A sombre yet poignant reminder of the past. While the different adventure places of interest are the main draw in Kundasang, the memorial is a nice place to take a step back and remember the horrors of war and its heroes. Do visit and donate graciously to maintain the upkeep of the memorial.

War memorial with a lot of history and stories behind it. With engraved 1721 names of war heroes, this is a true history of war memorial. The garden kept of multi flower and statue of war facts. Good to add knowledge.

This is more like a serene botanical garden as those charming flowers were planted to commemorate those lost in the war. It is located in the centre of Kundasang. The entrance fee is only RM5 if not mistaken.

If you have 15 minutes to spare, please visit this memorial garden. It’s a beautiful garden dedicated to the Australian and British soldiers who became POW during the Japanese occupation. Entry is RM 5 for Malaysian (they accept cash only).

A Great Place to visit this place. What happened during WW2, back in 1940. Names of All the Great Defenders of North Borneo are displayed on the walls. Place well maintained. Do pay visit whilst in Kandasang.

I was skeptical at first. A lil reluctant to put this place on my itinerary at first, but worth the time spent. I was lost earlier, because i thought the entrance was at the left turn, but actually it was on my right turn. Meaning that, i can park my car at the market parking lot.
There is an entrance fee to enter this memorial. And of course you need to do a little walk to go up the hills, but no worries. Alongside all the way up, they planted flowers and other green plants.
Honestly, i do have some kind of sad feelings when I start entering the courtyard. There are few gardens in this area. No worries, there's no cemetery in the area. You also can see Mount Kinabalu from above. I do agree that this place is beautiful for photo taking. You will see lots of spots to be your props. Aside from that, they did place a few plates telling us the history of this memorial. How many soldiers were lost during WW2. Don't need me to go on and on. Here are some a photos i took during my visit.

Beautiful place to explore. Part of the beauty is to know and get to know the past so I highly recommend paying RM2.00 to watch the documentary (20-25 mins) at the gallery. However, you need a minimum of 10 pax, if not, like me, I paid RM20 to watch it but I had the whole gallery to myself. The documentary is in English. Watching the documentary helps capture the actual event more than walking around the memorial. You can find someone to unlock the gallery at the gift shop. The gift shop also has a few trinkets and souvenirs you can buy and snacks like instant noodles and potato chips with a seating area for you to eat at. Public parking is available downstairs but you'll need to climb up some stairs to get to the "lobby". The war memorial area has some "wheelchair accessible ramps" but I find them very steep so you'll need someone with muscles to push uphill and downhill carefully. However, I don't see how you can get to the lobby from the public parking area if you're in a wheelchair. There is also an entrance fee and public toilet at the front entrance.

A place worth to pay a visit to understand the history about the history of British and Australian prisoners of war in Sabah. There are gardens with beautiful flowers and views especially the great mountain of Mount Kinabalu is ideal for photo shooting.

Garden style war memorial dedicated to 1800 Australian, and 600 British servicemen who had died in the Sandakan POW camp, and during the death marches between 1943 and 1945. Also to honour the locals who risked their lives to help the POWs. The place is a series of gardens, namely the Australian Garden, English Rose Garden, and Borneo Garden. The Contemplation Garden has marble plaques inscribed with the names of all who perished, and pond that cuts through a bunch of columns. Behind the Contemplation Garden is a lookout point with a good view of the surrounding area. Lots of greenery and flowers here. Also a souvenir shop and a small resting area with a collection of old photos. Malaysians pay a maintenance fee of RM4.

The Kundasang War Memorial earns a heartfelt five stars for its impeccably maintained grounds and the profound experience it offers, especially to visitors from Australia.

It’s both incredible and humbling to visit such a site, which stands as a beautiful testament to history, meticulously cared for and presented.

I found myself somewhat embarrassed, yet profoundly moved, to realise that many friends and colleagues back home remain unaware of Australia's involvement in Borneo or the significant events that unfolded there.

This memorial serves not just as a place of remembrance but as an educational beacon, shedding light on chapters of history that remain lesser-known.

I am immensely grateful that places like Kundasang War Memorial exist, offering a space for education and reflection. It stands ready to tell a story that desperately needs to be told, ensuring that the sacrifices and stories of the past are not forgotten but honoured and learned from.

It’s a must-visit for anyone seeking to understand the depth and breadth of shared history, embodying a commitment to remembering and educating future generations about the past.

The memorial is surrounded by serene gardens and the majestic Mount Kinabalu. The memorial's well-preserved exhibits and informative plaques offer a glimpse into the region's wartime history. Visitors will appreciate the peaceful atmosphere and the respectful way in which the site honors those who sacrificed their lives. It's a must-visit for both history enthusiasts and those seeking a reflective experience in a beautiful setting. Three different areas of the memorial separates the native flora found in Australia, England and Sabah.

Historical Monument Park. dedicated to the British and Australian soldiers who died in the Sandakan POW camp during their death marches to Ranau. Besides that, it also recognise the suffering and sacrifice of the native population of Sabah.
