Old Lighthouse

Opposite the Mahatma Gandhi statue on Rock Beach, you will find the historic Lighthouse in Pondicherry.

This lighthouse was constructed by the French rulers during the 19th century and is currently undergoing extensive renovation.

Notably, this lighthouse has a rich history of illumination. Initially, it was lit by oil lamps, and later, it was upgraded to electrical lamps.

Access to the interior is restricted to the public during this restoration phase.

However, even from the outside, the evening view of this remarkable structure is worth admiring.

It adds to the charm of the Rock Beach area, making it a must-see destination during your visit to Pondicherry.

Old light house is situated by the side of the Pondicherry Beach (Gandhi beach).
This is the oldest light house of Pondicherry. Now it is under the control of Department of Finance (GST & CENTRAL EXCISE), Pondicherry. It is a tourist attraction.

Opposite to the Mahatma Gandhi statue ,we are not allowed inside , But the view from the outside is also good .

Beautiful structure with few wooden parts. Visiting inside the light house is not allowed. But the view from outside is great

Pondicherry Old Lighthouse, (French: Phare de Pondichéry)  was constructed in Pondicherry in the nineteenth century by the French rulers and had first beamed light on 1 September 1836. The foundation stone for the lighthouse was laid at the end of 1835 and the inauguration ceremony took place in February 1836.

It took a lot of efforts to reach on the top of the 175 M high building, but as soon as you reach on the top, you forget all the fatigue! One can spend from 10 mins to 30 mins on the viewing gallery! Just Breathtaking! 😍 must visit

This is the old light house situated on the rock beach . Renovation work in on progress . No tourists are allowed to go on the top but in future there may be a possibility to allow the tourists . This is will help both the government and tourists .

The oldest light house is newly renovated by the puducherry government. It is situated near rock beach.

Old lighthouse on the promenade. As of December 2022, it is under renovation and hence is not open for public as yet.

Old lighthouse is opposite Gandhi statue on sea front. Made by French in olden days it lies closed now. Entry is barred now. A new lighthouse has come up some distance away.

Good place in Rock beach but u can't go inside this lighthouse.u will have to go to new lighthouse.

Of course go to the top of the stairs otherwise you'll miss something.
