Schuttersgalerij (Civic Guards Gallery)

The Schuttersgalerij is currently FREE and contains old paintings and portraits of citizen civic guardsmen who were part of the same civic group represented in Rembrandt's famous painting the Night Watch. These were citizens who paid to be portrayed, so you will also see their wives and other wealthy citizens portrayed. There are also modern portraits of current prominent citizens like footballers and ballerinas as well as regular people, juxtaposing the times and portraiture styles with the golden age works. This place is also where you'll find the huge wooden statue Goliath next to the smaller sculptures of David and Goliath's shield bearer. Very much worth the visit, especially as it is, as of January 2020, for free.

La Galleria della Guardia Civica è una splendida galleria coperta, facente parte del Museo della Storia di Amsterdam, che merita una visita per la possibilità di ammirare gratuitamente diversi dipinti, alcuni veramente enormi, di ricchi cittadini di Amsterdam che appartenevano alla Guardia Civica. Questi ritratti erano commissionati ogni anno per commemorare il servizio prestato ed il lavoro di beneficenza. Ciascuno dei cittadini doveva pagare per la sua presenza sul dipinto e questo escludeva i cittadini meno abbienti.
