Our Lady of Good Health Velankanni Church

This stunning church, located on the route to Baththalanguduwa Island, can be accessed by boat or 4x4 vehicle. Its beautiful white walls will surely capture your attention.

Beautiful church located in one of the most isolated places possible. Is reachable only through a rugged sand route using trailer bikes or tractors but the most common way is to hire a boat from Kalpitiya. Tranquil surroundings and a pleasant boat trip across the Kalpitiya lagoon to reach there.

The newly constructed Velankanni Church in Uchchamuni, an island in Kalpitiya, is to be declared open on July 22, 2023. Some of the inhabitants in the island are preparing the premises for the opening by engaging in cleaning activities

This place has around 100 families, basically all are fishermen. The catch they made goes to international export market through Kalpitiya harbour.

There is church, but local people struggle with education (only one primary school, serves only 3 subjects out of 8 mandatory subjects) and medical facilities (no clinic or hospital, there are cases of women delivering babies on the boat on the way to the mainland).

This charming church on Uchchimuni Isle is a delightful gem. Surrounded by a nice, clean beach, it creates a serene atmosphere. Visiting the church and enjoying the pristine beach was a truly pleasant experience.
