McHenry Recreation Area

This is a great place to take the kids and spend the day . Bring lifevests for everyone cause once you get knee deep the curent gets strong.

Was my first time going and was an awesome experience. Everyone there was super nice and friendly. It caught be off guard that I had to pay $5 to park there for the day. Also I got there around noon and by the time I was leaving around 1:30 the lot was full and the rangers stopped allowing people into the park and didn't let anyone else in until the current people left. So get there early if you don't want to trapped out haha.

I remember when this place used to be free.
$10 parking. More river less beach. Still a nice little escape that's close to home.

Come early and you'll get great parking. Bathrooms really close, water close as well..lots of trees and shade at tables. $5 for parking, pay at ticket machine next to bathrooms. Kids had a great time.

This is one of my favorite places to go. There are two areas to choose from, one is farther down the road but actually upriver from the other. The views are wonderful; it's teeming with all kinds of wildlife; the water can be very cold, especially this year, but I find it invigorating. Most of the time the place is pretty quiet but there are times in the summer it can be quite crowded. There is a $5 cost to park that can ONLY be paid with a credit or debit card, no cash! They also offer camping that must be reserved ahead of time. Many people float or canoe down from upriver. I spend a lot of time here cleaning up the messes others leave behind. The park hosts are wonderful but they are kept quite busy.

nice place to take the family, fish, picnic, boat camp, take the dogs, walk a trail. it is small but nice. clean. nice bathrooms.

We are camp hosts here for a few months and it is great. Access to the water is easy. The grounds are clean. Some nice walking trails.

It's beautiful ❤ an clean water is clear and safe just watch over your children and everything will be fine.

First time there..... definitely not the last!!!!not too hard-core, me and my 4yro had a blast and definitely got our outdoor fix

Wasn't crowded like I was expecting for being such a hot day. Water felt great, not too cold or warm! Geese scared my daughter squawking at her &chased her into river repeatedly, I thought it was hilarious!

Didn't catch any fish, but had a fun day. There is a $5. day fee, debit only no cash.

Nice area for a picnic. BBQ pits for charcoal are everywhere as are tables.

If you wait until later in the day everybody leaves and then you can find a parking spot, it's a small lot. Its a nice spot to play in the river. Pretty shallow and safe. Make sure to wear water shoes as we did find a lot of trash in the river, glass, metal etc....

For a small day trip it was nice. No shade available at the water so make sure you have sunblock and or umbrellas and such.
Please clean up after yourself. Found lots of plastic spoons in the sand.

I took my 5 year old son here, for the very first time. He loved it, and he had a great time playing. It's a good place to go nearby to beat the summer heat.
It's only about 15-20 minutes drive from where we live in Modesto. Close enough to go almost every day not just once a week. Well maintained and the camp host was friendly.

Water looks clean you can see the fish. It's a great place to spend your time Was someone or by yourself but just be careful if you're by yourself

Beautiful shaded area. Parking only $5 for the day. Arrived early (no attendant) and paid at the kiosk near the bathrooms using credit card. Definitely return for a BBQ. Huge BBQ pit available. First come, first serve!
