This place is an absolute wonder of the world. Walking down the opening of an extinct volcano and looking up.

Very beautiful how much natural greenery has grown over the years.

There are no words, one must visit themselves to truly experience this beautiful place.

A must see on the island of Terceira! There are some steps involved and it is always dripping water but the massiveness of the cavern and turning to look out the top of the volcano from the inside is incredible.

Amazing experience. Make sure you read the website carefully as it is only open certain days/times depending on the season and you cannot book tickets ahead and there is a line up waiting for it to open. It’s quite a few stairs and it’s very wet so wear good shoes and bring a jacket. There is no elevator but the stairs are proper with railings so someone with mobility issues would be fine with help and taking their time. Easier to pay cash because their machines go down often. There is a parking lot but it filled up pretty quick so show up a little early, if it’s this busy in October I can only imagine how busy it is in the summer. You have the option of buying your ticket for the cave as well which is less than a 10 minute drive away from the Algar do Carvao. They give you a time you have to make it to the cave by which is plenty of time. The lagoon was closed but you can see it from above with no issues so didn’t really feel like a loss at all.

I didn’t expect a cave to have opening times, so the first time I visited I only saw a small building in the middle of nowhere.

On the next visit the cave was open and for the price of ten euros I was able to work on overcoming my acrophobia.

One of the most popular attractions on the island. You can read about its history/formation before and/or after exploring yourself on foot. It's damp/wet/cool, but not muddy on the cement steps/path.

Definitely the best stop during our little exploration. It was 15 euros to get in. Alot of parking but it was completely full when we arrived. Be sure to have a rain jacket as you will get wet. The opening of the cave looking up from the inside was amazing. Highly recommend

Algar do Carvao is one of the best places I have ever visited in my personal journey of the world. It is so amazing to see how the nature was formed many millions years ago. Seeing it in person is really worthy, a Must-See attraction!

It is worth coming to see, a unique cave. A magical place. Fascinating what nature can create. In March, there are not many visitors, there are no crowds.
The entrance to the cave is reminiscent of the Mines of Moria 😁

Get the combo Ticket, both caves are good.

10 dollars or 15 for both caves. If you're planning to visit this cave, be sure to dress appropriately for the damp and cool environment. Although the conditions may be a bit chilly, the stunning views make it well worth the visit

The Algar do Carvão is a volcanic cave located on the island of Terceira in the Azores. It’s one of the most beautiful and unique geological formations in the Azores, and is a popular tourist destination.

This place is a magnificent place of beauty. You start at about the 2/3rd way up, walk down stairs and through a tunnel to the outlet of an amazing landscape of beauty. It is constantly wet so nature is all over the place, including the water/lake down at the bottom. This place is beautiful and a highly recommended to go. Tickets are 10€ for one cave or 15€ for two places (the lava tunnel that's 6KM away). Recommended for families

Incredible volcano . Its one of the rare off volcanoes that you can go inside it and see how magma found its way to come out. It's fascinating. Rain water caused a small lake inside which in winter could get 20 meter deepness. In summer it is not that deep. I really enjoyed visiting this place.

There are only 3 of these sights in the world, Indonesia, Iceland, and here. You cannot access the one in Indonesia, you must rappel down in Iceland, or you can just take the convenient steps down this one! My words cannot come close to the feelings you'll have inside here... imagine a standing volcano that has not collapsed on itself and created the calderas that we are accustomed to witnessing. You can just look straight up thru the still standing vent! The moment you begin walking down that cement walkway to the massive opening, the anticipation of what is to come is just overwhelming! They even have had musical concerts in here due to the incredible accoustics! Also, there's a natural rain filled pool at the very bottom that can reach up to 70 ft deep. Again, water will be dripping on you as you walk, so be prepared for this. A must, must stop on this island when you come!

It's the first time I'm in a volcano!!!) Feelings and impressions are fantastic fantasy🙂 The greatness and power of this miracle; cold that penetrates to the bones of the body; molten iron and green vegetation - the impressions are incredible and will be remembered for a long time!!!💪💪💪👍

Wow. A fantastic place and one of the highlights of my trip to the Azores. Well worth the entrance fee (even more so if you combine it with the nearby lava tube for a discount). One of those place where I was constantly in awe at the size, shapes, texture and colours. From the moment I walked into the area below the open vent, the cavernous empty chamber, all the way down to the small pool at the bottom. Absolutely stunning. Well paved with steps and handrails. Though a LOT of steps. Highly recommended.

Beautiful one of a kind in the world, this is an actual volcano that you can go inside and go all the way to the lake view, looking up the chimney just doesn’t seem real, definitely a huge highlight of Terceira Island

One of the most beautiful spots on the island! It’s a bit cold there and the cold water drops from the top so if you are sensitive to cold it’s better to have a rain coat. Please be aware of short opening hours. There is also a small souvenir shop where you can get some pins, shirts, postcards.

Algar do Carvão is a stunning natural wonder located on the island of Terceira in the Azores. This volcanic vent is very humid, creating a breathtaking underground lake that is unlike anything you've ever seen before.

The tour of Algar do Carvão takes visitors down a spiral staircase that leads to the bottom of the vent, where the otherworldly beauty of the underground lake can be fully appreciated.

One of the most impressive things about Algar do Carvão is the fact that it is one of the only volcanos in the world that preserved his vent. Making it possible to walk inside a volcano.
It is located in the middle of a lush green landscape, surrounded by vegetation and wildlife. This creates a unique contrast between the natural beauty of the island and the stark beauty of the volcanic vent.

Overall, Algar do Carvão is a must-visit attraction on the island of Terceira, and a testament to the island's unique geological history. The tour is well worth it for the chance to see this stunning natural wonder up close and to learn more about the volcanic activity that created it.

The museum and gallery could see some improvements and updates as it is old and not very well designed.
But the nature makes it a 5*

A truly amazing volcanic lava tube/tunnels. The colors in the lava crystals, the huge open cavern to the sky, the multiple levels as you descend into the earth... Hard to take pictures as it is dim - in person, it is simply wonderful. Excellent, highly recommended & I would come again, it was so cool.

100 % recommended!
Go there and see how beautiful nature can be (especially when it's raining into the hole) :)
I recommend to be there at 2 pm, actually there was already a queue and they opened up at 2.15 pm. Afterwards the place got very crowded because of many arriving tourist busses.
