Takasakiyama Natural Zoological Garden

Takasakiyama allows the monkeys to roam freely within the park. You'll see them playing, grooming each other and relaxing. The park rangers hold feedings at scheduled times (we saw it at 1:30pm), which is a lively spectacle. You'll witness monkeys eagerly chasing after snacks like sweet potatoes. The monkeys will grab your belongings including your kids.

Really great experience to see the monkeys up close. Most of the monkeys continued with their normal daily activities, but a few were curious and would come up close to the individuals in the area. There were signs that said to not make Eye contact. While in close proximity, you can see that some of the bigger monkeys could be a little aggressive.

There are two troops of Japanese Macaques that alternate to come down from the mountain to this park. The staff feeds them pellets, cleans up after them all the time, etc. There is some buildings, structures and enrichment for the monkeys, but for the most part, they just do their thing. A Japanese guide tells interesting details non-stop. I asked a guard in English about the dominant monkeys in the troops and he was able to point to one. The monorail (slow) is 110 yen extra and the tickets 520 yen for adults. The big girls/guys monkeys do a fair amount of harassing the junior monkeys, etc. I have seen small kids being chased likewise; the signs say to hold your child's hand, probably for that reason. It's supposed to be good luck if a monkey runs between your legs and everyone stands with their feet apart to make it happen. This was a cute, interesting and memorable experience. There is a big aquarium across the highway as well.

Great little animal encounter. Over 200 monkeys as advertised, but only around 80 are out at any given time. But do note that the animals are truely wild. Some can be pretty nasty and territorial when approached wrong, so exercise caution. My little girl got scared bad when a couple of them shooed her away from their nook when she accidentally stepped in on them grooming.

I would advise anyone with kids or elderly to just spring for the ticket with monorail. The hike up is pretty steep but paved. Doable for those that can partake but i think the small additional fee is reasonable. You get a good view of the ocean from the monorail so that is a great added bonus.

A fun place to visit for families. You can choose to do a 5 min stroll up the hill or just take the easy cable car option if you are like us. Only 10 mins drive from downtown Beppu and connected to the aquarium by a walking bridge.

The Monkeys they so kind and polite I never ever see before. In here you don’t have to worry about they gonna take your bag your food etc.

A great place. So fun, no cages. The walk up is not bad at all. They are fed every half hour so they will come down out of the mountain, eat, play, then nap.

Fun little place to visit. The monkeys are so close to you they are stepping on your feet. When I went there they were feeding the monkeys which was fun to watch. There were also lots of little baby monkeys which was fun. This place is also surprising kid friendly.

Really entertaining for kids, my kids loveddddd it so much!! The monkeys are fun, adorable and cute. The parking is free.

A lovely place to visit. It was fascinating watching the macaques interact with each other. Their behavior can be quite aggressive , though not directed at the humans. It can therefore be a bit overwhelming for small children.

The monkeys were all minding their business & couldn’t care for the people around them and that was peaceful to be close and not afraid of being attacked. The monkeys were healthy and some were as young as two weeks old! So sweet 🥹

Wow! I did not expect to see *so many* monkeys and be able to be so close to them! The history of the park is very interesting, and the immersive experience is one of a kind. Highly recommend if you’re in the area!

It was so peaceful and monkeys are so adorable! Enjoyed the mountain and see the monkey how they live.

It’s a nice short walk (up some stairs or a gradual slope — you decide), there is also a tiny monorail you can ride up. In the fall the leaves are wonderful, no Sakura that I could see. The monkeys are everywhere. The staff is very friendly and helpful!

Well - lots of monkeys :) You can see them from very close and they run freely all around you - just need to be carefull when holding a camera or food :)

Unlike many places in Japan, this monkey attraction felt like it was actually good for the monkeys! The troops of monkeys come and go at will from the mountain, and they are fed at the park if they're there. The staff will advise if there's no monkeys in the park (the park is itself lovely) so we actually went away and came back the next day when they were there. You can also check their website for this information too. The staff were super lovely, and there is parking right next to the park.

You can enjoy every moments and see how Monkeys follow rules, eat, play and so far ....

Very nice experience! The monkeys are very tame.

Don’t be afraid of the monkeys, they are very well behaved. Just keep your distance and don’t provoke them.

Well worth the short funicular ride up to the temple mid-mountain, which provides a beautiful backdrop to the monkeys roaming around.

Visit after Umitamgo, which is just across the street.
