I’m sadly disappointed by my one and only experience with Tandartsen Zijlweg. My family and I had recently moved to Haarlem, and this dentist is the closets to our house. So, it made practical sense to go with them. They scheduled our initial intake exams one after another on the same day for convenience. So far, so good.

During my exam, the dentist/technician noticed an old filling she recommended to be replaced, and asked if she could schedule a follow-up appointment. Since I did not have my work phone with me, I could not check my schedule, but she said not to worry, she would plug it into the calendar, and I would be notified in time to make changes if necessary. I agreed….

Fast forward a few weeks, and I received a text message on a Friday morning at 08:30 about my appointment for the following Monday. A quick check of my schedule, and I knew I needed to change the appointment. I immediately called the office to make the change, and was met with the most unsympathetic and robotic human I have ever encountered. First, she wanted to know why needed to reschedule. Strange question; but I replied that I had work commitments. At this point, she advised that I was too late to cancel or reschedule, because the email “clearly states” that I must do this 48 hours in advance. Two things wrong here:
1. Friday morning seems like 48 hours before Monday afternoon.
2. What email?????????

When I asked about the email, she instead it was sent to me, but I replied that I had not received any such email. I explained that I called as soon as I received the text notification, which she continued to reply, “It does not matter, because we sent the email, and that it ‘clearly states’ the requirements to make appointment changes.” She went on to inform me that I would be fined for changing the appointment at this late date.

FINED??? Seriously?? The more I spoke with this person, the more I felt like she was speaking to a child skipping school and making excuses. I lost track of the number of times she said “the email clearly states….” Her attitude and tone were completely unbelievable.

So, as it turns out…the email was sent to me…and it went straight to junk mail. As a new client, this is not surprising to me. What is surprising to me is how this business chose to treat me more like a number than a patient…especially a NEW patient!

In the end, they cancelled my appointment, and they quickly sent me a fine which I paid and immediately changed dentists. It remains very apparent to me, that money is more important than patients here, so I hope my 45 extra euros was worth losing my entire family’s business AND this review.

Final comment; please don’t bother replying to this. Any sincere attempt to reconcile this situation should have been done before you made the decision to fine me for an appointment I never really “needed” nor requested. Technology is great, but it is never perfect, and you should know to expect that occasionally…these things happen. My intent is two-fold:
1. You learn and grow as a business.
2. Any and all potential new clients are sufficiently warned.

My advice…LOOK ELSEWHERE!!!!

I had an appointment with Dr. SHUTTE for fillings in 2 teeth. I have dentist phobia and usually during the time in the hospital my brain is in panic that is why I could not complain yesterday but now I am calm. I am always reminding about my phobia in the beginning of the treatment and asking my doctor to comment what he is doing during the treatment. It makes me feel safer.

Yesterday during the treatment Dr Schutte was talking with his assistant in Dutch, assuming I don't understand dutch. And told me only two short phrases during the treatment.

They mentioned how tired they were and how much they are waiting for the weekend.

When the treatment was almost done. Dr Schutte started polishing my new fillings, and one moment he said to his assistant in dutch about my tandvlees and assistant told him not to mention it to me.
Now I am panicking because I am not feeling comfortable with the doctor who is treating me as inanimate object.

At some point another colleague came inside the room and moved around, three of them were talking but dr Schutte and assistant kept on drilling inside my mouth.

At some point dr Shutte was showing obvious discontent, that i kept on telling him that I still feel filling too high. And he made me feel guilty and called me too sensitive.

I find this behaviour not only unprofessional but also dangerous. I will be living with this fillings for years and I don't want to feel uncomfortable every time I close my mouth.

Everytime after treatment or control dr Shutte in putting fluoride without my permission . Previous time i had only control meeting and he put fluoride so fast and spread it so badly, it was intimidating.
The good effect of fluoride is not proven scientifically. It costs extra more than 30 euro and not covered by insurance
