The museum presents very well the once prevailing in Pico whaling industry. It was a very "artesanal" activity as the whalers had little gear and in fact handicrafted tools by comparison to the whaling industry elsewhere. You also listen to real stories in a video projected and old photos. It is housed in old houses in Lajes, one of the oldest places where people settled in the Azores. The surrounding village area is scenic.

A beautiful museum about whale hunting. They include a very sad movie. Unfortunately, there's very limited space for it, so not recommended for big groups at once.

The museum was very informative and had good exhibits about whaling. The movie was filmed in the 1970's about an actual whaling game excursion..

Small museum, one of those places that help to create a connection and be in your memory after coming back home. The staff is very friendly and professional.

Fantastic experience seeing the first hand account of the whale industry on the Island of Pico. From the boats and tools that were used to the outdoor pit where the whale fat was cremated.

My boyfriend and I really enjoyed this museum. It really offered you an overview over the history of whale hunting and the hunters themselves. Very good decision to visit this just before our whale watching tour :)

Very informative and large venue with a variety of detailed pictures and displays, including movies in Portuguese and English about the whaling industry. Actually follows a whaling vessel out while they're capturing a whale. Highly recommend.

Moving.
A must-see.
An essential record of how tough and miserable life was for whales and whalers alike.

Melville may have been inspired by this sort of reality

Free entry on Sundays

Cool little museum dedicated to the history and end of the whaling industry in Lajes and Pico in general. Lots of archival footage of the men involved, as well as collection of tools and implements involved in the trade.

This one of a kind museum is a big surprise and one will be amazed with the amount of relevant artifacts, scrimshaw, harpoons, photographs and useful information that is found in what is apparently just a small house. We have to say that the exposition is well organized and well lighted and you have the real perception why whale hunting was a means of survival in those days for local people. You can even see one of the whaling boats they used.

Don’t miss it!

Very interesting museum, everything carefully displayed. The documentary was the best part, which took around 25min.
Sunday for free, the other days 2€ p/person. Worth while to learn about Pico past and traditions.

Very interesting and impressive museum. You can watch a film about the whale hunting and at the museum you see all the stuff which refers to whale watching. Even though the whole whale hunting is/was kind of mournful I can only recommend to visit the museum!
