Had emergency gallbladder surgery here while on vacation. While it was a shock that this was happening while on vacation, I got excellent care from their staff. I have zero idea how much it cost because my insurance worked directly with the hospital when the emergency arose. I felt very good about the care I got, the surgeon and the facility.

Our resort sent me here after I had a bad virus with ear pain and was nervous to fly home. I was meant to fly home that day so there was a sense of urgency. I saw an ENT in less than an hour and he performed a procedure to make it more comfortable for me to fly home, and prescribed medications. The hospital was very clean and everyone spoke fluent English. Yes it's expensive, they asked for a 1200 USD deposit to see a specialist and it ended up being around 900 USD altogether. I will get it reimbursed through my travel insurance now that I'm home, but even if I didn't have travel insurance I feel the peace of mind and sense of comfort I had in a stressful situation was worth it. A private hospital catering to tourists is obviously going to be expensive, but the level of care was very good

I was sent here by ambulance on January 28th after the doctor from RIU yucatan suggested I go to the hospital after being in intense pain and throwing up uncontrollably. She couldn’t have sent me to a better facility. From the emergency room doctor doing blood tests and cat scan to find out what was going on to delivering the news that I would need surgery that same day . They were fantastic . Once I was past on to my surgery team the service I received just got better . The doctor was very sweet and comforting at a time where I was very scared being in a different country and needing surgery is terrifying but she made me feel extremely well taken care of . The Anesthesiologist was wonderful too she made sure I knew exactly what to expect every step of the way. Now for the nursing staff I can’t say enough good things about them , I wish we had such caring people back home , I want to give a shout out to ericka and Jorge as they were simply the best nurses I could have asked for . Hospiten is extremely clean and well taken care of.

Of course some people complain about the cost but keep in mind this is a private hospital of course it’s going to be pricey but the service you get warrants the price and this is why it is not advised to go on vacation without medical insurance as you never know what is going to happen .

About 10 years ago I suffered an intestinal blockage and had to be hospitalized here for 3 days. Having suffered from the same issue in the United States twice prior, I can say that the care I received here was every bit as good, in fact I think it was better than in the USA. Here Dr. Rico checked in on me every day. In the USA I never saw the Dr. after the initial exam. In the United States the bills came to more than $20, 000USD each time. Here my total bill was $2,000USD. That included an MRI. All the staff I met were friendly and helpful. Thank you Hospiten.

My husband got terrible food poisoning after eating raw seafood at our resort (Secrets Moxche) and could not tolerate anything by mouth including water, so he was getting quite dehydrated. We came here around 10pm, and all the staff here were very quick, professional, and competent. Got my husband the care he needed including labs, IV fluids and meds without a fuss. Also spoke great English which was a bonus for us. Facility is also clean. We were back at our hotel by 1am with my husband feeling much better. It did cost us a lot of money (~$1400), but they were very transparent about all the process and costs, so as a tourist without insurance, thought this was pretty reasonable. So if you are trying to save money, probably not the best place for you. But if you’re feeling ill and want to get care quickly in a clean and professional environment, I would recommend. Both my husband and I are physicians from the States.

Daughter had emergency appendix surgery last Thursday night
As soon as we arrived we liaised with them and our insurance
After bloods and a ct scan the operation was authorised
All in all a good clean hospital that took very good care of her

I was transported here on the first day of my stay at Barcelo Maya Riviera due to intense abdominal pain and diagnosed with appendicitis. I felt very lucky to have the care of the public relations team, nurses, doctors, and support staff. My surgeon was professional and to the point, and my doctor Dr. Hugo Ivan Flores Pineda made me feel human after being through a crazy journey.

Medical travel insurance is a must, and the hospital worked closely with our them (Canada Life - apparently one of the best) to get things done as quickly as possible. Their team knows tips and tricks to make things happen, if you give them a little bit of grace.

I am writing this as a Mexican resident - aware tourists may have a different view. Have visited Hospiten 3 times with my toddler. They have been amazing and best bedside manner. I was asked to pay an amount up front of 5000 pesos (and was refunded this difference i didn't use). They have private rooms in emergency and a special childrens room with jungle animal decorations to help make the kids feel at home. The nurses and doctors truly made you feel like they actually care about you. They even recommended I go to another hospital to get the specialist we needed to see where they could have just let me wait until theirs arrived the next day.

I went back today to collect some paperwork and they recognised me and asked me how my daughter was.

Yes it was't cheapest hospital in Playa Del Carmen but I will choose it every-time moving forward after my experiences in other hospitals in PDC.

It has been recently renovated and is clean and modern.

I paid upfront then claimed back on insurance - however the amounts I paid were significantly less then non residents so please be aware of this.

I came in very dehydrated due to diarrhea. I was scared and very sick. The hospital staff made me feel very safe and comfortable. It was clean and safe. If you are in need of medical attention, I highly suggest this place. Signed- an American healthcare professional.

Very surprised about the negative reviews. Just want to share experience with our 2 years old daughter.
She was not feeling well and suffered from bronchitis and fever.
We called in the morning and got an appointment at the same day.
Dr. Moro Flores was checking her from up and down and was very lovely to our daughter so she was not even crying during the treatment
We got a list which medication we have to take from the pharmacy and she took her time and explained everthing in detail. We have had a very good experience!
The costs were 46.50 dollars.

My wife & I had to come to the Hospiten while on vacation and we were extremely impressed all around. Yes they’ll hit you with a $1,000-$1,500 USD deposit but when it’s all said & done they only charge for the services provided (which for a private clinic didn’t end up being bad at all) and are so helpful with lining up insurance claims. The staff was absolutely incredible from the front desk to the doctors. As Canadian citizens with a medical scare, it was so reassuring to go to a place with this level of professionalism. Highly recommend, especially to travellers with uncertainty in these situations

Walk-in service available as emergency services, but with an appointment, my Mother gets excellent and thorough service.

I could not be more pleased with this hospital. I arrived last night around midnight with severe abdominal cramping which I assumed was a miscarriage. It turned out that I had ovarian torsion. The team had me in surgery within 2 hours.

The staff was incredibly compassionate, caring and kind. I felt completely safe and well taken care of by Dr Jennifer Landa and team. Thank you 🙏🏻 They were able to successfully perform the surgery without harming the baby. I’m forever grateful 🙏🏻🙏🏻

For those writing negative reviews about the cost. This is a foreign country and you (and I) are foreigners. It is our responsibility to ensure proper medical coverage should be in place. Ours unfortunately expired 4 days before this incident and we forgot to renew leaving us with a $30,000USD bill. But that is not the hospital’s fault. That is my own and it doesn’t negate the remarkable knowledge and expertise that these professionals have. Even with the bill, I’m soo happy that I ended up here. Next time I’ll make sure I’m properly covered.

Thank you Hospiten Riviera Maya 🥰

Developed very high blood pressure and was advise to go an emergency room. This hospital was wonderful. I did have travel health insurance but had to cover the cost. They could not find anything wrong and gave me some medicine to lower blood pressure. I never had high blood pressure before and was assured I would be ok.

This hospital probably saved my father's life. Once he was hospitalized, we had exceptional access to the doctors, which we could only dream of in our own country, Canada. Of course, be sure you have insurance before you step in, but if you do, I don't think there is a better place in Playa for an emergency. There will be lots of forms to sign, admin people pestering you for the right paperwork etc, but those are minor and necessary hassles considering. We only waited 10 minutes before someone took care of us; where we come from, that's unheard of. The doctors and the 1st floor nurses were all exceptional, the ground floor nurses all seemed blasé but for understandable reasons. Do understand the hospital is not very big and that in very serious cases, they might not have the ressources/expertise to care for the patients. We fortunately did not get there as we airlifted my father back to Canada after a few days, once he was more stable. All in all, we were more than satisfied with Hospiten.

Very good experience. The doctor was professional and was very clear. The emergency room visit was less than 900pesos. The rest required additional medical attention. But since it was not an emergency we opted to go elsewhere because of the high cost. But overall my first experience here was positive and showed promises. Hopefully I will never need to go back there. 😬

Had to take our 14 month old daughter with high fever there on February 2020. We were devastated!!! however, with the help and attention of amazing front desk staff and professional multi language doctors, (also fabulous medication!!) They managed to bring her fever down very quick. I had to call them a couple of times from the hotel afterwards, each time they were helpful and very very professional! Have to also thank our fantastic "Great West Life Insurance" for their over the top customer service.

Thought I would try to provide some perspective and information based on my medical scare that happened while I was on vacation in the Riviera Maya. I have to say, I was so thankful that this hospital exists and the quality of the doctors were excellent. When you are in a different country you never know what to expect and I was pleasantly surprised.

I had a kidney issue from a prior dental problem that I had in the US where the US doctors put me on steroids and lots of ibuprofen. Apparently my kidneys did not react well to that treatment. We arrived at night to hospiten (referred by the hotel doctor). At first I was pretty concerned as the front desk staff were not very friendly and didn't explain much. Then the security guard kept trying to kick our teenage daughter out of the exam room as they have a rule apparently of only 2 people in the room (which we were trying to explain that we were not sending out teenager out to the street all by herself at night). Anyway, once the actual doctor got to us I felt so much better. He spoke very good english and was knowledgeable and caring and helpful- everything you would want from an ER doc. They ran tests immediately and called a urologist to come see me- which he arrived quickly. He assessed the situation and explained the best course of treatment. I loved the urologist- so nice and very knowledgeable. He reviewed all my test results with me and explained his findings and what he thinks was going on in great detail.

Long story short, I stayed one night at this hospital. The nursing staff was a little hit or miss- some were nice and others not so much. I don't speak spanish that well and I did have a hard time communicating with the nursing staff at times. Everyone else I could easily communicate with. My room was big and clean and I felt very safe and comfortable there. They also did an ultrasound while I was there and the ultrasound tech was superb as well.

The urologist came back in the am to review the test results and release me- even gave me his cell phone number and email (docs in the US never do that). Told me to call him anytime I had a question or concern. He truly was once of the nicest doctors I have ever encountered.

If you find yourself in a medical emergency I hope you will find comfort at this hospital as I did. I was very grateful for the care I received.

Yes, they demand payment upfront and they don't work with insurance. For me, I know I can deal with the billing with my US insurance after the fact. Just make sure you have room on your credit card when you travel- for my stay it was $2600 USD. I mean that is way cheaper than a hospital stay in the US, so I didn't find it unreasonable. Just a hassle to now have to deal with submitting all the bills. Plus, I asked if they could provide my records in english so I could submit them easier and the billing check-out person rudely said no. I do wish the front desk staff, the billing people, and when you leave the check-out person were a bit more sympathetic and nicer to deal with, but what really matters is the care you receive from the doctors and clinical staff.

We ended up in Hospiten's Play del Carmen ER while on a trip to a resort in Riviera Maya a couple of weeks ago due to a bacterial infection and the side effects that came from it. Long story short, our care could not have been better . . . in fact, it was the best ER experience we have ever had including those in US Hospitals. The facility was exceptionally clean and modern with modern diagnostic equipment. My wife and I commented that the place and the staff looked like they were cut from the set of a TV Medical drama. Every member of the staff, from reception thru the physicians was friendly, spoke good English and, most importantly, asked good questions and truly listened to us. We did not feel rushed to explain like we have so many times before in US Hospitals. We went to our doctor when we returned to the US just to make sure that what was prescribed was both the best course of action AND that the condition was improving. Our doctor indicated that their diagnosis and prescribed treatment was completely accurate and all blood work looked much improved.

Others have commented that Hospiten is unreasonably expensive. Our bill was far from that. Yes, we did have to pay it on the spot then seek insurance reimbursement (from our travel insurance provider), but they told us how much it would cost up front and in the end, the bill was a third of what it would have cost us in the US.

This experience gave us much greater confidence in traveling to parts of the world where Hospiten operates healthcare facilities. No, we were not paid for or even asked to leave a glowing review like this. The care was just THAT GOOD.
