Ottendorfer Library

Super grateful for this public library. There are two floors, a robust “hold” section, and friendly staff.

They only have book drop off inside the building, so unfortunately you can’t return your book outside of their open hours.

They’re open Mon through Sat!

Quite place to work, several bathrooms in decent condition. Kids program is very nice too. Plus there's often something on the topic of the neighborhood history- tour, talk or a movie. And it's the oldest library in the city!

small but mighty! i stopped in to renew my nypl card and a nice guy at the front desk dropped what he was doing and took care of it in a minute. the spiderman card is cool. i ended up checking out about 6 really cool books. the space is small but has a great selection and there are clean bathrooms (i think 2), places to sit, and then on the way out i met someone else who works there who was also very cool. a pleasure to go there. will go back for sure.

Great place, I visited it today and I was there for like 4 hours using a table and a share and the internet. Quite silent, good environment, very helpful people at the entrance and down at the basement where I stayed. Also has a bathroom which is very convenient I just love this place and I am going again to downtown Manhattan I will be there again soon thanks NYC

Most trustworthy place in town

Our favorite library by far. MIss Thea, the children's librarian, is so knowledgeable and friendly. Being an East Village mom of a small child herself, she always has a wealth of information, and knows every author of every book you ask for! She is amazing. Miss Abby too! My kids love going upstairs and seeing both of them. Love this library, and all their programs!

If you're on the lower east side, this is a pretty cool thing to see. Historic building was home to NYC's first lending library. Later it became a dispensary. The terra cotta molding around the doors and windows is fantastic. Hard to believe it has survived in such great shape. On 2nd Ave between St. Mark's and 9th St on the edge of Alphabet City. Fun neighborhood - mixture of gentrified and definitely not. Next door . . . Otto's Tacos. Best in NYC
