Nice bit of history that you can walk out to or catch the shuttle bus. Here is the latest time table that I took on 23/10/23. Shuttle bus I think is around 3,000 per person round trip but check this on arrival. Car park is of course free. Dress warm and rake water/ snacks. You will warm up while walking but keep an eye on the weather, the wind is very cold at the moment.

The crashed DC-3 plane in Iceland is a famous and eerie tourist attraction known as the "Sólheimasandur Plane Wreck." This abandoned aircraft has captured the fascination of travelers and photographers from around the world.

The plane is a United States Navy Douglas Super DC-3, which crash-landed on Sólheimasandur black sand beach in southern Iceland in 1973. Thankfully, all the crew members survived the crash, but the plane was left abandoned on the desolate beach.

Over the years, the plane wreck has become an iconic landmark. Its location amidst the stark, otherworldly landscape of the black sand beach and the distant mountains makes for a hauntingly beautiful and surreal scene. It's a popular spot for photographers and adventurers who want to capture its dramatic setting.

Visiting the Sólheimasandur Plane Wreck requires a hike of several kilometers from the nearest road, as vehicles are not allowed on the beach. The walk to the site can be challenging in Iceland's unpredictable weather, but the reward of seeing this unique piece of history amidst such a breathtaking natural backdrop is well worth it.

The plane wreck serves as a reminder of the power of nature and the resilience of human-made objects in the face of Iceland's harsh climate. It has become a symbol of exploration and a must-see for travelers seeking extraordinary experiences in this stunning country.

Great to experience the plane wreck after wanting to see it for so long! The walk took us about 40 minutes each way and was nice and easy along one long flat path. The shuttle bus also operates regularly from the car park for those who don’t fancy the hike or are in more of a rush. Usually plenty of parking available.

It was about 45min walking distance (one-way), and there were less people around sunset time(great lighting for photos). Hiking shoes are definitely better, but I didn’t know that and wore sneakers, which worked as well. We were in a rush to leave and didn’t get chance to check the photos I took, nor got chance to talk with this super cool and lovely couple. After I returned to hotel, I found that I captured this photo for them, and I really want to share this photo with them but I don’t know how. One of the few ways came to my mind was leave this comment on google map. Just want to say this is a really amazing thing, and I feel super happy that I got chance seeing it!

A must visit in Iceland. A good 2 hour walk return trip. There is also a shuttle that goes there but it costs around £15 per person.
The walk was a good workout and when your see the wreck it is truly eerie and awesome!
This is a once in a lifetime experience for sure!

This was something I'd wanted to visit for some time and during our visit to Iceland I'm glad we did. The car park had plenty of spaces although busy. The sign at the start gives some background of how the plane ended up on the beach (emergency landed in 1973 due to no fuel, American Navy plane) as well as saying not to climb on the plane. Well, after a 45 minute walk along a straight gravel track, we arrived at the wreck. To say people we climbing all over it was an understatement! I managed to get some pictures without tourists flooding the plane but yes, it was very busy, When you see at least 15 tourists clamber into the fuselage for a selfie then you get the idea that they read 'don't climb on the plane'!! There is also a shuttle service to and from the wreck if you don't want to walk there or back but at what is effectively £35 for two we decided to walk back! Overall, glad we saw it and great that my phone has a magic marker to remove the mass of people clambering over the plane!! Highly recommended nonetheless.

Lots of mixed reviews on this hike but I loved it! Parking is pretty easy to find. We visited super early in the morning and there were only a couple other cars in the lot. There's a sign at the beginning of the "trail" with some interesting info about the crash and you basically just walk straight out from there until you reach the plane. There's not much to distinguish between the path and the rest of the ground but you can tell where others have walked and I believe there are some small markers as well. There is absolutely NO coverage from wind or rain so I'd check weather before you come as that can make the hike less enjoyable, but even with a bit of rain we managed fine (as with anywhere you go in Iceland, rain / wind gear comes in handy often). Getting up early paid off and we had a significant amount of time to get photos with no other tourists in them. There are quite a few other things to see nearby (waterfalls, glaciers) so I think including this hike in your trip is totally worth it!

Tons of negative reviews but it’s an iconic spot in Iceland. As with any tourist spot anywhere in the world, if you want to avoid the crowds, go early in the morning. In Iceland, you have the advantage of having the choice to go early in the morning or late at night if it’s during summer.

We went at 9 pm in April, and were the only ones there the whole time. It was snowing during the short 40 minute hike as well, and blue eerie light was making everything glow. It made it really feel like we had crashed the plane into the snowy and unforgiving landscape as night began to set in. It was a much, much better experience than we anticipated.

Recently came to visit this location. Very impressive story and impressive how the plane is still here since 1973. There was a lot of people there which goes to show how popular it is.

Other than what is shown in the pictures, there isnt more.

Parking cost 750isk which was worth it!

Plan 1.5 – 2 hours to walk out take some pictures and walk back. It’s flat but it’s like walking across Mars. The sign says 3 to 4 hours out and back. I cannot imagine it taking that long unless you have strong winds and rain.

I went at night at the end of October. Not another soul out there. Had lots of time to try all sorts of different light painting experiments and just generally had a peaceful time without hoards of people around.

It's quite a long hike out, and if you don't pay attention, you can get a bit mixed up making your way back to the road that leads back to the parking area. But a fun spot for astrophotography experimentation. esp if you time it right with the Aurora! But I guess these days you can also just sit in your room and use generative AI to make a photo of you shaking hands with the aurora while riding this crashed plane like a weird horse through outer space.

The walk to the plane wreck takes 45 minutes. It's worth it. Although you might think it is difficult/impossible to photograph the plane wreck without anoying tourists, the contrary is true.

Great sight to see. Be prepared for a long walk (approximately 50/60 minutes each way), otherwise you can take paid transportation.

After walking 3,5km we are happy to have arrived at this plane. However I find disrespectful the people who climb on the plane to take pictures...

Plane Wreck on the beach in the Iceland from the 1973 due to bad weather led to ice freezing the engines and knocking them out. The trail from parking to plane wreck is about 45 min or you can take a shuttle bus.

As described it is a parking lot and there is a decent amount of space. Just be aware that it is a pretty long walk to the plane wreck but this is as close as you will get by car.
I cannot recommend doing the walk if it's windy and rainy. It was so not worth it when the weather was that bad. We got soaked and sick and we had proper rain clothing and still got soaked through 3 layers of clothing because the open field you walk through allows the wind to really hit you hard.
