Shwezigon Pagoda or Shwezigon Paya (ရွှေစည်းခုံစေတီ) located in the centre of Nyaung-U town, near the Lion Gate. A golden buddhist temple has been one of the largest and oldest temple in Bagan of the age over 2,500 years old, that constructed during King Anawrahta reign

The Shwezigon Pagoda or Shwezigon Paya is a Buddhist stupa located in Nyaung-U, Myanmar. A prototype of Burmese stupas, it consists of a circular gold leaf-gilded stupa surrounded by smaller temples and shrines. Construction of the Shwezigon Pagoda began during the reign of King Anawrahta (r. 1044–1077), the founder of the Pagan Empire, in 1059–1060 and was completed in 1102, during the reign of his son King Kyansittha.

The most golden coated pagoda in Bagan with a long corridor leading to the entrance. But u can skip the corridor by entering from the side of the corridor end before the pagoda entrance. Can’t climb up. Buddha statues are spread around the pagoda.

One very old and beautiful temple at Bagan. Shoes are not allowed inside or at the compound of the temple and as such, it's advisable to go in the evening, to avoid the heated floor at noon. Great to capture the beauty of Shwezigon Pagoda with the lighting, cool evening and the locals offering their prayers. A great place for photography too.

A must-see in Bagan. If you are reading this review, you don’t need to. Awesome golden pagoda, which appears twice as brilliant in the sun on a clear day. Saw a lot of tourists taking photos of a ‘thing’ in a small water-filled hole (picture attached), coudn’t figure out what it was, any ideas?

A glamorous pagoda, less crowds, clean interiors to walk around. Don’t get into the haggling markets, just walk straight to the pagoda, and spend sometime understanding the significance of various features of this magnificent structure.

Magnificent golden temple with multiple separate rooms featuring different parts of Buddah stories. Easily accessible via different entrances. Beautiful Banyan tree in separate garden area with four smaller golden Buddahs.

Spiritual cultural attraction in the middle of Yangon. Impressive in size and statur. During our visit we were approached by a loca man who offered a guided tour for $10. We took him up on the offer and it was well worth the money learning about the history and cultural significance of Shwezigon Pagoda.

Shwezigon is often compared to the golden Shwedagon Pagoda that located in Yangon. According to legend, more than 30 tons of gold was used in its construction and thousands of precious stones were mounted on the top of the edifice. There are also believed to be a bone and tooth of Gautama Buddha.

Buddhist temple is the place of worship for Buddhists, the followers of Buddhism. They include the structures called vihara, stupa, wat and pagoda in different regions and languages. Temples in Buddhism represent the pure land or pure environment of a Buddha.

These magnificent historical temples were constructed between the 11th and 13th centuries, in the prosperous Kingdom of Bagan.

You can see the Bagan beautiful sunrise and sunset from this buddha temple.

Donations only . Late afternoon glow reflecting of Pagoda is worth the visit alone . Be aware , there are shop keepers who will try to convince you that their shop entrance is the only one to the pagoda . Ignore them . Take the one furthest to the right .

One of my favourite pagodas in Bagan, it does look similar to other temples you will see in Yangon and other parts of Myanmar but it's still beautiful and I enjoy the relaxed atmosphere in the evenings as the sunset shines of the gold...

Nice pagoda. It is like the Shwedagon of Bagan. Do note that near the north side of the pagoda, someone will ask you to visit the lucky Buddha. Do not go there if you don't want to spent a few thousand kyat for a religious blessing (show)

Famous ancient sacred pagoda in Nyaung-U
Full of history since 13th century if I m not wrong
You have a lot things to look around in the pagoda area
Only annoyance was street hawkers waiting at all entrance gates !
Many gift and souvenirs shops along the roofed corridor to the entrance gates
Parking area is large and clean
Great experience!

As with some many places in Burma, there is a lot to take in, and one visit might not be enough. However, in Bagan there are so many temples that time spent at each might necessarily be short. Shwezigon was beautifully clean when I visited, and in the bright sunlight the whiteness of some of the structures actually hurt my eyes. As elsewhere, there are plenty of nats and other mythical creatures to accompany you on your trip, and an extraordinary number of stupas theoughout. Remember to wear a hat too.

Quite simply one of the most beautiful temples not only in Bagan but in Myanmar. It is absolutely stunning and such a tranquil location. Beautiful stings of flowers for sale and left as offerings. Plenty of places to get unobscured photos of the pagoda

Pagoda is impressive it looks beautiful, like the Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon.
There are also a lot pagodas and temples around.

One downside. When we arrived at the pagoda some locals waited at the main entrance and pushes us to a place direct in front of the pagoda.
They told us we need to pray, so we did all the process but later the claimed a lot of money.
It’s not just 1000 kyat or something, no they want 5000 kyat and then another 5000 kyat for mother another 1000kyat for praying and another 1000kyat for just breathing the air or just walking on the ground.
That is a crazy tourist scam and made me feel bad to go there, even that they see the tourist just as dollar notes.

Don’t get me wrong on this, I’m really like to spend money and also donate money. But this was like a raid, fast and precise just to robb your money. You don’t will have time to think about it, they do it very quickly and fast it was just like to be in a bad movie.

I will put a picture of the place of scam, so you will easily recognise it.

Stunning pagoda very close to Old Bagan. I biked and it was only about a 20 min ride. You have to ride on the road but cars and tuk tuks will beep at you to let you know they are coming and they go around you.

Lots of beautiful buildings and looks very picturesque when the monks come out to look at the pagoda as well.

One of famous pagodas in World heritage listed Bagan and also sample of ancient architecture, built by kings who founded first union of Myanmar. Good access, spacious parking lot, well lit that good for evening sightseeing and clean environment.
