Relaxing and so cool. Would stay again. The Kansuiro ryokan is located just a 15 minute walk from the main train station, and there is a bus as well. If you walk, approach the last 20-30 yards with caution since the sidewalk ends, but there’s still a little bit of a shoulder on the road. We preferred this location as opposed to others in Gora because we wouldn’t have to haul our bags on a hot, packed, and slow train for 30-60 minutes up the mountain. Very easy to do the Hakone loop or either half loop from here - there’s another train station closer to the hotel, but you do have to hike up some stairs.

Bring cash for the city/onsen tax, and any drinks you’d like in addition to your dinner. There’s a 7/11 with ATM down the road between the ryokan and the main train station.

The highlight of this was definitely the service and hospitality, from the minute we entered. For each meal, we had one server attend to us the entire time, and Ayu was wonderful.

The baths are natural hot spring, not just normal tap water. They are very hot and took some time to adjust to, but we felt so relaxed afterwards. There are baths in 3 locations - gender separated baths downstairs, a bath for private use (no reservation required), and outdoor gender separated baths that turn into private use after 10pm (also no reservation required). Finally, there is a dry sauna type bath that requires reservation and comes with an additional charge.

As for the food, the dinner and breakfast were included and came with a lot of different dishes prepared with a wide variety of techniques. Everything uses seasonal local ingredients. Sake and shochu were generous pours, but not top-tier quality if that matters to you. The food is not quite Michelin star quality, but impressive and delicious nonetheless. After all, you’re mostly here for the relaxation and onsen experience.

The building itself is over 100 years old and well taken care of, and they still preserved the original sinks in one area of the hotel.

An amazing ryokan with a traditional aesthetic and amazing outdoor hot springs. This ryokan was the highlight of my vacation letting me experience an authentic Japanese stay for a night. I love how this place featured a traditional building rather than the concrete ones in the area and I love the quaint onsens, especially the outdoor one overlooking the river. The traditional food also added greatly to the experience, even down to the incredibly soft desert they presented to me upon arrival.

Truly an experience staying in a traditional Japanese Ryoken.

Away from the center of Hokone-Odwara, this lovely Ryoken is a sprawling, yet charming property that has outdoor greenery, an open-air, and indoor public baths (Onsens). You definitely feel like i had traveled back in time to old-traditional Japanese before its tech-era.

Overall, the property was very clean and well maintained by their staff, who were very friendly and respectful. Please note that the ryoken provides slippers for both inside and outside.

Our accommodation was spacious, separated by sliding doors (Shoji) for sleeping and dining (traditional Japanese dining). In additional our room was the few that had it own private garden and outdoor open-air bath.

The Japanese Kaiseki (dining experience) was another great experience where we wore our yukata and enjoyed their traditional and local cuisine.

My family and I visited this peaceful, beautiful historic Kansuiro Ryokan in March 2018 with our daughters. Every moment was special and memorable. We're looking forward to returning in 2025 and 2026.

Can we just say this was amazing hospitality and I would highly recommend this place! This feels like a sacred getaway from modern civilization but the journey was tiring (I have to admit it wasn’t easy because we took a bus here and it was raining pretty hard and the bus driver was rude (ok, if you didn’t understand Japanese you would haven known he was very frustrated with the tourists with over-packed, WIDE luggage and he kept saying “move back for others” but of course if you didn’t speak Japanese you wouldn’t know! 😝 But once you arrive here … this is where the hospitality begins and you are greeted by gracious hosts and kind attendants who help you with luggage and offer slippers and a room to wait for check in. You’ll have a main host who will show you to your room and a tour of the baths & rules. I would suggest you try all the pools because the male/female pools switch & the mineral baths does feel exotic! We loved the pool that overlooks the River! The sound of the water and the hot soak felt luxurious and the stepping stone (non-ADA compliant) path felt like an adventure wearing the given tabi socks and outdoor slippers. There’s a little temple at the top, kind of cool! Breakfast and dinner are included and it’s amazing how many dishes they bring out! There is an English translation for you that doesn’t quite do justice (ie: handmade fish cake, sounds bland right?) but everything tasted very good and with great attention! After the meal the futon bedding was made in the tatami room. Very comfortable and don’t worry if you’re techy and need your electronics there are outlets for laptop or iPhone chargers! It was an experience to remember, the architecture was stunning and felt traditional. I wanted my daughter to experience this with me, because when I was about her age my mother took me to an onsen ryokan (but not as authentic as this!) but the quality time and quietness really does bring out the zen espression “Ichi go Ichi e” meaning one chance one opportunity to meet… time is fleeting and will never be here again. Enjoy with someone you love. This would be my bucket list place.

It is absolutely impossible to overstate how incredible this place is. The outdoor baths are so beautiful hanging above the river, we were there when the maples were turning and it was so beautiful and so striking. The bath in our room was convenient and indulgent. I honestly can't count the amount of baths we took in our one night at Motoyu Kansuiro. The food was out of this world. So much aji sashimi, beautiful raw shrimp, tuna, squid, and snapper. One of my favorites was shirako tofu in a delightfully light broth. For breakfast we had an absolutely perfect chawanmushi, maybe the best I've ever experienced. The person who attended to us was kind, fun, informative, and welcoming. I'm trying to swing spending one more night before we depart! This was honestly one of the greatest hospitality experiences of my life and I am so grateful! Thank you!!

Absolutely fantastic Ryokan with its own range of onsens to choose from. The outdoor one was my favourite as it overlooks the kayagawa river and mountains. The hospitality is amazing and the ryokan with advance notice obliged our request for vegetarian with full spread kaiseki for all meals. It was an amazingly authentic ryokan experience with all modern conveniences. Fantastic location to Hakone hot spots. This one is a real gem.

One of the best Ryokan I've ever stayed at. The room (Tsukikage, 月影) is straight out of a Ghibli movie, oozing with old world charm. The stay comes with a multi-course, in-room dinner and early breakfast. The Ryokan itself is hundreds of years old, and it seems like every turn has another relic from a forgotten age. On top of that, the venue offers 3 baths: shared indoor, private indoor, and outdoor.

This Ryokan isn't a place to sleep, it's an experience in and of itself. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Really really great place. I can't say that enough. My wife and I stayed briefly in September and it was a great experience. The ryokan itself and the location is absolutely beautiful. The staff is friendly and attentive. There are private baths available, and the room we stayed in had its own bath, so it's tattoo friendly. They also accommodated my wife's vegan diet with an absolutely huge meal. I was shocked by the amount of food they brought to us for dinner and breakfast, it was like it never stopped coming.

The futons and bedding were really comfortable, the room was beautiful, and the views were incredible. Definitely one of the most beautiful places I've ever visited.

Ayu, the young lady who attended to us was very friendly and helpful. The meals were a lot of food, and the outdoor bath was an interesting experience. Overall ryokan is really worth a try at least once.
Meals are served on time at 8am and 6pm. So late risers need to get up by 7.40am latest as the morning call will come.

A completely fantastic experience from beginning to end! We did a ton of research and Kansuiro had exactly what we were looking for: great location, beautiful grounds, a historical building, and phenomenal food served nightly in our room. We booked the Momiji room so we had our own garden and private tub (which was incredible) but the shared tubs were all wonderful too, especially the outdoor tubs, and you can use them privately in the evenings at no charge. The architecture and history combined with the through and friendly service made this stay a once-in-a-lifetime experience for us. Recommending to all our friends, and recommend it to you too!

A beautiful ryokan with a bus stop from Odawara station located literally right outside. They created a beautiful vegetarian meal for me and I did not feel like I was missing anything from my meat eating partner. The service was amazing and the lady serving us was very friendly and tried her best to communicate with us with limited English, which we really appreciated! The hot springs were gorgeous even though you have to go up a bit of a steep path to get there. The private hot spring in the room was amazing and the room overall was beautiful and traditional. Definitely feels like you're in another time.

The river side room has the most stunning view. Also offers Vegetarian/Vegan meals if asked, which is very rare in Japan. Can only recommend.

The views, the food, the hot springs, and the service were all perfection. It was absolutely quiet and peaceful during our stay. My favorite was the men's outdoor baths; I had unobstructed views of the river, mountain to all sides, and Japanese maple everywhere. My room had a stone furo that was continuously running; upon entering, it would flood the room with hot spring water, warming the stone floor before draining. Our meals were more courses than I could believe, all traditional Japanese food, all served beautifully, and everything was delicious and local to Hakone. The building is large, ancient, and well maintained. The hosts were helpful, and pointed us toward a hike we thoroughly enjoyed. Best of all, they allowed tattoos! (If you're traveling from abroad, you should know that many onsen have no-tattoo policies.)

One of the best experiences in Japan was staying in this Ryokan. It has maintained its charm - old, traditional and wooden style. Food was amazing. We requested for vegetarian food and had so many options for dinner, which pleasantly surprised us. The best part was the open air hot springs. Felt like taking a dip somewhere in the forest! Overall, a great experience. Highly recommended if you're around Hakone

Beautiful ryokan with great onsens. Tattoo friendly. Amazing traditional architecture and building. You get to walk around the building in Yukata robes and be treated like royalty by the staff.
The outdoor onsen was the highlight for sure. Men's and women's are separate during the afternoon and after 10pm you can use them privately.
They have different views, one is more enclosed in glass/wood and the other is open and looks down onto the river, it's beautiful. Try to get the more open one when going for private use, it's the second entrance.
The kaiseki dinner and breakfast were both very good but as a westerner had a lot of flavours and textures that were tough to deal with. Don't feel bad if you can't finish every part, our host didn't make a fuss about us not being able to finish some things. They did serve tempura Fugu which was so cool to be able to try.
My wife would have preferred a vegetarian version of the dinner but you will need to specify when booking! They cannot accommodate vegetarian dinner if you tell them when you check in.
Depending on how busy it is when you go it might be worth it to spend more for the private onsen in the room but as we were there on a weeknight we didn't even see another person the whole time so it was very easy to have private onsen time.

This is a charming traditional hotel (or ryokan). The location is fabulous, the service is out of this world good, the rooms lovely and the Onsens themselves a fantastic experience. It’s been amazing.

Just spent Christmas Day there. My family (wife and two adult sons) and I really enjoyed it. Reason for this one was that some rooms had private onsen which was important to us. We got the Momiji room. Also, preferred an authentic and traditional Japanese environment. This is not cheap but worth it for the experience.
