There was a long line but we took the number first and strolled around so when we came back we could just enter right away. You can buy the food from the vending machine and you will be able to put it inside the steam. Once you wait for 15 minutes, you can take it out and start eating. Pretty cool experience.

This was a really neat experience. The facilities are somewhat bare-bones, but serviceable and quaint nonetheless.

Staff could not have been more helpful. Some assistance was available in English. Everyone was very friendly, they even offered to take some pictures while "I" cooked my meal.

After reading several other reviews before dining myself, I was wondering about the quality of the food. I'm pleased to report that the food was prepped perfectly to be cooked in a steam basket and the meal was wonderful. Meat and vegetables were well balanced. Additionally , I highly recommend ordering the "Yaseuma" (wheat noodles with sweetened roasted soybean flour).

Is it a tourist trap? Absolutely. But, that's the point! I'm pleased to report that I got caught by this fun and delicious combination of unique attraction and meal.

It was a totally different experience!✨
You get to cook food (which you can select from numerous options : Vegetarian ✅) in the onsen steam♨
They guide you throughout the process.
Very friendly service though!
As it is a very famous restaurant, the waiting time is 1hr on an average.
So first grab your ticket, submit it on the counter and then you can roam about and hour and come back!

A really special experience. Yaseuma noodle, with sauce and powder, was a surprise. It was so delicious, I was really glad I tried it. The atmosphere of the steam rising from the earth is just so moving. We spend a bit long taking photos, so the food got a bit cold. But it was still wonderful.

Fun experience to steam your own food. Arrived at 11.15am on a Monday with no wait. For steaming your own food go to reception to get a number, then order your food from the ticket machine, return to reception who will give you a tray and a timer to take to your designated steamer.

You got to come here at 10 am and I still had to wait 20 minutes!! But the it got even more crowded with much longer waiting time and hunting for tables! So better get here as early as possible. It is relatively expensive but fun, they let you place the food platter in the steamer by yourself and also pick it up (under staff's supervision) and they are soooo cute the old and young ladies in the kitchen and ready to help and film 📱 you while you are cooking it! Definitely coming here every time when visiting Beppu. The steam is slightly salty and it will give a good flavor to the pork meat!! Didn't apply any sauces to it because it was just delicious with salt. You can and should bring your own BEER because they don't sell drinks and there are vending machines for juice and tea, coffee. Also before you come here definitely go the the best hot spring in Beppu, the Mushi Yu with steam sauna over a bed of real herbs! There too go as early to beat the crowds!

Best if you bring your own food for steaming, there is a supermarket not far from here. Deciphering how the system works at first might feel overwhelming but once u get it, it makes perfect sense then. Below at the rough flow:
1.) Get a queue number, this place is very busy, so expect at least an hour wait during peak hour.
2.) Purchase the "ticket" for food or services you need, the time indicated is the time require to cook the food you brought/purchase, not the time you intent to stay at the restaurant.
3.) Once it's your turn, pass the food item you brought to the staff, they will sort it and place in the right utensils for steaming.
4.) Bring it to the steam kitchen, staff will guide you with the cooking procedure and time.
5.) Wait for the food to be cooked.
6.) Eat!

Protip: sauces and condiments are provided (soy, ponzu, chili flakes & salt)

This place has really tasty Jigoku Mushi (hot steamed hell dishes) which you even get to steam yourself, but it is a bit of a challenge to order.
Here is a step by step guide:
Drinks: You can bring your own or order at a machine (tea, juices, only alcohol free beer)
Food:
1. Go to the counter at red number 1 and receive an order number on a red chip.
2. Choose your dish from the picture Menu and remember/write down the number.
3. Go to the ticket machine (no. 2) and put in money first! Select 400 ¥ steam fee for ticket A (all the way on top left). Then select your numbers for the menu items. You will receive your change and paper tickets for the food.
4. Wait until your order number (red chip) is called out and shown at counter 3. Then go to the counter, present your food tickets. You will receive a steam cooker number and be send to pick up your steaming set and raw food on the adjacent counter.
Now you are good to go and can head on to the steaming den outside.
5. Head to the steam cooker for your number (staff will help). Now use plastic gloves+safety rubber gloves for steaming. Remove lid, take out net, put the whole food set as it is on the net, lower down net and close lid. Now you can start the time counter you received and head to your seat. Wait until food is cooked (~15 mins), go to pick it up and enjoy your hell steamed lunch!

I can recommend the Miso Sauce (100¥ extra for two sauces at counter) and standard Kyoto Sauce.

Great experience. Choose and buy your dish ticket from the vending machine. The staff sill give you plates stacked in a pile and lead you to the steaming area. They guide you to put the food in and hand you a timer for when its done. Ordered the sea dish combo with a tasty chicken rice addition. Most of the meat and vegetables tasted great even though they were only steamed. Needs to be eaten fast cuz cold boiled veggies are not fun to eat.

Better than expected! Meat is surprisingly tasty and fresh, it’s definitely the same steam meat/vege you do at home. Worth trying when you are there.
There is a lot of optional on the menu, we tried the mix vege and meat , with eggs. You will “cook”yourself, staff will guide you through, fun experience !

All the ingredients are steamed ... So you can eat the original sweetness of the ingredients ... And after eating, you have to clean the desktop as well as cleaning the dishes! (This is very special), you can go to the restaurant next door ... where you can steamed feet (a local culture) or you can soak your feet ... there are also puddings in the restaurant, which are more dense than the average egg pudding. ... highly recommended! ! !

Great foodie experience when in the Beppu area. We had to wait half an hour because of the popularity. I’m just grateful we could still have lunch there at 1500, as most lunch places usually close at 1400. An assistant helped with the equipment for steaming. Even though they did not speak English, there were a few instructions in English. Sleeves, gloves, and timer were provided for anyone who wanted to try it out. They have a very wide menu. Do not expect steamed to be flavorful; the pork and beef won’t. But a lot of condiments are provided to counter the lost fat. It took a maximum of twenty minutes to steam the meat. Other items took lesser time.

Beppu is an interesting place to visit. If you walk along the street, you can find steam coming out from the manhole cover everywhere. This restaurant is famous for steaming food by using the geothermal energy. We can taste the fresh food in its original state without any oil or seasoning. Yummy !

This restaurant serves food cooked from the hot steam from the area. It's a totally different experience dining here. Some tourists even try theirs hands cooking in the steamy hot kitchen with a constant flow of boiling steamy water.

The wait is long but easy with a token system. We took the token and finished our tour of beppu hells.
It is a funny to cook food ourself in the steam and the differents ingredients and food was really good. Sauces were also really good.
Perfect place to eat in Beppu and have the steam cooking experience

Nice place where you can experience of "cooking" by yourself. A bit expensive though. This set on a photo costs ¥2100. It includes some vegetables, 2 eggs and a few pieces of chicken. Pretty much enough for 2 people.

Very nice place with free osen and leg steam facilities. Price is reasonable for food and you can experience steaming seafood and beef with fresh osen water!!! Fun experience!!
