Interesting for history as it is one of the most iconic landmarks of the Sapporo. Built in 1878 designed by American architect William Wheeler and is a blend of Victorian and Romanesque architectural styles. It stands at a height of 41.4 meters with a distinctive red brick exterior. It is a reminder of Sapporo's early days as a frontier town.

Built in 1878 (明治11年), this wooden structure stands as a symbol of Sapporo city. While relatively small, the clock tower's architecture, and the interior museum attracts many visitors.

We loved the introduction of the Japanese volunteer. He's very nice and trying his best to introduce the history of Sapporo and Hokkaido. The historical value of this place is priceless. I felt grateful and fortunate that we visited here and knew so much more about Sapporo.

It’s one of the oldest building in Sapporo during the Hokkaido frontier (1860’s). People say it is anticlimactic but it is a interesting building if you get in and learn the history of Hokkaido. During the frontier, a lot of western scientists and engineers are invited to accelerate the development and you will feel something similar to American western frontier.

Must visit if you at Sapporo. No entrance fee to hang around at clock tower area. It is so beautiful during winter. Located at city center, easy to reach by using train, bus or walking if you stay at city center

A nice old clock tower with a cheap museum to walk through, very informative of the history of Sapporo and of the actual mechanization that keeps the clock ticking 140 years later. A tour guide that spoke English stopped and helped explain exhibits as we walked at our own pace with him. Great experience.

It's the oldest surviving building in Sapporo
A landmark, a piece of amazing American Architecture within the city center of Sapporo with much history. It has the museum downstairs, 200yen entry fee, and a hall upstairs for cultural activities and private functions. Mr. Yama is a 93year old man, wise and so welcoming whom I had the opportunity to meet and he explained in detailed not only about the clock towards history but also of Hokkaido's.

So glad we took the time to visit this place. We learned so much about the history of Hokkaido from a volunteer tour person at the museum. I had no idea the history that they had with Americans who came there to help them learn agriculture. The clock that was brought there by ship from America is a MOST see and hear all about how it was designed and works. It was fascinating!!

The clock tower was originally constructed as a military drill Hall for Sapporo Agriculture College (Presently Hokkaido University). The main reason to visit this place is; it symbolizes the resilience and commitment of the people of Sapporo.

I went to the Sapporo Clock Tower with my toddler, and roamed around reading the history of Sapporo and this building while she slept. All of the exhibits have English as well, and is quite interesting to read! You can access the second floor by use of a priority elevator if you have a stroller or are in a wheelchair - just ask one of the staff to help you out. The volunteers there are also up for a chat if there’s something more you want to know about. A great little side journey for your afternoon!

Check it out. It's only a 200 yen entry fee and we even had a super friendly guide explain the history of the building to us for free. Watching how the clock mechanism works alone is worth the price of the ticket.

It was nice to learn a bit about how Sapporo started as a city. Lots of exhibits are written in Japanese only but there are volunteer guides who will happily explain the history and exhibits to you.
