I went there about 2 months ago and it's very interesting for historic lovers. It has a lot of stuff to see and is very interesting. Lastly, it's only 2-3 RM for locals.Overall this is a must go if you're in Melaka.

I’m not a museum person but I’ve always been interested in prison series, books etc. So that’s why I think I liked this museum in particular. It was very interesting.
You can’t take photos of the most brutal things, meaning methods of torture and execution.
It was very full of people so I recommend coming here on a weekday (we were on a saturday). The price was 6 rm for a foreign adult.

Very interactive & interesting place to visit. So much info about prison in Malaysia provided here. Cheap entrance ticket. Good place to bring kids to educate them not to do crime & can show them the consequences of doing crime. Felt scary a bit at the cell area & hanging room. I totally recommend visiting this place.

Super super interesting place! It was even more interesting as we "joined" in a school lawatan sambil belajar tour and The prison officer was explaining about caining (rotan). I didn't know how severe it was and I could just feel the terrible terror one must have felt when they need to face this. The bleeding may stop but the scars are for life till death.
It was also definatelly creppy to see the actual death chamber and the cell of the prisoners who will have their last moments in life. The hanging place is definatelly not what I imagine and you can just feel the calm but terror in the air when you are there.
Everyone should at least visit this place at least once in their life

Very chill place. Have many board games to play with friends and family. We came at night after 7pm and the only food they serve is side dishes like french fries, lasagna and many more. The food and drinks is kinda good.

It was an unforgettable visit in my lifetime. The goosebumps i had was so real! The deep inside you walk the creepier it was. Many untold stories you can read through the prison cell walls. Begging for second chance and forgiveness were written throughout the walls and some impressive poems, regrets and drawings too. Everyone makes mistake and some do really deserve for a second chance. However by having such places as museum is good enough to educate upcoming generations. Hope everyone will be safe and doesn't commit any crimes and illegal activities. Walking through the final prison cells makes me terrified and i was speechless looking at the cells and hanging room. Do keep in mind that some of the places in this museum are prohibited to take photos or videos. Tickets to this place was RM3 for an adult and RM1 for children. You'll find plenty of exhibition and information throughout your walk.
Highly recommended to visit this place in Malacca. Finding a parking may be a little tricky here.

The Malacca Prison Museum is an eerie yet fascinating destination that offers visitors a glimpse into the dark history of the prison system in Malaysia. The museum's exhibits are kept well-preserved, including drawings by prisoners, which adds to the overall immersive experience.

The museum is an excellent place to spend time with children to teach them about history and learn from the historic documentaries presented. The exhibits are educational, and the museum staff is friendly and knowledgeable, making it an ideal destination for families interested in exploring Malaysian history.

Overall, the Malacca Prison Museum provides an educational and engaging experience that will leave a lasting impression on visitors of all ages.

P.s. When you are done with the visitation, there's a prison cafe right next to it.

This is a real prison previously used to jail and hang criminals. There is a talk and demo by Tuan about caning sentences.

Pretty informative. Small place but has some nice exhibits. Getting there is ok, parking is a bit tricky. It's in the staff quarters area. RM3 adults, RM1 kids.

This was much more than we bargained for!

An excellent history of the prison system going back to the colonial days.

A very sobering part involved video of an actual caning! Outside there was a lecture about this punishment.

The exhibits on the death penalty was also impactful- with an actual gallows as well as historical explanations of various death penalty methods and other punishments (the Greek Iron Bull amongst them)

The cells, the visiting facility for inmates families, artwork by inmates - countless well presented exhibits.

Worth a visit while in Malacca

Very rocommended for those who likes history. It is very informative. You might spend up to 1.5 h for the whole musuem. It's quite big. The parking is quite hard to find, u have to take note of the sign board. No need to pay for parking. RM3 for the entrance fee. Very worth it.

Unforgettable experience visiting a truly unique museum. What added to the one of a kind visit was that the inter-state police forces came together to put on a mini performance to depict fictional story of two convicts and a dance. Well done, Jabatan Penjara Malaysia on the showcase!

Informative. You can read up about the prison and prisoners' history on the first floor, see their kitchen, bathing area, many artworks and crafts made by the prisoners, poetry and comics as well. You can enter each cell and see their drawings and scribblings on the wall on the first and second floor. You can know more about the different types of punishments, uniforms and documents upstairs. There is a room where they hang the prisoners, but we are prohibited to take pictures. I would say it's an eye opening experience. The parking is across the police station. I didn't manage to find it so I parked in a shop lots area and paid 60 cents/hr and walked around 5-10 minutes.

The museum is very eye-opening, and gives you a tiny sense of how awful it is to be a prisoner. For me, the most interesting part was in the showroom where there was a video on how whippings are carried out, and in the second floor where there were multiple explanations on the death penalty as carried out in Malaysia (as well as in other countries).
