacon in it which was nice. Overpowers it. Definitely will come back to try other menu items and the fish & chips were a staple for sure. They charge 50 cents for tiny little tartar sauces which was a minus considering they only give u one little one with a huge piece of fish and fries. But oh well, just knit picking. Also no fountain drinks, just bottled drinks. Small bottle coke was $3.50 and only tiny cups for putting ice in if you like your soda in a cup with ice. But 5 stars still for me! Will come back!

Absolutely hands down the best fish n chips I’ve ever had. Mushy peas weren’t over done great texture. Highly recommend this is a must try for any foodie.

One of the best beer battered fish and chips in greater Seattle! The batter is light, crispy, and salted. The serving of fish is massive and could be shared. The fries are thick cut and salted well.

I used to order this weekly when the Nosh Food truck was still operating in Bellevue. Glad to find this over on Bainbridge!

Some of the best fish and chips in the Puget Sound. Nice atmosphere and one of the best places to go in the main part of Winslow. Highly recommended.

Always have to stop and try fish and chips in coastal cities. This place has been my favorite! Perfect crunch, beautiful breading, yummy tartar sauce for dipping. Catfish chowder was pretty good! Employees were warm and welcoming. Only thing to note: The fish and chips are definitely shareable 😂 it’s a big piece of fish!

Been looking forward to this place for a few months & it didn't disappoint the fish was amazing and perfectly cooked and almost had seconds . The chips were decent enough to still give it 5 stars. Way worth the ferry ⛴ ride to try.

If fine-dining is beyond your budget when traveling to Bainbridge, this one definitely meets your needs.

The fish and chip served with giant fried fish! I thought it was a baguette, but I was so wrong.

The chowder was also pretty good with a lot of seafood in it.

Taking the ferry to Bainbridge island was an experience in of itself, but finding Proper Fish was icing on the cake. The fish and chips was phenomenal, and I'm confident the filet was the size of my forearm. The crab and prawn cocktail was, in the words of my son, "the best thing I've ever eaten." The chowder was top notch, and I wish I could have made it back for a second visit. Will stop by next time we're on the west coast!
