What a beautiful basilica in Rome and a beautiful church in the city. The basilica stands tall and is located just a small walk away from Cavour station on the Metro B line.

It is definitely worth the walk up the steps to the basilica. It is an elegant building with great history and surely worth a visit while in Rome

It is amazing to find out after you leave this basilica that they broke ground in the 400’s!!

It is beautifully done with wonderful artists and craftsmen of the time.

It is unnoticed compared to some tourist traps in Rome. Some of those tourist traps aren’t even worth our time compared to the beautiful basilicas like this one.

Make sure you visit this place and notice all the wonderful things inside.

It's a handsome, modest basilica, as far as basilicas go, but everyone usually just goes there to see Michaelangelo's Moses. It's definitely worth seeing, but there's a really excellent Death sculpture in there as well. It's easy to spot, on the left side in a niche.

definitely a sight to behold, although one would expect the basilica to be more famous worldwide considering what it has to offer. the light arrangement regarding the statue of Moses was particularly intriguing, along with the history and engineering behind it.

This is definitely a hidden gem in Rome that is not to be missed. Once you’ve seen all the major attractions that you want people to know you got to. Son, Pietro in houses one of the greatest Michelangelo sculptures ever, his famous Moses

This is a very beautiful church! The architecture is amazing, and it was a very moving experience to see the chains. There is a beautiful stairway to either go up to the Basilica or come down. I enjoyed my visit here, and I have wonderful memories! I highly recommend a visit here!

I can't understand why people don't appreciate this treasure. It's free and never crowded. I went at 9:30 am. The guard was the only other person there. In my humble opinion, this is Michelangelo's greatest work. Don't miss it or St. Peter's chains if you are in Rome !

A must see Basilica where you will find Michaelangelo's Moses, Peter's Chains and many magnificent works of art including The Deposition
by Cristoforo Roncallia. Closes between 12 noon to 1 for lunch.

Tucked away between two buildings off the main road (facing a large concrete plaza) leading to the colosseum you find this lovely hidden church which is actually big enough to be classified as a basilica. The draw card is the Moses sculpture with horns by Michelangelo. Magnificent and perfect as depicted in bible by the Renaissance master. The chains of St Peter which is the namesake Vincoli are in a glass display case. Definitely worth checking this out if you are in Rome and very local just tricky to find!

The basilica is near the ancient ruins/coliseum so I recommend anyone visiting Monti to visit. It is free to enter, with no lines or security to worry about. Besides having Michelangelo's famous Moses sculpture, it has St. Peter's chains and the "potential" bodies of the 7 sons mentioned in Maccabees. Bring Euro coins to donate to certain displays for more information about each relic. It's beautiful but empty, which was a nice break from the crowds.

A very plain building but inside beautiful art work and wall displays. Also, sculpture of Moses by Michaelangelo and chains once used to bind St Peter - beautifully displayed. No entry fee.

1-26 Church of St Peter in Chains to see Michelangelo’s Moses
Although we felt like we climbed a zillion steps to reach it, we were happy to visit the Church of Saint Peter in Chains on the Esquiline Hill, to see Michelangelo’s Moses. The church is stunning, the stonework amazing, and the statue of Moses and its surround are exquisite. So worth the hike. The basilica originally was dedicated to the apostles, but the popularity of the ‘cult of the chains’ that arose after the supposed chains that bound Peter during his captivity in Jerusalem (kept in a casket) were brought to the church.

Mostly visited because of the Mausoleum of Julius II with Michelangelo’s Moses, the church deserves more justice than its famous sculpture. Being a pilgrim church for centuries, it keeps the chains that bounded St Peter before martyrdom (hence the name of the church in Italian: Saint Peter in Chains). The chains are kept inside an old mechanism that closes the reliquary. The apse also deserves a close look as the ceiling above the nave. The times posted at Google Maps might be tricky so try to approach the church in a decent time to assure your entrance. Bring some spare euros to light the sculptures and the reliquary.

Of course there is another, more famous, St Peter's in Rome (though technically not as it is in the Vatican) but this hidden gem has no queues and no admission price but can still boast a Michaelangelo masterpiece (statue of Moses) and something unique: the chains that shackled St Peter when incarcerated in Rome.

Its construction dates back to the fifth century AD, making it one of the oldest churches in the city.

One of the notable features of the Basilica di San Pietro in Vincoli is the use of ancient Roman columns inside the church. During the construction of the basilica, some Roman columns were indeed employed, specifically from the Baths of Diocletian, an enormous complex of public baths built during the Roman Empire. These columns were repurposed and integrated into the church's design, showcasing the blending of ancient and Christian elements.

I’m born and raised in Rome and I got married in this church last summer. The atmosphere is magical, the Moses of Michelangelo is here, and there is an organ from the 1600 that is played by Maestro Francesco who you can tell had the greatest passion for classical music and for the sound that this specific organ. If you come only for the visit please be respectful of the ceremony. It’s an active church, not a just museum.

Gorgeous masterpieces. A nice Easter egg in Rome where it’s free to enter and admire! Not a lot of tourists either which is phenomenal.
Love the art

A unusually quiet space given the fact that it houses a Michelangelo masterpiece, Moses and the chains which bound St. Peter. Its free to visit photographs welcome, and experience not to be missed. Legend has it that the master himself was so struck by the life-like appearance of Moses that he shouted "speak to me". When he heard no reply he flung his mallet at the knee leaving a mark. I honestly couldn't find the mark, but it's a great story all the same.
